Brit Award Winners Catfish and the Bottlemen is headlining the mainroom at First Avenue, in support of their critically acclaimed second album The Ride. The record topped the album charts in the UK at #1 on the week of its release (above Drake and Beyonce)!

Singer/guitarist Van McCann was excited, “It’s class to be number one with the new album! We’re made up with that. Thank you! It’s just mad and we’ll be grafting all year to ensure things keep growing and these new gigs and new albums keep coming rapidly and in their droves.”

We previously caught the band in 2015, when they only had one album and wrote that the band didn’t have an encore because they ran out of songs to play: “We wish we had more... we’ve got no encore.”

As of this writing, there is no opening band listed.

Nashville’s Adia Victoria and her band Me and the Devil is headlining the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis next Wednesday, June 15th, touring in support of her debut album Beyond The Bloodhounds (Canvasback Records).

Expect Victoria to supernova when she makes her national television debut on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on June 22... so be sure to check her out at this intimate show.

Big Thief (led by Adrianne Lenker) to open. We’ve previously mentioned the band was releasing Masterpiece on Saddle Creek... Now that the album is out (May 27th), expect the band to play their ‘masterpiece’ on this tour.

The Claypool Lennon Delirium is the new supergroup consisting of Primus’ Les Claypool and The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger’s Sean Lennon, Beastie Boys’ Mark “Money Mark” Ramos Nishita and Fungi Band’s Paul Baldi. As the name suggest, this band is all about psychedelic space rock (with plenty of bass).

The duo recently released Monolith of Phobos on ATO Records and is out touring in support of the new record.

Chicano Batman to open. The cape crusader was last seen at SXSW with their new song “Black Lipstick”, featuring back up vocals by Saudia Yasmein.

The second Rock the Garden music festival on Sunday saw a seemingly bigger crowd, particularly near the front of the stage.

It's got to be tough to be first band on the bill... but not for Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, who saw a large fan gathering near the front the stage to witness the Sean Lennon-led band. Like their last appearance in Athens, the band were dressed in 70’s vintage clothing.

Apparently the band was not used to playing short 30-minute set, and at the minus-five minute mark warning, the band had to cut their set short by dropping off ‘Devil You Know’ and choosing instead to close out their set with their Syd Barett cover song ‘Long Gone’. The latter song had Charlotte Kemp Muhl switch over to keys.

The song was a hit with the cheering crowd ... and as the band left the stage, Lennon promised that they will be back soon. One thing was for sure, since we last saw him (at 7th Street Entry in 2014, as Sean Lennon in 2006, and as bassist in Chibo Matto in 1999) that he’s grown so much as a talented musician. Can’t wait for GOASTT to come back, now that psychedelic rock is more popular than ever!

Broken Arrow, OK native JD McPherson lived up to his latest album’s title and Let the Good Times Roll (on Rounder Records) for his rollicking 40 min. set on a more crowded festival afternoon than the day before.  McPherson’s retro blend of garage, rockabilly, and vintage r & b, played it more than cool on this warm and humid day, with upright bassist Jimmy Sutton giving his instrument an ample workout as well.

“This is a pretty good thing you guys got going on here”, McPherson said, taking off his jacket to reveal a ‘Smith Fabrication’ t-shirt in bold letters.

Fans twisted and shouted in the midday heat to ‘Fire Bug’, the new album’s title track, and ‘North Side Gal’; the latter dedicated to us “Norlanders” and sounding direct from a ’50’s diner jukebox, before the band ended with a nearly ten-minute “Wolf Teeth” to crowd howling.

How fitting on Father’s Day that the heir to the Afrobeat throne, Seun Kuti , led his father Fela’s band, Egypt 80, playing undoubtedly the highest energy hour of the weekend.  The Nigerian group was the worldbeat entry to the festival and the first African band to grace its stage.  Kuti and his fifteen-plus cohorts made their short time worth it with the tribal, jazz, funk, and rhythmic hybrid that his father pioneered.

Bandleader emeritus Baba Ani spent the first several minutes introducing each member and preaching the spirit of togetherness before the band launched into its set.  Kuti emerged to take the lead a song in, for ‘Opposite People’, a Fela composition, and proceeded to infectiously shimmy and shake for the next hour; like being chased by a swarm of bees, or like his clothing was on fire.

Shekere (a dried gourd with beads) player Okon Iyamba looked like the band’s smiling, ever-relaxed Keith Richards, in a smooth hat and shades.  Bassist Kunle Justice kept things grounded and funky, while the full horn section added additional danceability to songs from their latest, last year’s A Long Way to the Beginning (Knitting Factory Records).

Prior to playing their last song, Kuti took a minute to talk about Tetrahydrocannabinol (or commonly referred to as THC) found in marijuana. He said as he ‘astral-traveled’, that he discovered the real meaning of those letters: ‘The higher consciousness’.

With only a dozen live shows since they reformed earlier this February, you can tell the punk rock trio Babes in Toyland was not quite ready for prime time, having mis-timed and having to restarting a few songs on their set. Of course, this is punk ... no one cared because they're too busy moshing, slam dancing, and body surfing.

Despite what Wikipedia said, the Babes last show was in November 2000, so it's been 15 years since they were seen together, and 18 years without the original bassist.

As for the band, even with the shaky start, they sounded fantastic live. Kat Bjelland's vocals never sounded better, despite all the years of banshee screaming.

It's good to finally get Babes back in Minneapolis, where they belong. The band announced late May that they will be doing their first North American tour in 20 years, kicking it all off at St Louis in Missouri on August 27th and ending at Pop Montreal International on September 19th. The long awaited set by the Sunday headliners, came with a mystery or two attached – The Washington state band had just released their first album in eight years, Strangers to Ourselves (Epic Records), so there was a question of being rusty or not, and singer Isaac Brock had revealed that he had somehow sprained his ankle at the hotel the night before.

