Jon Stewart of Sleeper dropped in on W♥M Radio. Guitarist Jon, along with singer/guitarist Louise Wener, drummer Andy Macclure and bassist Diid Osman formed Sleeper in 1993.…
Legendary Radio DJ Steve Lamacq is back at SXSW to help introduce some of Britain's brightest new bands to America.
The man helped shaped Britpop.…
Yes, you all know how much I love Sleeper. The 90s band reformed in 2017, and I’ve been keeping a very close on an all-things Sleeper.
If you haven’t been keeping up, I’ll help you catch up. After the 2017 initial tour, the band announced they were recording a fourth studio album (recording at Metway Studio and mixed & mastered at Metropolis Studio) in September 2018. Currently, we know that the new album will be called The Modern Age and is produced by Stephen Street and John Davis, both men are masters at their craft.
Today, on Steve Lamacq’s show, he played their new single, “Look At You Now”. If you don’t have VPN or a BBC TV license, you can listen to the song via Spotify (note: US accounts will not work).
Sleeper may or may not be playing that song in the upcoming 6 Music’s All Day Christmas Party, in London on 14 Dec 2018.
Sleeper’s upcoming 2019 tour:
02 Feb 2019 The Forum, Tunbridge Wells
21 Mar 2019 The Garage, Glasgow
22 Mar 2019 Riverside, Newcastle
23 Mar 2019 Liquid Room, Edinburgh
28 Mar 2019 Engine Rooms, Southampton
29 Mar 2019 Roadmender, Northampton
30 Mar 2019 Church, Leeds
04 Apr 2019 The Venue, Derby
05 Apr 2019 The Globe, Cardiff
06 Apr 2019 Trades Club, Hebden Bridge
12 Apr 2019 O2 Academy Bristol, Bristol
13 Apr 2019 O2 Forum Kentish Town, London
28 Jun 2019 Piece Hall, Halifax
April 2014 is the 20th anniversary of Britpop, so all month we're dedicating our show to the wonderful movement.
NOTE: This was originally shot on video, so if you want the visuals …
For all the month of April 2014, we are celebrating Britpop at 20. "Britpop at the BBC" ran for about two weeks so far, and recently (April 10th), they aired put a new original 30 minute compilation special called Britpop at Maida Vale. This program includes Jo Whiley and Steve Lamacq presenting original live performances from Damon Albarn, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Gaz Coombes, and Josh Record (who?!?).
Damon Albarn performed Blur's "For Tomorrow" and "This is a Low", Ellis-Bextor covered of Pulp's "Do You Remember the First Time", Coombes' performed Supergrass' "Caught by the Fuzz", and Josh Record cover Cast's "Walkaway".
If you live in the UK, you can access the program via iPlayer or on the web.
Steve, Louise, and Jo
In other Britpop coverage, check out Sleeper's Louise Wener on BBC Radio 2. Listened to an excerpt. Again, if you live in the states, you're not allowed to listen or watch their programming. Boo to the BBC.
The bbc.com reports that "Common People" by Pulp was the #1 Britpop anthem (as voted by fans), followed by "Bittersweet Symphony" by the Verve and "Don't Look Back in Anger" by Oasis. Personally, I would have also ranked Elastica's "Connection" and even Sleeper's "Inbetweener" or Echobelly's "King Of The Kerb".... but there were no "female-fronted bands" on the Top 10 list. What gives? Even the Bluetones and Ash made it. I don't even like top lists, but maybe if I feel inspired at the end of April, I will put together a Britpop W♥M Mixtape for you.
Speaking of Echobelly, they are now called Calm of Zero. The duo (Sonya Aurora Madan and Glenn Johansson) announced that they're reissuing Echobelly's first two albums (Everyone's Got One and On) with extra tracks and extra discs full of previously unreleased material. Well worth looking into if you never got the albums the first time around... they are both very excellent albums. All pre-orders will guarantee autographs from both Sonya and Glenn.
Anyway, I've been really pleased at all the Britpop coverage in the media. As a fan of the music movement the first time around, I hope this new generation will like what they hear and be inspired by this short-lived music genre.
As Jarvis Cocker would put it, "Do you remember the first time? I can't remember a worse time."

