Former Sonic Youth songwriter Thurston Moore, and his band billed as The Thurston Moore Group, headlined the sold-out Turf Club show in St Paul last Wednesday, July 12th, in support of Rock N Roll Consciousness (Caroline Records).
Opening up the show, previously unannounced, was Michigan’s Shells (not to be confused with UK’s Shells). Shells is lone guitarist Shelley Salant, who had the audience captivated with her long instrumental guitar-driven surf songs. She only spoke twice, once in the middle to introduce herself: “I’m Shells. I just drove in from Detroit.” and at the end of her 40-min set to tell us that she’ll be setting up merchandise if anyone was interested in talking to her.
The Thurston Moore Group took the stage shortly after Shells. Although sold-out, and packed in the front, the older crowd was very respectful and all seemed to agreed that Moore was a guitar genius.
If you’re not familiar with Moore, he’s best known as one of the songwriters behind Sonic Youth with his then-wife Kim Gordon. After 27 years of marriage, the couple separated in 2011, and so Sonic Youth, as a band, also dissolved.
Moore’s first post-Sonic Youth project Chelsea Light Moving (with Samara Lubelski, John Moloney, and Keith Wood) came out in 2012 (with an album in 2013), but quickly replaced with his new solo record The Best Day in 2014, and now Rock n Roll Consciousness in 2017.
As a band, the Thurston Moore Group, is solid. After all, bassist Deb Googe, guitarist James Sedwards, and drummer Steve Shelley (who previously played with Sonic Youth), have been working together professionally since 2014, and it shows. There’s no need for stage direction or how to play, the band medley ‘Cease Fire’ to ‘Turn On’ and participated in unexpected (or rather expected) instrumental jam, crackling, experimental fuzz, and feedback. Googe spent the entire show with her back to us, facing drummer Shelley.
Complete with custom video projection, the band created a musical journey of the Rock n Roll Consciousness, but ending at the beginning with ‘Ono Soul’ (a tribute to Yoko Ono), taken from his first solo record Psychic Hearts.
Rock N Roll Consciousness is out now Caroline Records.
