Singer/songwriter David Berman, from Silver Jews and Purple Mountains, killed himself by hanging on August 7, according to Medical Examiner Rules via pitchfork.com.
Silver Jews formed in 1989 by Berman, along with Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. It’s often mistaken by casual fans that Silver Jews was a “Pavement side project”, but it was really its own entity. Silver Jews broke up in 2009.

Stephen Malkmus (former Pavement singer) and his band, the Jicks, will be stopping by the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis in support of his latest album Wig Out at Jagbags. …
"I gotta do what I gotta do," exclaimed Stephen Malkmus at last night's Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. Malkmus, and his band, The Jicks, are currently out on tour in support of their latest album Wig Out at Jagbags, out now on Matador Records.
Tyvek
Opening up the show was Tyvek from Detroit, Michigan. The punk/rock band has the spirit and vibe of Pavement's DIY sound, and you can easily see why Stephen Malkmus asked the band to be the opener.
Tyvek did about ten songs, such as "Midwest Basement" and "Air Conditioner". Tyvek's latest album is called On Triple Beams, and their last show with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks will be tonight in Wisconsin.
The Cedar was already full of people when Tyvek was playing, but when they stepped off the stage, you can feel everybody started to get closer to the stage. Surprisingly a very full show for a Tuesday evening, and Malkmus would comment on this several time in his set, "Thanks a million for coming out! Thanks a million!"
When the band came on stage, they immediately noticed the two youngsters in front of the stage (they were probably brothers, between 10 and 14). Guitarist Joanna Bolme immediately said, "I was five when my parents took me to see the Who." Which Malkmus deadpanned replied, "We're not exactly the same caliber..."
The Cedar is one of my favorite venue in Minneapolis (and I've been to most of them), but, as Malkmus mentioned on stage, it wasn't a good fit for their brand of "hard" rock. To me, Malkmus may be more comfortable in a dive bar, like the 7th Street Entry... but, based on the turnout of last night's show, that they've clearly outgrown that venue.
I wasn't expecting Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks to play any Pavement songs, but I was sure hoping he would (I'm not the only one hoping, everybody in the audience were expressing the same thing). Instead, I believe only two Pavement songs were played ("Father to a Sister of Thought" and "Harness Your Hopes", the latter was per request by Lisa in the audience).
Setlist Photo
As you can see from the setlist, the majority of it was dedicated to their latest Matador album Wig Out at Jagbags ("Lariat", "Planetary Motion", "Cinnamon and Lesbians", "J Smoov", "The Janitor Revealed", "Shibboleth", "Houston Hades", "Surreal Teenagers", "Rumble At The Rainbo") as well as their previous album Mirror Traffic (including "Tigers", the 'blowjob song' "Senator", "Spazz", etc). Hearing the new songs, they do sound like the typical unconventional "pop" songs you have come to expect from a Stephen Malkmus song. You know, weird music chord changes, falsetto-to-normal singing vocals, etc.
The highlight of their show is at the encore, where the band was really loose on play style and also more incline to go off the setlist and take in requests. Malkmus asks, "What would you like to hear? 'Karma Chameleon'*? 'Wonderwall'? 'Rock 'n Roll Star'?" (which he then sang a weird/non-Oasis version in off key). I believe he was only joking, I don't think they had any intention of playing those songs. But the rest of the encore was basically improv hour... even when Malkmus left the stage, Jake & Mike started singing a Foreigner song, "Hot Blooded", so they all were having fun.
Wig Out at Jagbags is out now on Matador Records, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks are currently on tour in support of the album. If you want to check out that album live, there's no better time to catch them on the road. If you were hoping for some really random cover songs, do yourself a favor and stay until the very end. You never know what they are going to play.
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks at the Cedar Cultural Center, Minneapolis (02/18/14)
* PS, this was probably inspired by the fact that they were playing the Cedar 'Cultural' Center (the big hit song "Karma Chameleon" was by Culture Club). I just got the impression that Malkmus was not impressed with the Cedar, because he seemingly made fun of the fact that the venue catered to 'World Music'. Malkmus said, and I quote, "The sound? Not so good."
One of my very first real concerts I went to was Pavement at the Cadillac Club in Fresno, California, on 09/16/1994. I sure wish I had the ticket stub or flyer, but I distinctively remember this show because Pavement's drummer Bob …

Forty Bells
Hearts and Plugs
Charleston, SC new indie-rock band Brave Baby tops the bill, in support of their debut, Forty Bells (Hearts & Plugs) with a sound some have described as a happier, Youngblood Hawke-esque Arcade Fire.
Nashville-based folk, soul, blues, pop husband/wife duo Johnnyswim has been getting the most buzz of the lineup, currently all over VH-1 and in support of their latest EP, Heart Beats (Big Picnic Records).
Locals Actual Wolf (aka Eric Pollard) and Sombear (aka Brad Hale, drummer for Now, Now) round out this very full night of music in Minneapolis.

