Mazzy Star We've been following Mazzy Star for a while now, particularly since they've reformed and announced a new record (nevermind that it's been 17 years!)..…

In part one, Jess saw Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, Ty Segall. In part two, Jess saw the legendary Iggy Pop. This is the third, and final, article on Desert Daze 2017 at the Joshua Tree in California…

    The third day of the festival you could really feel the ruthless heat coming off of everyone as they drudged along carrying their water bottles and clutching beers like it could be their last. But despite the tiredness there were still some of the best acts to come yet. Weyes Blood and her band were the highlight of the whole festival for me. God if her album Front Row Seat to the Earth didn’t just rip my little heart in half. So in seeing her I felt like a pre-teen seeing her idol she has only written about in her diary. She opened up with a divine acapella with Can’t Go Home, then after the rest of her band joined her onstage. Her drummer Dash Hutton (formerly with HAIM) really brought the sound together in Seven Words. She sang Generation Why standing in a powder blue suit alongside a tapestry of the earth…and as the wind blew the white curtains behind her everything was calm and right world. She also covered George Harrison’s Run of the Mill which I thought was beyond brilliant.

    Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) was just as euphoric and beautiful as expected, but of course since she is shy she pretty much played all her songs in the dark and referred to an iPad with lyrics lit up beside her Xylophone machine. I had this lofty vision of asking her to take a photo with me with our backs to the camera…but unfortunately, I didn’t get an interview. My Bloody Valentine drummer Colm O’Ciosoig on the drums helped in creating this really soft, haunting vibe that went well with the creepy black and white Victorian backdrop visuals. Hope stayed at her setup for Salt of the Sea  and The Peasant. She was a lovely euphoric dream singing lullabies to us from the stage, and with Into the Trees it felt like the stage was lifting up higher and higher and we were sailing with her in the clouds…a religious experience of epic proportion.

    The last set I saw at my now beloved Moon Stage was none other than Jason Pierce, the mastermind behind Spiritualized. With images of brightly-colored oceans in the background of him and his band, he opened up with Shine A Light, the melodic dreaminess pouring all over the venue as people swayed back and forth smiling at each other. From behind the pit I heard a girl yelling over and over “This is EVERYTHING…I can’t believe this right now this is EVERYTHING!” While it was indeed special I was just trying to keep my balance as the crowd kept moving closer and closer to the stage when I finally made my way out of the pit. Next was Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating in Space from the album of the same title and I can imagine how easy it would be to fall in love in such a setting as this, at a time like this, at a place like this, to an artist like this. This was the live music experience people talk about when they talk about the top 8 best nights of their lives. The mood, the energy, the music, the shining faces…this crazy world takes a backseat to all of that. Love is the driver and Spiritualized took us all home that Sunday evening amongst the Joshua Trees under the stars.

    I met eyes with fellow Daze goers on the way out and there was this kind of unspoken connection of “Hey, we did it, we’re alive…maybe now more than ever.” And just like that, it was over just as quickly as it had begun. I left feeling elated and exhausted, and as I made my way back to the day parking lot, I smiled in satisfaction knowing that the soles of my boots were caked with the magical moon dust of the desert.

On the autumn days in the middle of October (thank god because we would all melt in the otherwise typical days of such shenanigans) will bestow the 6th installation of the transcendent music festival Desert Daze in Joshua Tree, California. It is known that J Tree (as us locals call it) has a somewhat spiritual energy about it, and musicians have been flocking there for years to get juiced on the wondrous inspiration that the desert embodies. So it’s fitting that some of the most eclectic artists in the game right now would be part of this special lineup. Music lovers camp onsite under the stars for this 4 day event.

While last year’s lineup was oodles of impressive (Washed Out, Deerhunter and The Black Angels, to name a few) this year will be equally scintillating. Thursday night John Dayer of On Sees and Troy Bootow of Death Hymn Number 9 will DJ, amongst other special guests. Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile and the Sea Lice will be kicking off Friday, playing tunes from their collaborative album that is expected to be released later this year.  Adult Swim will present Things You’ve Never Seen in a Desert!, and Prettiest Eyes (a local LA band), Panda Bear, Ariel Pink, Liars, Boris, La Femme, The Budos Band, Lee Fields & the Expressions will follow, amongst others.

