A GREAT BIG PILE OF LEAVES
|
Pile of Leaves played songs from their latest record, You're Always On My Mind, which singer Pete Weiland mentioned was released in the summer. I believe they ended their set with "We Don't Need Our Heads", from their debut 2010 album Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex?.
The last time we saw SSLYBY (in the Summer), they started songs with Dickey on drums. This time around, Dickey started on guitar, before switching with Jonathan James in the middle of their set right before they played "Fly by Wire". From my view, I thought the songs started sounding better. Dickey seemed more comfortable on the drums and it really shows with their music sounding more passionate.
The other new thing is that they brought along Dickey's sister, Veronica Dickey, on keyboard for this tour. Just random trivia, but "Philly and Roni" started a band called Dragon Inn 3, last year.
As expected, SSLYBY played songs from the new album Fly by Wire, but throwing in some old favorites like "Oregon Girl" with its catchy "try to stop me" chorus. That song, in particular, as explained by Will Knauer, was used on the television show The OC, but "…then they canceled the show!"
The last thing I wanted to mention is that SSLYBY fans are a dedicated bunch. Many of them have seen the band multiple times (in fact, I recognize a few of them from the Summer show), and SSLYBY take much pride in knowing their fans by names and faces. At some point in the show, SSLYBY invited everyone to come hang out with them at a diner so they "can take some photos and post them on Instagram."
If you like SSLYBY, check them out on tour and snap some Instagrams with the band. Fly by Wire is out now on Polyvinyl Records.
