Rock The Garden is an annual music festival organized by Walker Art Center and The Current 89.3. As far as I can tell, the popular music festival usually sells out as soon as it is announced to the public because the tickets are first offered to Walker and NPR members.

As usual, whoever the curator is for Rock The Garden does an excellent job in picking the bands. We've previously covered all those bands on the lineup for 2013, which is taking place Saturday, June 15, 2013.

Here are some news update on each of these bands (since it may have been a while since we wrote about them).

Dan Deacon will be back in the U.S. this summer to tour with Animal Collective. You can catch his interactive video called "Konono Ripoff No 1" over at dandeacon.com/konono.

Low is touring overseas at the moment, there a few dates with Mike Doughty in June, and their new music video "Just Make It Stop" can be seen on youtube.

As usual, Bob Mould is on tour, although no longer for the Copper Blue (Sugar) anniversary tour. He's just announced some new August dates here.

We actually haven't been keeping up with Silversun Pickups, since we covered them three years ago in Australia. The Los Angeles band just showed off their video for "Simmer" at the Onion's A/V Club.

I love Metric, having already seen them a few times in Minneapolis. I'm glad to see the Canadian band is headliner this year. If you can't get enough of singer Emily Haines, she's just joined FLEET4HEARme, a project where proceeds of jewelry design collaborations go towards building a retrofitted recording studio in an orphanage with the organization HearMe. We covered Rock the Vine last year, so I can tell you it's a pretty easy ride to Saint Croix Vineyards in Stillwater (just east of St Paul).

This year's Rock the Vine will take place on Saturday June 8, 2013. Depending on how much you paid for your admission ticket, they all include free bottled water and parking. Paying extra will get you handcrafted beer and wine! Unfortunately, this event is 21+ due to the alcohol.

Read More Rock the Vine In its third annual Rock the Vine series, Rock the Cause is joining forces with Compatible Technology International to help fight global world hunger.

Rock the Vine is a music/wine tasting music festival in Stillwater, Minnesota. This is the third year hosted by the non-profit Rock the Cause organization.

The festival takes place just outside Stillwater at a winery, which is more or less like a large farm. So there is plenty of space. Weather-wise, it was the best you could ask for, in terms of festival weather. The sun was out all day and there were absolutely no shades, except for one lone apple tree. The smart/festival-savvy people brought their own pop-up sun shelter.

Food-wise there was only the Jamaican food truck, so it was pretty limited if you didn't like jerk or BBQ-style meat. There was also a popcorn and waffle truck.

The best thing was Rock the Cause provided free water and Vitamin drinks (which I have to say is pretty awesome; I've been to closed festivals where water costs $3 or more for a bottle). You can alternatively buy beer (or get free beer using the drink tickets) or $6 wine cups.

Most people didn't really show up until 3pm even for an all-day music festival. I personally checked in early at noon because I really wanted to see the first band (Lynhurst). I had previously seen the band when they were The Abdomen. For those who aren't familiar with the Abdomen, they are a family band with two brothers and their father. After they replaced their father with their sister (Mari) and moved to Los Angeles, they changed their name to Lynhurst (which is named after a Minneapolis park).

LYNHURST myspace.com/lynhurstmusic It's got to be tough to be the first band on, of the 700* 1,200 concert goers, only a few showed up early. Like a lot of concert of this caliber, their set is limited to thirty minutes. Highlight of their set is a cover of The Cardigan's "Lovefool". They ended their set with a song called "Runaway", which they co-wrote with Jonny Lang.

JOHNNYROOK johnnyrookonline.com Jonnyrook was a harder-rock band than Lynhurst's pop/rock. Their music wasn't really my thing, I ended up getting lunch and waffles while they play most of their set. One of the songs they did was called "Monday Through Friday" (the correct title is "M-F").

FAREWELL MILWAUKEE farewellmilwaukee.com Kate & Lara really likes Farewell Milwaukee, which they've previously written about. Farewell Milwaukee is one of the artists featured in Cities 97 Sampler, so they were more than happy to play that song, "Always Be Your Man", on their set. I think they ended their set with "Get Scared".

