In the meantime, check out Psych-Out Christmas from Cleopatra Records, released last November. The double disc (double vinyl) collection contain a lot of Christmas and holiday songs from your favorite artists: Iggy Pop, The Fuzztones, Sons Of Hippies, Dead Meadow, Psychic Ills, Dark Horses, Quintron & Miss Pussycat etc.

Among the artist is Sleep Sun's version of "What Child Is This?", which you can hear on Soundcloud.

Sleepy Sun at the 7th Street Entry (04/02/09)

I caught Sleepy Sun at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis in 2009, which I noted for their lengthy psychedelic songs: "Surprisingly, they had a pretty short setlist ... but they seem to stretch out each song to about 6+ minutes, especially with the drone-like guitar and experimental effects usually reserved towards the end of each song. I particularly liked how "White Dove" and "New Age" ended on their live set."

Look for Sleepy Sun to return on the road when Maui Tears is released.

In 2008, Sunn O))) announced at their 200th gig at the Øya festival that they will be working with Norwegian legends Ulver. The two bands came into the studio and did three three "live in improvisation" pieces, starting that evening and ending at dawn.

Ulver's singer Kristoffer Rygg talks about the recording process, "We were sitting in the console room, early in the morning, listening to the takes. Someone said, 'ah, sunrise over Crystal Canyon,' as if the night had been a dark one. We all laughed and Greg proposed it as a title. In that setting it sounded perfect. The boys had mentioned wanting the music to orient towards the light, like some lost pilgrim stretching before the sun. We kept that mental picture for the processing."

The Sunn O)))/Ulver collaboration record is called Terrestrials, and it is hitting stores on February 4th, 2014, via Southern Lord. Since Sunn O))) is primarily a touring band, expect them to head out on tour in 2014. Ulver, on the other hand, is doing a few dates in Europe:

Shook is the singer of the Bowie-inspired rock band The Great Nostalgic, but with Sun Marquee, it is said that it's "new-tropical, bedroom-soul" sound. A MILLION BILLION DYING SUNS ambds.com San Francisco's A Million Billion Dying Suns is the project of Nate Mercereau. When he plays live, he's accompanied by Steve Wyreman (guitar), Josh Lippi (bass), Derek Taylor (drums) and Ben Schwier (keys). A Million Billion Dying Suns' debut EP is called Strawberry. For the final week of Rocktober (week five!) starts on Sunday (10/27), and we have Quiet Life, who is opening up for the Head And The Heart at the sold-out double shows at First Avenue, in Minneapolis.

The Portland indie/Americana band is currently touring in support of their sophomore LP, Wild Pack. The digital and CD were released last week (October 15th), but look for the vinyl version to make its away in stores on November 19, 2013 on Mama Bird Recording Co.

On Monday (10/28), we have Sleepy Sun to open up for City and Colour over at First Avenue in Minneapolis. I've previously mentioned that I was introduced to City and Colour by girls swooning over his tour poster - so he's definitely has his fans.

As for Sleepy Sun, I managed to catch the band in 2009, when they were touring in support of Embrace.

The San Francisco band recently released their new 7" on Dine Alone Records called "The Lane" (backed with "11:32"), which you can hear on Soundcloud.

Next door, on the same name Tuesday (10/29), at the mainroom at First Avenue is Smallpools and Walk the moon and Twenty One Pilots.

Smallpools is an up-and-coming indie pop band, forming in early 2013. Based out of Los Angeles, the group consists of four members: Sean Scanlon (vocals), Mike Kamerman (guitar), Beau Kuther (drums), and Joe Intile (bass). Their first single "Dreaming" was released online in May of 2013, and has already been featured in the FIFA 14 soundtrack, as well as the show The Vampire Diaries. The debut self-entitled EP, under RCA Records, was released on July 16, 2013.

Smallpools recently went semi-viral on the internet when the group decided to "commandeer" a self-playing piano in the lobby of a movie theater. There they played an acoustic version of their hit single "Dreaming" which attracted a small crowd, including security. They were granted permission to finish, and, upon doing so, were peacefully escorted out. A bystander commented that they were "inspired" by the performance.

It's official: I'm now accepting live music assignments, now that it's not snowing.

First Communion Afterparty (myspace) looks like a pack of gypsies doing spacerock for their hippy listeners, at least they tried to bring some 'sun' into Minnesota with their two opening acts: Daughters of the Sun (myspace) and Sleepy Sun official/myspace). It should be noted that Daughters of the Sun are also from Minneapolis and actually have no women, which makes it doubly ironic.

Since I was there for San Francisco's Sleepy Sun, I did manage to listen to their album, Embrace to get an idea of what to expect. I think I prefer their slower songs, such as "Duet With The Northern Sky" and "Lord" - mostly for clearly hearing the vocals, but as expected, these don't make for good live performances (since it seems the key here is to make people rock out to their psychedelic space rock).

If they're not singing (and sometime harmonica), Bret, with his tongue out, and Rachael thrashing her head in the picture pretty much sums up what the band is about: just having a great time.

They're heading to Fargo tomorrow (today), which I thought was still a flood disaster zone? They're also heading into Europe and Italy, so be sure to catch them if you're in the UK. Incidentally, the album won't be released in the UK until May 2009, presumably because they're landing in the UK just time time for the ATP Festival in early May. Details of the UK records be seen on ATP's website.

By the way, iTunes spotlighted the band as "Indie Spotlight Best of 2008" among not-so-indie Radiohead and Deerhunter, so they are in great company, and it would be interesting to see where their music takes them in the future.
