CHEB I SABBAH
chebisabbah.org
Born in Constantine, Algeria, Cheb i Sabbah (which means "young of the morning") spent his time in Paris and eventually settled in San Francisco in the 80s. He's been spinning and mixing music for a while, and eventually started releasing albums in the 90s. His last album, Devotion was released in 2008.
Well, according to his website and notes I have received, Cheb i Sabbah was diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer (stage 5 is the worst and final stage of cancer). Like most Americans, more common in performances/arts, he does not have health insurance. His weaken condition also means that he cannot perform to bring in a steady income.

SEUN ANIKULAPO KUTI

From Africa With Fury: Rise is Seun Anikulapo Kuti's sophomore album. It is released today, under Knitting Factory Records.
If the name 'Kuti' sounds familiar, that's because he is the youngest son of afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti (who I previously mentioned here). Looks like the music gene still runs in the family.
He's doing a few selective dates this Summer:
KHAIRA ARBY
