One of the most important Canadian band Broken Social Scene is making their return to Minnesota at the Palace Theatre next Thursday. The all-star collective (they have officially 19 band members!) has produced notable stars such as Metric, Feist, Stars, Emily Haines, Amy Millan, Apostle of Hustle, etc. This is going to be a great, fun time.

We haven’t seen BSC since 2009 and 2008, so it’s a rare treat that they can all come together to tour.

Expect to see these guys rocking together on stage at the Palace show: Kevin Drew, John Crossingham, Brendan Canning, Sam Goldberg, Charles Spearin, Ariel Engle, Justin Peroff, Leslie Feist, Andrew Whiteman, Emily Haines, Evan Cranley, Amy Millan, Jimmy Shaw, Lisa Lobsinger, David French, Ohad Benchetrit, and Jason Collett.

BSC’s long-awaited fifth album Hug Of Thunder is out now.

Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit to open. The last time we saw the band at Festival Palomino 2016, we wrote, “The band undoubtedly gained new fans as a result of their early slot and songs like ‘Old Old Fashioned’ seemed tailor fit to this type of festival. ‘The Woodpile’ remains a sonic tour-de-force and the band closed with 2010’s somewhat somber, ‘The Loneliness and the Scream’.”

Judah & The Lion has sold out their appearance at First Avenue for September 29th. We’ve always known they were a special band, especially after seeing them for the first time in 2014 and wrote, “It's feel-good singalong folk rock, think Mumford & Sons, and you get the idea. Many of their songs got their most dedicated fans to help sing along, especially on "Back's Against the Wall", where Akers stopped a second to hear his fans finish the lyrics... with the biggest grin on his face.”

Irish indie rockers The Academic will open the show. After this US tour, the Choice Music Prize nominee band will be returning to the UK to play some of their biggest headlining gigs this November.

Chastity Belt is back in town to support their new album I Used To Spend So Much Time Alone (Hardly Art) at the 7th Street Entry on Saturday, July 1st. We previously saw the all-girls band (Julia Shapiro, Gretchen Grimm, Lydia Lund, Annie Truscott) at Triple Rock Social Club in June 2015 and wrote, “Songs like ‘Drone’ and ‘IDC’ showcased some sophisticated guitar work as well as some snarky lyrical commentary. They were also often endearingly introduced by Truscott who would look over at Shapiro and Lund, grinning, and say something like, ‘This is a song about sluts. Cool sluts.’”

Swedish pop band Miike Snow is headlining First Avenue, kind of a side-gig from their current Phantogram shows.

The band was previously in town last year, July 2016, as part of the Go Fest show.

Miike Snow’s latest album iii, came out in 2016. It’s rare (and not to mention costly) for these bands from Europe to come over to the U.S. for touring, so make the effort to see them live. However, it’s really too bad that the band book the show on a July 4th weekend... where, at least locally, many fans will be at their cabins on a long 4-day getaway.

Show up early to check out Norway’s Klangstof and find out why the band was named Best Alternative Act at the Edison Awards in Holland (the Dutch equivalent of the GRAMMY Awards).

Local riot grrrl band Kitten Forever just held their 10th Anniversary show at First Avenue in Minneapolis last night, July 23rd. If you’re not familiar with riot grrrls, I suggest you check out some of our previous coverages, including a riot guide.

Although this was First Avenue’s mainroom, the show felt as if it could have been held at the band’s garage. In fact, talking to some fans, they all thought the show was at 7th Street.... and it’s not really obvious why the band chose to play at the large mainroom until you saw all the decorative balloons all over the stage and “Kitten Forever” in balloon writing.

The feeling I got from longtime fans were that of pride, nostalgia, and happiness, as they gather together to share their love for Kitten Forever.

Tony Peachka

Support for Kitten Forever’s 10th Anniversary Show were “long-term” band families - starting with Tony Peachka. The band's set actually spilled over their allotted 20-minute set, as the curtains started going down at the beginning of their final song.

The other thing to note is that their regular bassist (Bruise Violet’s Danielle) was not available on this night, so they were joined on stage by Frankie Teardrop’s Jordan Bleau.