Saturday and Sunday will be filled with Iggy Pop, John Cale, Tortoise, The Gories, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton, Twin Peaks, Avey Tare, Mr. Elevator, JJUUJJUU, Mint Field, Spiritualized, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions, Eagles of Death Metal, Allah-Las, Atlas Sound, John Dwyer DJ set, Khruangbin, Cigarettes After Sex, Weyes Blood, L.A. Witch, Jerry Paper, Death Valley Girls, and Fever the Ghost. Weyes Blood will by far be the of the upmost importance for moi, as her latest album Front Row Seat To The Earth has been in heavy rotation for the past year.

Danny Perez, Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show, Billgazer, The Blindspot Project, and Cloaking will provide all three outdoor stages with projections all weekend long.

Sonic performances will run alongside panel speakers, curated daily film screenings, and the Mystic Bazaar’s daily schedule of metaphysical workshops.

The Institute of Mentalphysics, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Son, founded by Ding Le Mei, a westerner turned Tibetan Monk, is the oldest and largest spiritual retreat center in the western United States. The beautifully maintained grounds of garden paths, fountains, labyrinths and captivating architecture rest atop a rare confluence of three underground aquifers and a measurable magnetic field which causes a palpable energetic effect on those who visit. Audience members have the chance of staying in one of Wright’s on site cottages, or camping under the vast, twinkling desert sky. Limited in capacity to provide the kind of personal experience that just can’t be had at larger festivals, you don’t just go to Desert Daze, you profoundly experience Desert Daze.

There's no need to introduce you to Spiritualized, but in case you have no idea who they are, they are a "space rock"/stargazing band from the early 90s in Rugby, Warwickshire, that formed from the ashes of Spacemen 3. Jason Pierce is the man behind Spiritualized, with his constant band members (currently with keyboardist Thighpaulsandra, ercussionist Tom Edwards, drummer Kevin Bales, bassist Martin Schellard, and guitarist Doggen).

By 1997, the band's become famous with their NME's Album of the Year, Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space. At this time, they were so well-known that the other band members wanted more money for public appearances. These monetary disputes resulted in having the entire band sacked, which kind of resulted in somewhat erratic output, with their last few studio albums, Let It Come Down (2001) and Amazing Grace (2003).

In 2005, it would seem that main man and founder Pierce became seriously ill (can I speculate drug abuse?, see comment) and spent the better part of his time at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, London.

What came out of it was an inspired medical hospital album called Songs in A&E, an album that took nearly two years to write and eventually released yesterday, May 27^th.

I am looking at the CD's booklet, and there are an assortment of needles and tubes, done as artwork. Having said that, it looks like Pierce have had an obsession with medications, as Ladies & Gentlemen was originally conceived as a medicine bottle, that was ten years ago... the same direction with the minimalist art and text also appears on this latest album.

Besides from the hospital theme, the album seems to be revolves around fire ("I Gotta Fire", "Soul on Fire", "Sitting on Fire") and death ("Death Take Your Fiddle", "Borrowed Your Gun"), all held together by transitional pieces of music called "Harmony" (each harmony was done with different instruments, such as piano, accordion, mellotron, violins, etc.)

I liked the Dylanesque song "Yeah Yeah", the heavy breathing on "Death Take Your Fiddle", the soft and sweet "Goodnight Goodnight". I also generally liked all the "fire" songs, "I Gotta Fire" sounds a southern rock number, the orchestra on "Sitting on Fire", while "Soul on Fire" is a soulful pop song - it's also the band's lead single for Songs in A&E, so I thought this would be a great song to represent this album with.

 

Spiritualized - Come Together

So, since back to full health, Spiritualized will be touring throughout Europe and the US to promote Songs in A&E, including massive festival appearances. You can find Songs in A&E on Sanctuary Records, but the last I check their store, it doesn't have any information on the latest album. For hardcore collectors, Songs in A&E is also available as a medical book with bonus DVD, which looks absolutely fantastic. It's currently out of stock on amazon, but the price is pretty steep: $43.
