The second the music started at Mill City Nights on Sunday night, I was transported into a past era where long hair ruled and Ozzy Osbourne was king...
From the moment Ecstatic Vision took the stage, it was all eyes on the musicians. People were silent, I mean dead silent. Usually when you're standing towards the back of a venue (where I hid out last night) you can hear conversations going on around you. That was not the case last night. It didn't matter where you were standing in the crowd, all eyes were on the musicians and all your ears could hear was the music, not conversation.
Ruby The Hatchet was the second group to hit the stage. Fronted by Jillian Taylor, Ruby the Hatchet is a psychedelic rock band from Philadelphia. This was their first time in Minneapolis and, judging by the crowd, will not be their last. The Fleetwood Mac sticker on the organ seemed to say it all. Ruby the Hatchet is very much a "throw back" band that is to say that you feel completely transported. It wasn't just the sound, it was also the look. Taylor walked out on stage with a black crocheted tunic on over tights, knee high boots, and a Stevie Nicks haircut straight from the 60's-70's. It completely fit with the sound that was coming out of this five piece band.
Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats were the headliners of the night. They are out on tour promoting their newest release The Night Creeper which was released earlier this month on Rise Above Records. Uncle Acid's sound is unlike anything I've ever heard before. They are a rock/metal/stoner rock band from the UK which a huge following considering they have only been releasing music for about five years at this point. Not only did they tour as opening support for Black Sabbath on sixteen dates of their reunion tour in Europe, last year when they toured in the U.S. they sold out 13 of the 15 shows.
Talk about a cult following, there were people in the crowd that didn't miss a single word. There was no pushing, no shoving but there sure was a lot of head banging and yelling the lyrics (which are ridiculously dark and creepy when you start reading them). The band seemed to do a good job of mixing new and old songs which made the crowd very happy. Usually when a band is touring on a new album, their set will consist of mostly new songs, last night seemed to be quite the opposite. That's not to say that they didn't play some new releases which seemed to help The Night Creeper hard copies fly off the merch table like hot cakes.
Last night was definitely not a show I would typically go to. I walked in feeling completely out of place but with an open mind. I walked out with a handful of new CDs.
