Normally, Ottawa’s Hollerado is actually on tour with The Sam Roberts Band, however for this Saturday night (January 28th), they’re headlining the 7th Street Entry, while SRB was asked to perform at The Current’s 12th Birthday Party next door at the mainroom.

Sleep Study

Opening up the show was Sleep Study, starting at 9pm. We caught the local band a few years ago, and like last time, they were a trio, led by singer/guitarist Ryan Plewacki, and they covered Buzzcocks’ ‘Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)’.

Savoy Motel

Nashville’s Savoy Motel was up next. The gargey / psychedelica / 70’s inspired band is normally touring with The Lemon Twigs (however, like The Sam Roberts Band, they were asked to play at the sold-out The Current show).

The four-piece features bassist Jeffrey Novak, drummer Jessica McFarland, guitarists Dillon Watson and Mimi Galbierz, all took part in singing (lead or backup) songs from their self-titled debut album (What’s Your Rupture? Records), such as ‘Sorry People’.

Their set was familiarly similar to their first Minneapolis appearance with The Dandy Warhols in September 2016... but they appeared to be more confident and talkative on their appearance last night. They’re still a very young band, so expect more great things from this band.

Canada’s Hollerado took the stage earlier than advertised, starting their set with some of their favorite songs to play live, including their biggest hit song ‘Americanarama’ (which got the crowds pumping and dancing hard). After ‘Americanarama’, singer Menno Versteeg announced that they will be playing unreleased songs from their forthcoming album ... set for release sometime this Spring 2017 (just in time for SXSW, I reckon).

As promised, the band played a lot of new songs, including a track they called ‘Eloise’ and something called ‘I Got You’ (a song about being “rich and an a******”).

Hearing the new songs live for the first time, I can tell you that it is classic Hollerado’s standard sound... that is about fun and not to be taken too seriously.

Midway in their set, Versteeg reminisce the last the band was in town, it was about four years ago at the same venue. They were coming down from Chicago and were trying to make time, as they were running late. In fact, they were speeding the entire way and was eventually pulled over by the police. As the officer was writing them a ticket, they asked the cop, “How fast can we go, without getting caught?”.

The punchline was that on that 25 November 2013 night, the band made a record time of setting up and ready to play on stage in seven minutes.

Hollerado ended their set with ‘So It Goes’, and tomorrow resumes their tour with fellow Canadian band The Sam Roberts Band.

Australian singer/songwriter Fraser A. Gorman is on his U.S. debut promotional tour for his debut album Slow Gum (House Anxiety / Marathon Artists). His journey took him to the 7th Street Entry last night, and will end in New York's CMJ Music Festival (College Music Journal).

Sleep Study

Local Sleep Study, the UK-influenced "retro power pop" band (currently it looks like a trio), warmed up the show. Joining them on drums was not their regular drummer, as introduced by singer/guitarist Ryan Plewacki.

Highlight of their set was a rather faithful version of Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)" (which, yes, the aging punk band played on their set last year... and is a song that is dear to our cover lover hearts.)

Sleep Study ended their 40-min set with a song that they called "Party in Here."

Fraser A. Gorman

"We came all the way from Melbourne to play this gig and I'm glad we did," said Fraser A. Gorman near the start of his set. He seemed to be enjoying himself on his holiday-slash-work promotional United States tour... despite the fact that the airline lost his guitar from Chicago to Minneapolis. He had to rent (or as they called it down under, "hire") a guitar that "matches my outfit."

Everything about Gorman screams #1 Dylan fan, from his looks ("it's the hair, isn't it?"), the way his songs tells little stories, and, of course, the trademark harmonica used on a few of his songs. If you like Bob Dylan, I think you came to the right place.

Setlist(s)

He wrote some song titles for his setlist, but he actually didn't really follow that closely to it. Some extra songs were added in, some were taken out (notably "Early Morning Night" was listed for the encore, but was not played). Please refer to the actual setlist that we've written out and ignore the photograph's setlist.

A couple of new songs on this set, "Keeping Yer Thin" and "Skyscraper Skyline Blues", the latter is actually pretty good. Gorman dedicated the song to all the skyscraper window cleaners and that "Not enough people talk about them... So this is that song!"

The lone cover song, Wilco's "Passenger Side" was played solo, much the relief of his drummer Andy, who apparently "ate a spicy burger."

By the end of his 45-min set, Gorman tells us that he's learning a whole new American culture. Like the way Chicagoans say "daaamn" to things they like. In Australia they seemed to shorten it to "dam, mate."

Of course, after playing their biggest hit of the night, "Shiny Gun", the song inspired a few fans in the audience to shout out daaaamn.

Australian singer/songwriter Fraser A. Gorman will be making his U.S.A. debut this Tuesday, October 6th in Los Angeles. He'll be doing a tiny US promotional tour for his album Slow Gum (House Anxiety / Marathon Artists), and will be making a stop at the 7th Street Entry next Sunday, October 11th. The US tour will end at CMJ Music Festival (College Music Journal) in New York.

