The annual Record Store Day is tomorrow (Saturday, April 16th).

Here are some events taking place in the Minneapolis area:

DJ set that set the mood for some, and perplexed others. …

It was a beautiful perfect day for Record Store Day. While hardcore collects drove around town tracking down that elusive 7" or camping before stores open... I am more of a casual record store day hunter. If I see something cool, I'll pick it up... I figure all the good stuff are sold out before 10am anyway, so if you are serious about finding that key vinyl, I suggest you get to the stores before it opens.

Anyway, I got to the Electric Fetus store around 2pm to hopefully get my hands on some exclusive RSD 7", before getting a good spot to see They Might Be Giants. I've noted in the past that seeing an instore (for a popular band) is near impossible and not a great experience. I often wish they would hold these things in the parking lot, where they can pack in more fans and let music shoppers maneuver around without issues; particularly for the recent CHVRCHS and Lights appearances.

Dosh and Ghostband

Anyway, we caught electronic beatmakers Dosh and Ghostband as they mixed their beeps and bops with little or no breaks for their 30 minute set. The two are usually looking down at their controls, meanwhile dancing hard when not having to turn a dial. The announcer noted this and would later add that if you hire them for a show, that "Dancing is included."

There were also random last-minute performances (note: originally not scheduled), but they kept shoppers entertained when they waited for the next band. After Dosh & Ghostband, Prairie Fire Lady Choir showed up. They were a large group of women, all dressed in red, and sang choir version of popular and traditional songs.

The other group that entertained waiting fans were Brass Messengers, who we saw in 2012 with Fanfare Ciocarlia, did a conga line of upbeat songs.

Local garagey/60s surf Rupert Angeleyes had a really good turnout... including an overzealous dancing fan in the front of the stage. Normally, no one would mind dancers... but he was bleeding all over! When the Electric Fetus staffs tried to ask him to leave, he was resistive, saying "Leave me alone, I'm just groovin', man!" After a second attempt proved fruitless, three staffers were called in to physically remove the fan from the store. I didn't follow the excitement, but I saw police lights outside the store, which I'm assuming was meant for the bleeder. That was the highlight of the show.

Anyway, as you can see from Rupert Angeleyes' setlist, they basically played their entire Young Sunset album in their allotted 30 minute set ("Delicate Guy", "Crying For Who I Could Be", "Out of My Control", "Painters Mixing Paint", "When I Fell in Love", "I Don't Believe in Love", "The King of Dentistry", "Jealousy").

Realizing that they had "seven more minutes... seems only like yesterday", the band decided to quickly add "Yummy Candy" (not listed on their setlist).

Since the Record Store Day celebration was great for business, I'm hoping more stores would do these day shows to draw in more music fans. See you guys on Cassette Store Day.

NOTE: The They Might Be Giants instore performance will be included in the First Avenue sold out show review later today or Monday. We are working on it, so expect the usual: photos, setlists, tour dates, and extended notes. Just briefly, the First Ave show was "adults only" and had them play two full sets with a double encore. Double encore all the way!

We've been observing Record Store Day since 2008 and it's always exciting to see people celebrating music. RSD is so popular that it inspired Cassette Store Day, which takes place in September.

Anyway, there are quite a few RSD events taking place in the Minneapolis area on Saturday, but I'll likely be over at Electric Fetus most of the day, before heading out to First Avenue to see They Might Be Giants. Since the headlining show is sold out, your next best option is to arrive before 3pm to see TMBG at Electric Fetus. I may be bringing a CD album cover to have John & John sign it (hopefully they'll have time for autographs).

Also worth noting is if you like physical CDs, a limited number of BNLX's new album Good Light will be made available at Electric Fetus. If you miss this, no worries, there will be a full blown international release of the album (CDs, vinyl, digital outlets) later in 2015.

2) Paisley Park: After Dark (Friday/Saturday)

Prince hopped a plane to Coachella last weekend to watch Outkast with Janelle Monae perform, but he’s back in Minnesota and has again opened the fabled doors of Paisley Park to continue the series of late-night concerts he recently began.

Building as a showcase to spotlight local artists, Friday night features DJ Lenka Paris and Alex Rossi & Root City, while Saturday has New Sound Underground performing.

Prince himself has been in the news of late, taking a new approach to licensing his songs and re-teaming with Warner Brothers to re-issue older albums with unreleased tracks, while gaining control of his master tapes.

Will all of this compel him to take the stage for another legendary performance at his home base? – As always, the answer is a definite…maybe.

