Wow, what a voice. Joan as Police Woman patrolled the Cedar Cultural Center last night, April 26th.
Roma di Luna started off the rainy night. According to their bio, they're a folk-rock band from Minneapolis, normally with six band members. It looks like they were missing two last night. And for some reason, I thought I heard singer Channy Casselle explained that the guitarist on stage was Adam from Solid Gold (we have previously mentioned them a few times), but I could be wrong since he didn't have the epic mustache the last time I saw them. He left for a song or two, and was confused if he was to leave during "Starling".
I liked Roma di Luna, I'm kind of surprise that I haven't run into them before. Their songs are about sky and nature and it sounds very sugary sweet. The highlight of their set was a cover of the Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize??" and they ended their short six or seven song set with "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea".
Joan Wasser, aka Joan as Police Woman, came on stage in a white jumpsuit, which looks like something from Prince's closet. For some reason, I thought there was a fourth band member, but for this show, there was only Tyler Wood on keys and Parker Kindred on drums.
Joan seems grateful and thankful her band and, especially, the Cedar. I didn't know that they previously played the Cedar before, but based on her banter, she really, really, really loves the place. I don't blame her, the Cedar is excellent and one of my favorite venue to attend.
The thing with the Cedar is that it gets super quiet. Anyone in the audience barely speaking can be overheard, and before "Forever and a Year" was played, there was a full conversation taking place between an anonymous man in the middle of the audience and Joan about New York's Tonic venue and Robo, the "Grateful Dead of Japan", etc.
Joan spends most of the time behind her keyboard, but I thought she was best at her guitar songs, "Chemmie", "Flash", and the excellent closer song, "Say Yes". The best song from her set was "Flash". This song sounded perfect live, and if she were to walk off the stage at the point, I wouldn't mind it (it's that good).
The encore after "Say Yes", was a solo-Joan doing a key and vocals version of "Human Condition".
Most of these songs you'll find off her The Deep Field album, which is available now from PIAS Records (Play it Again Sam). I picked up the double gate-fold vinyl, it came with a digital download.