Gorman has been compared to Lou Reed and Bob Dylan, and when confronted with this, he admits to being "a retro-rock revivalist" and that "country music sounds like rock n roll to me."

Opening up for the 7th Street Entry will be Sleep Study, who we saw in November 2013 and wrote that they had "retro power pop with slight UK influences".

Ready for one of the greatest Sunday's of the year? Make sure you come out to The Triple Rock Social Club on Sunday, October 11th for the Lydia show.

Lydia is an indie rock band from Gilbert, Arizona formed in 2003. I honestly never thought I'd get the chance to see these guys again. The last time I saw them was pre-2007, when I was still in high school. They went on hiatus around 2010 for about a year, but they are back and better than ever! The band has recently released their first single "Knee Deep" from the new record, Devil, produced by Colby Wedgeworth. Leighton Antelman (singer) and the new full band line-up's new release will be their fifth.

Lydia will be joined by The Technicolors (who previously appeared at the Varsity Theater with the Maine), Seahaven and Turnover for a night full of great music.

Ben Caplan is returning with his long-awaited sophomore LP, Birds With Broken Wings (set for U.S. release on November 6)... but you can preview those songs when he play them live on his upcoming extensive North American tour.

When asked why it took so long, Caplan admitted, "I think that a new album was probably due years ago, but whether or not I would have been able to pull it off the way I wanted to, that I don't know. I wanted to take my time and honor the process. There was a lot to learn. I wanted to make an album that was complex but with space for anyone to find their way into it. I wanted to collaborate with people who inspire me and find space for unexpected things. It takes time."

Nashville quartet Bully has been creating a whole mess of buzz lately. They dropped their Steve Albini-produced debut album Feels Like back in June to zealous praise from critics and fans and have been thrilling concert-goers with their live performances. Recently, the band played opener for the likes of Best Coast, but on October 12th they’ll be headlining a gig at the Entry. Sadly, tickets for this show have been sold out for a while, but seeing as Bully has been in the Twin Cities 3 or 4 times this year, I have a hunch that they will be back very soon!

Opening up will be Fake Limbs from Chicago and Heat from Montreal - two bands you will definitely want to show up early for.

How hard does The Lone Bellow vocalist/guitarist Zach Williams work? He was pooled in sweat, red-faced with blood vessels bulging, out of breath, and broke a string… and that was just after the first two songs.

The Brooklynized country trio (Williams along with Brian Elmquist - guitar, vocals and Kanene Donehey Pipkin - mandolin, vocals and touring with husband Jason Pipkin - banjo/bass, Brian Griffin - drums) finally played to an enthusiastic Twin Cities crowd at Mill City Nights in a complimentary performance co-sponsored by Paste Magazine (one of the band’s earliest supporters) and somewhat inexplicably, an insurance company.

After a few previously scheduled gigs were postponed or re-routed (though as a result, the band stayed in town, but didn’t play over July 4th weekend) and spring opening stints for Dwight Yoakam and Robert Plant, their spitfire 90 min. set turned out to be worth the wait.

Locals Sleep Study got the evening started with 35 min. of retro power pop with slight UK influences, including singles ‘Flower Girl’ and ‘Peace & Letting Go’, and even worked in a novel cover of Tears for Fears’ ‘Head over Heels’ (though I was wishing TFF’s ‘Broken’ outro followed it).

The Lone Bellow at the Electric Fetus

The Lone Bellow had a busy day before their evening show - radio station appearances and a generous 35 min. afternoon in-store session at local record shop The Electric Fetus. The band arrived before their guitars did, causing a short delay, but the unscripted laid-back set featured tracks from their debut full-length (on Descendent/Sony BMG), some audience Q + A, and a cover of John Prine’s ‘Angel from Montgomery’.

Their 90 min. evening set began with the appropriately titled’ You Can Be all Kinds of Emotional’, a delicate song that builds to crash like thunder, then becomes feather light again towards the end. Harmonies were on full display for singles ‘ You Never Need Nobody’ and the album’s opener, ‘Green Eyes and a Heart of Gold’, making me wonder if they hone their vocal synchronicities on their tour bus, driving empty stretches of highways between cities, making a soundtrack for each dark ribbon of road.

Kanene Donehey Pipkin

The set demanded your attention, songs often going from a hush to full band volume, and most of the young audience (and insurance agents ensconced in the balcony) compiled, sang along, and clapped in time; even slow dancing on the floor upon the band’s suggestion. The revelation as each took turns singing lead, is that all three are more than ample singers and could easily carry another band themselves if they wanted to. Pipkin, in particular, had the just-right amount of melody and twang to her voice, to songs like ‘Button’, which called for an unfettered, wailing blues stomp vocal.

Late in the set, the band reprised Prine’s ‘Angel from Montgomery’ prompting a crowd sing-a-long and finished strongly with ‘Teach Me to Know’, each of the trio repeating “Carried away, carried away” in perfect unison. Similar in Americana sound to The Civil Wars (which has the same producer), Lumineers, and The Avett Brothers, The Lone Bellow proved on this night that it was no accident Billboard magazine put the band on its “10 Artists to Watch in 2013” list. Expect bigger things ahead.
