Despite the 7” of falling snow, a miserable slow drive into Minneapolis, and freezing cold weather, the Porches’ 7th Street Entry was packed full of fans by the time the band took the stage.
Opening the show (and on time) was local musician Cheap Fantasy (aka Jordan Bleau). He actually liked the house music (Madonna’s “Angel”), that he asked the DJ to finished the song before he started his set.
So, if you didn’t know, Cheap Fantasy is the post-Frankie Teardrop project from Bleau. I’ve previously mentioned that Frankie Teardrop was my brother’s favorite local band, but unfortunately, the band broke up in 2016. As Frankie Teardrop, the four-piece band (Dan English, Jackson Woolsey, Konner Johnson, and Jordan Bleau) had a very garage/punk sound to their music, but as Cheap Fantasy, it was very different as a pop synthy karaoke one-man band.
Highlight of Cheap Fantasy’s 30-min set was when former Teardrop’s Dan English and singer Rose von Muchow came on stage to perform the title track for the new Life of Glass EP. Unfortunately, the stark bright projection and literally no lights, I couldn’t get a decent photo of all three of them on stage.
Cheap Fantasy’s five-song debut, Life of Glass is out now on Forged Artifacts.
Next up was North London’s Girl Ray, on their first U.S. tour. They are actually an all-girl trio with Poppy Hankin on vocals and guitars, Iris McConnell on drums, and Sophie Moss on bass, but for this tour, they’re joined on stage by Mike O’Malley (I think) as extra guitarist and keys. I’m pretty sure it’s O’Malley, as he previously appeared as one of the lead “professional legends/actors” in Girl Ray’s music video for “Preacher” (as seen on youtube).
Girl Ray’s debut Earl Grey (Moshi Moshi) is one of the “20 Best Pop Albums of 2017”, according to Rolling Stone. The trio confessed to loving slacker rock, American weird rock like Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Pixies, so they are absolutely thrilled to be in America.
Although Poppy carried most of the weight on vocal duties, they’re often harmonized or sometime vocal trade off to bassist Sophie. The intertwining vocals will, of course, category their music to sweet twee and indiepop. They’re a young band, so we’ll see how the band will evolve with the next album.
As with a debut album tour, Girl Ray played almost everything they’ve recorded and appeared on their record Earl Grey, including “Stupid Things” and “Just Like That”.
It’s been two years since we’ve seen Porches (in September 2016 and April 2016), and I can tell you that the band has really tightened up their performance and stage presence... thanks to the fact that band leader Aaron Maine kept mostly the same live band, including Cameron Wisch, Seiya Jewell, Dan English, and Maya Laner.
Maine played it cool, but you can tell that he was pretty happy about the sold out show. Minneapolis is still “the best”, even with the snow storm taking place outside.
With three albums under the Porches’ project, the band seemed mostly content to playing their new 2018 album The House, mixing in some fan favorites from 2016’s Pool.

Trivia: In the one year break from touring with Porches, bassist Maya Laner decided to start her solo project called True Blue. Her debut single, “Bad Behavior” was called “striking”, according to pitchfork.com.