FEBRUARY 19: 7TH STREET ENTRY Incan Abraham w/ Van Stee
Los Angeles' Incan Abraham is currently on tour, building buzz for their forthcoming album Tolerance (scheduled for April 8th on White Iris Records). In the meantime, the band previewed "Concorde" single for you to hear on Soundcloud.
Jess, who saw them last year, wrote, "For those unfamiliar with [Incan Abraham], their sound could be categorized with the likes of Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear and High Highs... music that goes hand in hand with the strive to be an enlightened being. "
Incan Abraham will be stopping by the 7th Street Entry on Wednesday. Local band Van Stee (consisting of Charlie Van Stee and Josh Kaplan from the disbanded The CVS Trio) is set to open the show. FEBRUARY 20: CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER Lucius w/ You Won't
NYC-based quintet Lucius is currently riding the crest of a pretty big wave.
After wowing the Minneapolis crowd with an October show at the 7th St. Entry, the band returns to the bigger Cedar Cultural Center this week, supporting their bouncy debut, Wildewoman (Mom + Pop Music).
Co-founders/lead vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig dress, look, and sing in unison, backed by three multi-instrumentalists.
Expect a healthy dose of infectious, dance-inducing pop songs and a good excuse to shake your hips to warm up on a chilly winter night. Time Magazine dubbed them “a band to watch” and hopefully you took note, as the Minneapolis date is long sold out.
Boston-based duo You Won’t, open the show with their own blend of melodic, theatric folk, supporting their debut, Skeptic Goodbye (Old Flame Records).

FEBRUARY 21: 7TH STREET ENTRY Together Pangea w/ Mozes And The Firstborn
We actually wrote about the tagteam of Together Pangea and Mozes and the Firstborn yesterday, so I won't spend too much time re-introducing them.
What I didn't mention was that the Minneapolis show will feature a third local act, Frankie Teardrop, who likes to "make rock and roll jams." Teardrop doesn't take himself seriously and promote bad reviews like, "comically terrible" or "what a joke". Sounds like it's going to be fun. Teardrop will likely play tracks from his latest Tough Guy album (which came out last October).

FEBRUARY 23: CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER Carrie Rodriguez w/ Frankie Lee
Since no one I know can afford the Paul Simon and Sting concert at Xcel Energy Center, how about checking out Carrie Rodriguez at the Cedar Cultural Center this Sunday instead?
We caught Rodriguez last year at the same venue, and noted that Romantica's Luke Jacobs was there to help her sing and play... as it turns out, the two of them have a new live album called Live at the Cactus.
Expect Rodriguez and Jacobs to play some country-ish folk tunes. Opening up is local alt-country Frankie Lee, not to be confused with the 70s bluesman of the same name.

Growing up in Sacramento, I've always considered Pavement as a "local" band from Stockton, California. The fact is, back in the early 90s, nobody knew who they were. Listening to their first debut album, Slanted and Enchanted …
One of my very first real concerts I went to was Pavement at the Cadillac Club in Fresno, California, on 09/16/1994. I sure wish I had the ticket stub or flyer, but I distinctively remember this show because Pavement's drummer Bob Nastanovich stood outside the venue, shaking our hands as we stepped into the tiny club. Obviously, I don't remember any songs they played since it was 20 years ago (although I'm pretty sure they played "Cut Your Hair", since the band was riding high on this hit around this time), but according to bootleggers online, they noted that this show featured an improved version of Silver Jews' "Federal Dust".
Since the 1994 show, I've followed Pavement, on and off. I loved "Shady Lane", I love their crackling/none-singing voice of singer Stephen Malkmus. Certainly bought at least two of the deluxe reissues from Matador and having fun re-visiting those old classic Pavement songs... but I wasn't that upset when the band broke up in 1999. That's fine, these things happen.
I did eventually caught Stephen Malkmus again, with his band, the Jicks, at First Avenue in Minneapolis on June 12th, 2005. Unfortunately, I did not take notes because I wasn't covering music back then. Plus, I wasn't that into Malkmus (at least compared to Pavement), so a lot of those songs went over my head. Instead, all the setlist and information are taken from howwastheshow, and I can't verify or deny the set. All I know is that he did not do any Pavement songs, despite the protests of the majority of the audience.
Earlier in the day, Malkmus was at the Electric Fetus to do an in-store performance and a meet & greet. I had him sign my Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain deluxe reissue. Malkmus is great, he was friendly and did not mind signing Pavement stuff (unlike some difficult artists). He even let me take a picture of him (see below).
Anyway, I caught Malkmus again at the 80/35 Music Festival, and was surprised to find out that Sleater-Kinney's Janet Weiss was their drummer! Note that Weiss is currently not touring in the Jicks.

Matador Records
So, what's going on with Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks? They are on tour for their first full-length release in three years, Wig Out at Jagbags (which came out January 7, 2014, on Matador Records). The new album feature, as Rolling Stone wrote, a "soul" song, "Malkmus proves that he can come on like a soulman – even when he's wigging out."
Below is the U.S. 2014 tour announcement, kicking off in Colorado at the Gothic Theatre on February 12. Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks will be in Minneapolis on February 18th, shortly, at the Cedar Cultural Center.