Royal Brat

Royal Brat was up next. As we have previously mentioned, this is the band that featured guitarist Clara Salyer (from Babes in Toyland, Whatever Forever, and many other bands...)

Singer Alex Uhrich was kind enough to announce song titles like ‘Gut’ from their Negative Bone release. It would seem that this set featured many new or unrecorded songs. Among new songs were ‘Taxi’ (a song about sleeping with an older man), ‘White Car’, and their set closer ‘Avoider’. Of course, these are pending titles and may, in fact, change.

Joke of the show: “What is a pirate’s favorite word?”

Uhrich answered, “Most people think it’s the ‘Arrr’, but it’s really the ‘Sea’.”

Candace

Candace didn't quite sounded like any of the other bands on the bill. Instead of a DIY, garagey, or punk sound, Candace sounded a bit polished with their melodic dreampop / shoegazey (and even a little psychedelia) music.

They quickly asked the venue to turn down the lights, citing “It’s like OfficeMax up here!” as they play tracks from their latest album New Future.

Note: although the name Candace is new, the band previously went under the name Is/Is, but changed it in January 2016 to avoid association with the terrorist group ISIS. The band remained the same (lead singer/guitarist/bassist Sarah Rose, bassist/guitarist Sarah Nienaber, and drummer Mara Appel DesLauriers).

Condominium

Condominium sounded very hardcore metal and punk to me. Although we caught the band a few times in 2012 and 2013 (mostly at the Triple Rock Social Club), they actually have not been around in the recent years. That’s because their drummer Joe B moved to New York, so the band went on hiatus for a while.

Watching their raw energy on stage, you can easily see why Sub Pop Records was so impressed that they signed them for some 7” and cassette releases. Mosh pit/slam dancers will love this band.

Kitten Forever formed in 2006, because Corrie Harrigan would confess, “We started this band so we can play house shows.” The trio hadn’t actually meant to become a real band, but in DIY fashion, they were actually good at it... even though it seemed effortless on their part.

The feminist punk trio (Corrie Harrigan, Laura Larson, and Liz Elton) were clearly inspired by Bikini Kill (even covering ‘I Hate Danger’ near the end of their set) and even recently signed with Atlas Chair (the record label co-founded by Le Tigre’s JD Samson). If you didn’t know, Le Tigre was the pop/militant trio led by Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna.

Kitten Forever played songs from all three albums, including some tracks from their latest 7 Hearts. The cool thing to see was how all three band members switched roles in the band: giving each band member their chance to shine on the mic.

In typical punk shows, all their songs were under two minutes, and they rapidly closed out the show a little before 11:30pm.

Those who stuck around for the encore were given ‘Ice Cream’ and a medley of what sounded like Miley Cyrus’ ‘We Can't Stop” (because of the lyrics it’s our party, we can do whatever we want). It probably made sense, given that Cyrus started the Happy Hippie Foundation to help LGBTQ youth.

Bands who previously played earlier would show up on the encore with confetti falling from the ceiling. With that, we can’t help but say “Happy Birthday, Kitten Forever.”

Multi-platinum superstars Duran Duran is currently on their “Paper Gods World Tour”... they’ll be stopping by the Xcel Energy Center in St Paul next Saturday, July 23rd. Tickets starts at $30 and goes up to as much as $140, depending on how close you want to be next to the legendary band.

I did take a sneak peek at their setlists that they’ve been playing on this tour - and let me tell you: they do all the big hits like ‘Hungry Like A Wolf’, ‘The Reflex’, ‘Rio’ and ‘Girls on Film’, etc.

For the Xcel show, two openers are listed: Chic, featuring Nile Rodgers, and Tokimonsta.

There’s a new music venue in town, located in the North Loop, just a few blocks from Target Field, called Inbound Brewing.

Local pop quartet Southern Resident Killer Whales (Dan Hylton’s band) will be playing with American Housewife next Saturday. The latter is formerly known as Space Heater (Maureen Rudd and Stephanie Paquin).

Additional details:

Southern Resident Killer Whales is that Minneapolis-based, acoustic driven indie pop that you're growing to love, and American Housewife is music from the gals formerly of Space Heater (Maureen Rudd and Stephanie Paquin).