HALEY BONAR haleybonar.com Talk to random people at the festival, most of them heard of Haley Bonar and was there to see her. Except they thought she should be one of the headliner, only she was early (3pm). She played a pretty solid set, from an old song, "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" to a brand new song called "Bad Reputation".

WHITE LIGHT RIOT facebook.com/whitelightriot I've seen White Light Riot a few times now, and I never really know their songs. It doesn't really matter because they all pretty much rock. If you like that power brit-rock driving sound, this is the band for you. Everyone I know pretty much loves this band. They did a new song; I think they said it was called "Echo" or something.

HALLOWEEN, ALASKA halloweenalaska.com Halloween, Alaska is the last band on the bill (Savannah Smith and Old Soul, I am told played to VIP guests in a barn). I think they made the smart choice in having Solid Gold before the last band, as I can see from the crowd that they are slowing leaving the winery. This is a shame, considering that Andrew thinks they are a great band (although he did call their last album "Good band, fair album").

We've covered Solid Gold a few times and I've mentioned they are popular in the UK and drew comparison between them and recent hottie band Howler. But man, they can draw a crowd! You can tell because people were coming up to the stage to dance to their songs. This is a sight, because I've witness only people sitting around in the hot sun all day… then suddenly this happened!

They closed out their set with "Get Over It", clearly the crowd's favorite song.

W♥M135: The Golden Age of Minnesota Music

Is Minnesota experiencing a new golden age of music? MPR and The Current seems to think so.

In the current music Minnesota scene, there are a couple bands that's really blown up nationally, even overseas.

Hot Minnesota bands at the moment:

• Doomtree (all the Rhymesayers artists, including Atmosphere)
• Trampled by Turtles
• Poliça
• Howler
• Motion City Soundtrack

The majority of the show is about Semisonic and Dan Wilson. The band doesn't regularly release music or go on tour, but once in a while, Wilson and company will play a show here and there. They recently played in Mound, Minnesota (5/19/12).

Opening up for them was The Twilight Hours, featuring Dan's brother, Matt Wilson. We also discuss a little about Trip Shakespeare.

Song of the show is Semisonic's "Closing Time".

I've been to so many festivals that you have to buy "food tickets" to get food. Then you're left with like one or two orphan tickets that basically can't afford you anything. So you end up throwing away money. Say goodbye to that at Rock the Vine, you just pay with cash with 100% of the net profit going to supporting Compatible Technology International and Rock the Cause.

Speaking of wine, check out Michigan's wine coast at the Traverse City Wine & Art Festival this June 30th. There are 27 area wineries, and restaurants and performers, and their headliner is a Platinum recording artist Rusted Root.

Festival organizer Laura Herd gives more details, "This is the one event that brings nearly all the wineries of our region together to celebrate the sights, sounds and tastes of Northern Michigan. What really sets our festival apart is how we combine culinary and cultural artistry to stimulate and excite your palate, letting you enjoy the fantastic wines and ciders our region has to offer as you dance, dine, and watch extraordinary performers in the gorgeous and historic arboretum of the Grand Traverse Commons."

I went to NXNE last year, had a great time. From my experience with it, I wish the venues were closer together. Your best bet is to get a weekend subway pass to get around. As I recall, the prices for the festival was affordable as well, but if you really have to see a band, I suggest getting there early because there were a couple of shows that sold out.

Last year, we saw Devo and Men Without Hats, this year the headliner is Flaming Lips. Remember, this is early on, we'll hear more announcements and confirmations as we inch toward the festival in June.

This may be the first music festival that I've heard of that is targeted to underage music fans (ages 13-17). I believe you have to be between that age range to attend. I could be wrong, but it makes sense to keep out the 'creepy uncle' factor.

The Independent Weekly is bringing its third annual Hopscotch Music Festival to North Carolina. Like SXSW, this is a scattered venue event with 15 participating venues and over 175 bands officially listed to play.

Headliners are Built to Spill, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and The Roots. Since the pre-sale went on sale last December, only 200 VIP wristbands are left.