We arrived in Iowa on Friday, July 3rd, morning, very excited to attend the second annual 80/35 Music Festival in downtown Des Moines. Already there was a few things I've noticed right away that the festival got right: awesome free parking, loads of portapotties, very organized setup, a lot of securities & volunteers. What I thought was disappointing was that the paid stage ($80 for both days) was somewhat expensive - considering that the two other stages (Mediacom and Meredith) lineup was just as good, if not better, for $0.
July 4th weekends might not be a great weekend to have a music festival. At least here in Minnesota, everyone goes up to their cabins traditionally for a family get together. Most of the people that I've noticed walking around the festival were young people who overshadowed families and hippies (can someone explain to me the hula-hoops or the "balls in a sock" thing?).
Also, the one factor that put a damper on things was the weather. I realized this is beyond anyone's control, but you would reckon they saw the forecast predictions and would've been better prepared with perhaps a giant umbrella for the audience. Still, despite major contributor and sponsor, US Cellar, attempt to distribute rain ponchos, they quickly ran out in a matter of hours.
For the first day, I only covered the main stage, which included all the artists that I wanted to check out. Although I contemplated on heading over to Modern Skirts and Maps and Atlases.
Tilly and the Wall started off the festivities promptly at 4pm. The tap-dancing didn't start until the fourth or fifth song, and we were told that Jamie Pressnall is with child (if you couldn't have figured it out based on her newborn baby on her colorful dress).
Matisyahu started off stiff (sunglasses, jacket, baseball cap) and thenreally started to get into it towards the third song. I suspect this is all part of his act, but that also means that they've kicked out most of the photographers in the press-pit (incidentally, there were a ton of media coverage for the festival). I have never seen an audience going bananas when M took off his jacket - just to give you an idea that the "act" works.
Towards the end, Matisyahu decided to do a stage dive - but the barrier was far, so the security team was right on top of it, moving the monitors and making sure Matisyahu can jump.
When Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks came on stage, I thought to myself that he "cut his hair". I also thought his drummer looks incredibly like the drummer from Sleater-Kinney - and did get confirmation:
Public Enemy's incredible 20 hour soundcheck was filled with "ai'ight" and "cd and dvd for $10". The soundcheck was so long, the press photographers, possibly bored out of their mind started taking pictures of the setup - in which the MC told them to "chill out, ai'ight, save it for the show, ai'ight?" This was followed by another warning and complaints that the DJ's third amp or something wasn't working. But the fans brave it out in the rain, I suppose sound perfection commands a high price, ai'ight?
I was only there to see Flavor Flav, who never made it to the show. For a guy with a clock around his neck, you'd figure he would remember the show started at 9:30pm. Incidentally, 80/35 official twitter notes: "It's unforunate about flavor flav but the show will go on and public enemy will bring it. #8035" at 5:04 PM.
July 4th proved a little more difficult for me, as that day required me to walk back and forth to all three stage. While the stage are not all that far apart, my "slipper shoes" did not offer much support. Here are the bands I did manage to catch:
Iowa's Poison Control Center "got the party started" as their audience sung along, "love, love is the answer, until you get cancer". They are energetic and seems to enjoy playing their duct-taped guitar upsidedown.
Saw Miss Derringer again, the setlist and performance routine was pretty much the same from a few nights ago. Although, I think the set for the two free stages were much shorter than the main stage.
They seem more talkative at the festival, always projecting this infectious happy to be on tour (and their performance won over a few new fans who eagerly bought the new album to have autographed). Singer Elizabeth McGrath mentioned on stage much she liked these festival food. Which I can attest is true as she offered some of her deep-fried food at their touring BFF's Girl in a Coma on the next stage.
GIAC's set was essentially the same as a few nights ago, only a bit shorter. I got a chance to say hi to them and mentioned that my good friend Melinda once got lost on the train with them on the other side of France.
I caught briefly Man Man, who I can only describe as tribal animals with pots & pans. Audrye Sessions seems really intense, Paper Route was impressed by the people on the rooftop watching them, Envy Corps had mad-audience attendance (they should've been on the main stage, not the free stage) who invade the stage, Wild Sweet Orange's hilarious "do you guys remember what we're called? Yes, that's right we're called Wild Sweet Horses!"
G. Love and Special Sauce's show packed and ended their set with the popular "Cold Beverages" song. By this time, I was ready for bed... but I soldiered on for Broken Social Scene - who as Lara have mentioned to me before when she saw them last year that these guys "are old". She's right. What she didn't mention was that it's ridiculous that the band have FIVE guitarists. Really? Five? Amy Millan from our favorite band, Stars, showed up on the second song and stayed throughout their (very) long set.
Ben Harper and Relentless7's fans are insane. I mean that in a good way. They were so passionate (and drunk) and wanted every opportunity to invade the stage. I saw so many fans turned away from trying to get a closer view in the photography press area. I have never seen that much excitement for any artist at the festival!
We left before the fireworks, so we can get home at a decent hour. Overall, I wasn't looking forward to another night of pitching the tent in the dark and/or with the rain coming down on us... Although it was a lot of fun, it was too much work for me (I'm not a big fan of driving and getting lost). I think next year, I will have someone else cover the show and maybe do the Taste of Minnesota thing next year.