It will be a special night of music on Inbound Brewery's Keg Stage, conveniently located a couple of blocks from Target Field.

Lissie (Elisabeth Maurus) is back on tour, this time in support of her third album My Wild West (Lionboy Records and Thirty Tigers).

We previously caught Lissie in 2013 and wrote, “Although she is Midwest born, her music is a melting pot of an Appalachian-meets-Laurel Canyon sound that tips its hat to the past- more 70’s sounding on her debut release and a bigger 80’s-influenced sound on her follow-up, Back to Forever (Fat Possom/Columbia), courtesy of Irish super producer, Jacknife Lee.”

Originally scheduled for the Varsity Theater, the event was moved to the Pantages Theatre. Tickets sold for the Varsity Theater event will be honored at the door at the Pantages Theatre. Ticket holders for the Premium seats (sold as Mezzanine seats at the Varsity) will be directed to the Premium seating section on the main floor in the front rows.

Welwyn Garden City’s rock/punk band The Subways will be in town next Saturday, April 23rd, in support of the self-titled album (their fourth album). For the US tour, the trio (Billy Lunn – guitar, vocals; Charlotte Cooper – bass, vocals; Josh Morgan – drums) will be selling specially numbered LP edition of their record.

They’re quite proud of their new record, Lunn explained, “100% The Subways, it’s all us, we wrote, produced, and mixed the album ourselves.”

Opening will be Manchester’s five-piece Pins. We previously saw the all-girls band and wrote that they “lived up to their moniker, playing a sharp, diamond-in-the-rough hour-long set at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis.”

Local orchestral indie rock band We Are The Willows is having a CD release show for the conclusion of Picture (Portrait) with part II, an introspective, and more sonically diverse response to Picture (Portrait) Pt. I.

Ty Segall and his band The Muggers recently stopped by First Avenue in Minneapolis, as part of their Emotional Mugger tour.

Royal Brat

Queer punk band Royal Brat opened the show. The local band came to our attention mainly because of Clara Salyer (currently in Babes in Toyland and Whatever Forever). Singer Alex Uhrich came on stage in a see-through plastic “dress”, energetically singing “Swim”, from their debut cassette Negative Bone. We previously caught the punk band at their very first show at the Triple Rock in 2015 and was happy witness their first time at the much larger stage of First Avenue’s mainroom. The band handled the large audience and stage without any problems, as if it was just another day at the office.... however, there was a little boo-boo when Uhrich tried to lose the plastic dress and it got tangled on his mic cord.

With only one EP under their belt, they did manage to fit in a few new songs and a cover of Sleater-Kinney’s “The Professional” in their brief 20-min set.

Feels’ Laena Geronimo

Next up was Los Angeles’ Feels. As much as we love the band, I ‘feel’ their common name will get them in trouble. There are already five other bands sharing the same (or very, very similar) name, including Helsinki based indietronica band Feels and Poland’s successful band Feel.

The punk quartet was mostly women-dominated (with the exception of drummer Michael Rudes) and played most of their songs from their self-titled debut album on Castle Face Records. Vocals were traded between singer/guitarist Laena Geronimo, formerly of the band The Like, and guitarist Shannon Lay. Whenever Lay took over vocals, Feels sounded typically punk... very raw and loud. Geronimo, on the other hand, made Feels sound like something out of an Eastern-punk sound. It’s a good mixture of grrrl punk and psychedelia and garage. Personally speaking, I really love their strange music sound and looking forward to seeing them come back to Minneapolis.

Ty Segall

The ever-prolific Ty Segall is back with his latest creation: Ty Segall & the Muggers. With his eighth studio Emotional Mugger, album via Drag City Records, we see Ty Segall at his most experimental and more focused on setting a certain style and theme with the new album.

Before we talk about Ty’s exceptional musical output, we have talk about his all-star supergroup The Muggers. As we previously mentioned, his band consisted of King Tuff’s Kyle Thomas (dressed in an orange jumpsuit), singer/guitarist Mikal Cronin, Cairo Gang’s Emmett Kelly, and Wand’s Cory Hanson and Evan Burrows. With only a few dates on this current tour, the band sounded incredibly tight and well-rehearsed (even when they were improvising on stage).