...The Maida Vale vid isn't a show that was "aired" as such - basically Jo Whiley and Steve Lamacq did 5 Britpop special radio shows, each one had someone in doing a live cover version, these were filmed, and have just been added in to the single compilation of cover sessions. In fact they only showed a single thing on TV - this: Britpop at the BBC
Shame really. They could have put a load of Glastonbury stuff up from 94-95, but copyright would all be owned by Channel 4 (who were covering it at that time), not the BBC, so guess they couldn't afford to do that.
South by Southwest (SXSW) Music is next week: March 11-16th. Since March 1st, I've received about 200 emails with the subject header of "SXSW" …
Legendary Radio DJ Steve Lamacq is back at SXSW to help introduce some of Britain's brightest new bands to America.
The man helped shaped Britpop in the early 90s, by championing some of my favorite bands like Elastica, Blur, Sleeper, etc., hints at doing another Britpop Anniversary spotlight (previously we saw "Britpop Now" and other celebrations).
Looking back, Steve Lamacq described the height of Britpop was probably in 1994 with Blur's Parklife, so celebrating Britpop in April 2014 (20 years later) made a whole lot of sense to me.
Looking forward, one of Lamacq's band pick is Glass Animals. The band will be heading back to Oxford in the next few weeks and then down under to Australia for some promotional dates.
Mar 25 O2 Academy Oxford Oxford
Apr 02 DING DONG LOUNGE Melbourne, Australia
Apr 03 Oxford Art Factory Sydney, Australia
Apr 04 The Zoo Brisbane, Australia
Apr 29 Le Nouveau Casino Paris, France
The other musician that Lamacq liked is Cousin Marnie... who sounds like an older and cooler Lorde.
Her single/video for "You've Been Fooling Me Baby" can be found on her Is Sleeping EP, which came out last August 2013.
Check out the Steve Lamacq interview with Brody at the British Music Embassy at SXSW 2014:
As a sad reminder of the Captain and Tennille's divorce last month and in 'celebration' of V-day coming up February 14th, we have a couple of love-themed articles. Today is for Thompson Twins' "In the Name of Love" song: "Is it true? All of those things that they say about you. So tell me, tell me, tell me what am I supposed to do in the name of love".
Fresh after the release of their EP Drowning Butterflies (December 10, 2013 via Priority Records), Manchester's Bipolar Sunshine, the stagename for Adio Marchan, announced a string of headlining tour dates in March/April…
Manchester's Bipolar Sunshine (aka Adio Marchant) has announced his new single ‘Where Did The Love Go’, which is available to download now. Hear the track on soundcloud.com.
‘Where Did The Love Go’ is described as a modernday love song with Bipolar Sunshine's trademark style of combining candid lyrics with an uplifting melody.

Yip Deceiver premieres their new video for "Lover"; the video is described as "slightly NSFW". The song is taken from their album Medallius, which came out September 17, 2013, via New West.
The duo explained the video, "Directed by Brett Vaughn, the clip pairs the all-smiles synth track with a horror movie-inspired visual. As Pierce coos lyrics about being in the throes of love, three crazed doctors chase terrified old people around a poorly lit hospital. There's a lot of slow-motion gore and the eating of what is most likely human organs. We hope you ate lunch already."
Yip Deceiver are currently on tour with Atlanta-based rappers Turquoise Jeep and will embark on a tour supporting Electric Six in March.

Remember Spanish/American singer Enrique Iglesias? He recently announced that his tenth studio album is called Sex + Love, and it's coming out on March 18, 2014, on Republic Records.
Recently, the Grammy Award-winner musician unveiled the cover artwork as well as a sneak peek for the music video "I'm A Freak" (featuring Pitbull) on VEVO.
With Sex + Love coming out, Iglesias will be doing a special one-night only at Madison Square Garden on February 15th called "Enrique Iglesias & Friends" concert.

I got a note that said yesterday BBC's Steve Lamacq threatened to quit 6music if they didn't put The Heartbreaks' song "Absolved" on their playlist, "If that's a single and it doesn't get on the 6 Music playlist, I will resign from this radio station".
The Heartbreaks are Matthew Whitehouse (vocals), Joseph Kondras (Drums), Ryan Wallace (Guitar) and Deaks (Bass), and their forthcoming sophomore album We May Yet Stand A Chance will be out in May, but it will be preceded by their single Hey, Hey Lover, which is due out February 17, 2014.
Look for the Morecambe-based band to headline London's KOKO this March 21st for Club NME.