Both mysteries were revealed (no, not rusty, and too tight sheets, apparently) and Modest Mouse played a crowd-pleasing 70 min. set to the faithful that had been waiting these many years to see them again live.

Starting with 2004’s ‘World at Large’ , the band’s truncated festival set played most of their radio favorites and selections from the new album, with the exception of ‘04’s ‘Ocean Breathes Salty’. Single ‘Lampshades on Fire’, played early on, got people moving, ‘Dramamine’ reached back to their 1996 debut, and ‘Float On’ appropriately had balloons being bopped around over audience members’ heads.

Encore ‘The Good Times are Killing Me’,  from Good News for People Who Love Bad News,  seemed appropriate from the somewhat awkward Brock and crew, playing to a still-excited but weather-beaten crowd, that had been under the sun for six hours.

Four-piece Royal Thunder will be in Minneapolis next Sunday, June 21st. Stereogum called the band "the contemporary hard rock equivalent of Fleetwood Mac's Rumors" and NPR said is "a stunning hard rock record that examines what happens after a breakup."

The Atlanta-based band is currently touring in support of their sophomore album Crooked Doors (Relapse Records).

Wild Throne opens on all headlining dates, with Royal Thunder then joining Halestorm for a week of dates in mid-June.

Peruvian band Novalima will be in town on Father's day to promote their latest album Planetario set for release on June 16th via Wonderwheel Recording. The album's name signals Novalima's musical growth and international connections – much of the album was recorded on tour when they collaborated with top local and international musicians.

The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (or more commonly abbreviated to The GOASTT) just played to a very, very sold out 7th Street Entry show in Minneapolis last night, May 30th. The majority of fans were seemingly Beatles fans (as seen on their T-Shirts), and many of them saw their Conan O'Brien appearance.

This is my third time seeing Sean Lennon, the son of John & Yoko, so I have enjoyed seeing this versatile musician go from experimental to indie-rock and currently, along with his significant other, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, is playing more psych-rock. The two met at Coachella in 2006, formed The GOASTT in 2008, and released their debut album called Acoustic Sessions in 2010, and they are back with Midnight Sun (Chimera Music) in 2014.

As you can see from their setlist, the majority of cuts are taken from the new album with the exception of the single "La Carotte Bleue", "Jardin Du Luxembourg" with "The World Was Made For Men" from Acoustic Sessions, and a cover of Syd Barrett's "Long Gone."

Singing duties were shared by both Lennon and Muhl, with Muhl playing mostly bass until she took out the glockenspiel for "The World Was Made For Men."

For Sean Lennon, who is probably used to being in the spotlight, he is seemingly shy on stage. When he speaks, it's quite soft-spoken, almost whispering at times. When he jokes, they seem to be private jokes, only understood by Muhl. For example, Lennon said you can tell Muhl is from Georgia by her pronunciation of "America," which, as an audience member, we never heard her say, so we can only imagine Muhl saying, "'merica."

Also, the band decided to ditch the tried-and-true encore, instead incorporating the final two songs into their set without any awkward break.

The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger is currently on tour for their latest album Midnight Sun. Fans of psychedelic music should check out their show... especially because with the exciting news is that the band will be opening up for Beck, starting June 19th.

Sweet Ascent

Sweet Ascent is playing on Memorial Day Monday. The hardcore/rock band is based out of Lawrence, Kansas, and they were recently featured in Alternative Press (AP) Magazine in March 2014.

They are currently on tour for their latest EP, Hopeless Dreamers, which was 'an inspiring collection of professionally-produced songs.'

Opening up for this show are four, count 'em, four local bands: Ampherium, The Usual Things, The Modern Era, and Downstairs Attic.

As you know, Sean Lennon is the son of Yoko Ono and John Lennon. John's other son, Julian Lennon, also became a musician, but that's another story. I went out to see Sean Lennon at First Avenue in Minneapolis on a cold December day in 2006.

I've actually accidentally seen Sean Lennon before, in 1999, when I saw Cibo Matto for their Stereo*Type A tour (supporting Luscious Jackson). We were standing in line and there were all these fans with Beatles T-Shirts. I was pretty clueless, but it soon became clear when Cibo Matto took the stage that it was Sean Lennon playing bass in the band. I didn't know it then, but at that time period, Sean was dating singer Yuka Honda from Cibo Matto. That was the first time I saw Sean Lennon.

I caught Sean Lennon again for his Friendly Fire tour in 2006. Opening up for all his December dates was Jim Noir, from Manchester, England, although I am told that he was a no-show that night. He would have likely playing songs from his then-debut album Tower of Love.

I do have a photograph of Sean Lennon's setlist, as you can see, he basically played the entire Friendly Fire album live ("Friendly Fire", "Falling Out of Love", "Dead Meat", "Parachute", "Spectacle", "Wait for Me", "On Again Off Again", "Headlights", "Tomorrow").

The only non-Friendly Fire songs were a T-Rex cover, "Would I Be the One" and Into the Sun's "Mystery Juice". I hadn't heard Friendly Fire so the show wasn't that memorable for me, but it was apparent to me that Sean loved his new songs and was eager to test them out live.

Currently, Sean Lennon can be seen live at odd shows, including his appearance with Spacehog and Liv Tyler for the David Lynch Foundation. Sean is currently half of the duo The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger with girlfriend Kemp Muhl. Also, a little known fact, but last year, Sean and Greg Saunier of Deerhoof form Mystical Weapons, with their self-titled debut album from Chimera Music.