Ty Segall came on stage in a baby mask, playfully whipping his band with what looks like an umbilical cord. Unfortunately, Ty did not commit to wearing the mask the entire show, instead taking it off for a few songs... and then putting it back on for other songs, etc. I understand that it is probably hot and uncomfortable under a mask, but it felt like he was only half-committed to the strange man-baby performance. Still, visually, it was a lot of fun watching Segall perform.

As you can see from the setlist, they played almost every song from Emotional Mugger, including “Baby Big Man (I Want a Mommy)” and “Squealer Two”. The second half of his set featured some rare older songs like “They Told Me Too” from Twins, “Thank God for Sinners” from Melted, and “Spiders”, a 2011 7” single.

Maybe it was the fact that a fan was stabbed to death at a Feels’ show earlier in that week, but the First Avenue staff was on high alert, watching closely at the rowdy circling mosh pit. As soon as a fight broke out during “Candy Sam”, the staff immediately jumped in and removed a rowdy fan. Then, during “Finger”, which had Ty Segall pointed his finger in the audience, there were more fights that broke out! Ty was surprised and confused, “I just pointed at you, and then you guys got into a fight, that scared the hell out of me.”

Ty Segall and the Muggers’ Emotional Mugger is out now. Knowing Ty Segall’s music career, I can tell you that this all-star band lineup and oddity is probably unique only to this current album release... so if you must check out the strange man-baby performance, you definitely need to see him on this tour.

Segall’s eight studio album Emotional Mugger came out this year via Drag City Records, and, of course, is on tour to promote the new album. Apparently his new live band will be called The Muggers, featuring: bassist Mikal Cronin, guitarist Kyle Thomas, guitarist Emmett Kelly, and keys Cory Hanson (Wand) and drummer Evan Burrows. Segall will play the part of “Sloppo”, a grown man wearing a baby mask.

Los Angeles’ Feels (not to be confused with Portland’s Feels, synth-trio The Feels, or New York’s The Feels, or Poland’s Feel, or London’s The Feeling) is also on the bill ... which, incidentally, they were in the news recently for an awful reason. A Feels fan got stabbed to death during a Feels-headlined show at the Underground DTSA (on Thursday, March 3rd).

The band, of course is devastated by the news and wrote:

We watched as the fight broke out, crashing onto the stage knocking mics over while the second band played, saw fists flying and more and more people dog piling on to try to break it up but still had no idea... then there was blood on the floor, cops and paramedics, the whole show was shut down of course, but still when we left we were under the impression that he was stabbed in the shoulder and was going to be fine.

Waking up this morning and finding out that he died in the hospital... There are no words. We are sending all of our love to the spirit of Nathan, his friends and family. We seriously hope that the murderer is captured and prosecuted to the fullest.

Local queer punk core Royal Brat to open the show (the band features Clara Salyer, from Babes in Toyland, Prissy Clerks and Whatever Forever). The new-ish band promised to showcase some new songs for this show.

Chicago’s Tortoise has been making music since 1990, and some critics have said that the band is behind the development of the post-rock movement (others have argued that Tortoise is only influenced by progressive rock that preceded them). Still, it’s hard to ignore that in their 26 years, that the band definitely has made an impact on experimental, post-rock, and progressive music. Since many of their shows are part improvisation, familiar songs may sound completely different than whatever they previously recorded.

Tortoise’s seven studio album The Catastrophist is out now on Thrill Jockey.

Opening up for Tortoise will be Chicago’s Mind Over Mirrors (aka Jaime Fennelly) and local Dosh.

Oneohtrix Point Never (a.k.a Daniel Lopatin) will be continuing his tour, following the release of Garden of Delete on November 2015 via Warp Records.... and the tour starts this Wednesday at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis. We saw him in 2013, and wrote that he was “ambient minimalist.”

The Triple Rock Social Club show is one of the great Red Bull Sound Select shows, which we have previously attended in the past. They are basically awarding you for RSVP (with will cost $3). For lazy people it will cost you $12 at the door. So it’s highly recommended that you RSVP now. Bonus: You get a Red Bull with purchase, so that $3 is basically you buying a Red Bull. The problem with the name “Joseph” is that it is too common. For example, there is a British DJ billing himself simply as Joseph, etc. The American (Portland, Oregon) Joseph band is actually three sisters: Natalie, Allison, and Meegan. They’re named after their grandfather.

We previously caught the sisters in 2014, and wrote, “They harmonize as only very close family members can achieve.... I got the impression that the sisters were very fun to be around.”

This co-headlining tour of Blue Oyster Cult and Jefferson Starship is taking place at Medina Entertainment Center next Friday, January 29th.

You can find BOC fairly active in the Minnesota area... having caught the 'Don't Fear the Reaper' band at Mystic Lake (22 Aug 2015), Blue Coupe/Taste of Minnesota (4 July 2015) and MN State Fair (25 Aug 2013).

The current Jefferson Starship (from the ashes of Jefferson Airplane) is led by co-founder Paul Kantner... and not to be confused with Starship (Mickey Thomas) ... Basically Jefferson Starship won't play "We Built This City" or "Sara" is the long and short of it. I have to add that in, because I have confused the two bands for many, many years.

Also speaking of Starships, remember Cobra Starship? They sang "Snakes on a Plane (Bring It)".

Sure, Ben Folds is appearing on "A Prairie Home Companion" and Smash Mouth will appear at Mystic Showroom... but the only band you really have to see is Babes In Toyland at First Avenue. This is their first non-festival appearance in Minneapolis. We caught them at their last show in 2000 and recently caught them at last year's Rock the Garden on 21 June 2015 and noted that their fans were just as wild and excited about seeing the trio again (even though the trio messed up a few times early in their set).

Still, we love seeing the band back together again - however missing from this upcoming show will be Maureen Herman. I don't think there was a reason given why she left, but it probably has to do with logistics (I think Herman is based out of Los Angeles). New bassist will be Clara Salyer. We like Clara, it seems like a good fit for her, and despite her young age, she's already a music veteran.

We have been following Clara since she was 17 years old, reviewing Total Babe in 2009, seeing them live at Fine Line (Feb 2010). After Total Babe broke up, she appeared with Air Conditioning School (see details) and she started Prissy Clerks, which we caught at 7th Street (Sep 2012)... and I believe that band is no longer around.

Recently she's in Whatever Forever and we caught them at Triple Rock (June 2015) and Turf Club (Mar 2015), and as Royal Brat at Triple Rock (July 2015).

I'm sure we're missing a few bands... but for now we can add Babes in Toyland to her ever-growing band resume!

Also on the bill are all-girls band Kitten Forever and all-boys band Ageist.

Kitten Forever on the lineup is no surprise, as the "bratty banshee best friends" previously toured with Babes in 2015. KF's third album 7 Hearts will be out on March 25th, 2016 on vinyl/digital via Atlas Chair (co-founded by JD Samson from MEN, SHARER and Le Tigre).

Winner of the 2013 "Are You Local?" vita.mn contest, Carroll (Brian Hurlow, Max Kulicke, Charlie Rudoy, Charles McClung) will be doing a tiny "Midwest Mini Jaunt", ending their tour at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis next Sunday, January 31st.

We saw the local band at the Varsity in 2013 and wrote that they had trouble playing a limited 30-min set, "leaving off a few songs off their setlist".

Their self-titled album came out September 18th, 2015.

Opening will be Rubert Angeleyes, who we previously caught at Basilica Block Party 2015 and Record Store Day 2015.

Frankie Teardrop

Local favorites Frankie Teardrop (singer/guitarist Frankie T, guitarist Dan E, bassist Jack W, and drummer Joey F) recently headlined the Triple Rock Social Club, closing out the evening of Sunday, July 26th, in Minneapolis.

Royal Brat

Local queer punk core Royal Brat opened up the show. This was the trio's first show ever. Note: the band features Clara Salyer, from Prissy Clerks and currently in Whatever Forever (with Red Pens' Howard Hamilton).

LVL UP from New York, plays punky, but sometimes restrained shoegazer jams. LVL UP reminds me of modern videogames.... Modern videogames give you achievement points for doing certain tasks as it pertains to the video game world. Because I can't think of how to describe music with words, I'll say this: if you leave your house to see live music, you will get a real life achievement point.