4) Avenged Sevenfold w/Hell Yeah – Target Center, Minneapolis (Monday)

the perfect cure for the Monday-back-to-work blues, this arena spectacle by the Huntington Beach, CA band is dubbed the “Shepherd of Fire Tour,” based on the band’s single of the same name, which hit No. 1 on both the Mainstream Rock and Active Rock charts.

“Shepherd of Fire,” from A7X’s current album Hail To The King, is the second single to reach No. 1, in addition to the title track. Vinnie Paul’s Hell Yeah opens the show for a pyro-filled, loud evening that will be like a musical hit to your jaw.

It's that time of the year again, Black Friday. Like last year, it's more like Black Thursday, as Kmart, Walmart and are opening their doors at 12am, 6pm, and 8pm, respectively.

If things goes well (especially if items are in stock), I'm hoping to score these:

The Last of Us (PS3) - $25 - Walmart

Beyond Two Souls (PS3) - $25 - Walmart

The Wolverine (BD) - $3.96 - Walmart

The truth is, I would ideally like to get these things, but often I ended up not getting them because they are out of stock or they sometime offer other (unadvertised) deals. We'll see how this plays out, but I'd just be happy if I can get the Last of Us video game for that price.

This year, Target's Black Friday deals aren't very good - with selections that doesn't appeal to me at all. They also seem to concentrate on the higher-ticketed items. I don't really need it, but the iPod 5th Generation is on sale for $179 ($229 minus $50 Target Gift Card) looks mighty tempting.

Best Buy is only advertising DVDs for their television sales. I'm only interested in Blurays, but like many of these things, I won't know it until I see it in the stores.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. will be releasing a special Black Friday Black Vinyl edition of their record The Speed of Things. The standard edition was released earlier in October via Warner Bros.

Emily came on W♥M radio to talk about some news and events.

Vu: I just saw the advance preview for Danny Boyle's "Trance" - a mind-bending thriller, about Simon (played by James McAvoy) who stole the Goya's "Witches' Sabbath" painting and forgot what he did with it. He undergoes hypnotherapist treatment with Elizabeth (played by Rosario Dawson), and that's when the movie enters into this weird surreal part of the film. It's one of those movies, like "Inception", that you want to watch again to try it fully comprehend the picture.

More details on TranceTheMovie.com, movie gets limited distribution this week. Soundtrack is typically really good. The "Trance" Soundtrack featured Rick Smith from Underworld - so it made sense to hear those pulse-pounding beats at the more intense scenes. Smith also co-wrote the movie's theme song, "Here It Comes", with multi-Brit Award winner Emeli Sandé.

You may recall that Danny Boyle put together one of the greatest movie soundtrack for "Trainspotting" (so good that they released part 1 and 2 of the soundtrack) and his personal British music choices for the recent 2012 Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

News: Margaret Thatcher passed away this week (April 8th) to a stroke. Thatcher's uncompromising style of leadership as Prime Minister, left a long lasting bad impression on the people in England…. Particularly on protest singers and songwriters, who wrote and sang anti-Thatcher songs. This is not a complete list, but the songs that I've heard:

News: Record Store Day 2013 is happening next week, April 20th. This year is bigger than ever (I say this every year!), and Emily throws down some of her picks: Mad Season's deluxe double-disc Above on Record Store Day. Mad Season was considered a supergroup, featuring members from Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees.

Big Star is releasing some singles on Record Store Day. This is to coincide with the release of the documentary of Big Star called "Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me", which you can check out the trailer on www.bigstarstory.com. The film was made possible by Kickstarter, which we previously covered.

Topic: Concerts for nostalgic acts are too high! Depeche Mode, Prince, Rolling Stones, etc., they are charging on average about $75 or more for one ticket, which is too much to ask. We're not even talking about hidden "convenience" fee and charges!

Song of the show: The Dandy Warhols's "Bohemian Like You", taken from their breakout album Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia. The album was released 13 years ago, so the band is heading out on tour to do all 13 songs from the Thirteen Tales album this year.

At the moment, only 12 dates are listed. I am assuming the 13th date will be in their original hometown of Portland?

Record Store Day 2012

Record Store Day happens the third Saturday of April. Although it was officially started in 2007 by Chris Brown, I think the movement didn't really reach international participation until 2008 when Metallica released their exclusive vinyl.

This year's Record Store Day is this Saturday, April 21st, 2012.

As a collector and music fan, I think this is a fantastic idea. Unfortunately, I have some issues with it. Most of these exclusives are vinyl only and I don't really have a great record player. The other problem I have is that the participating record stores will unlikely carry the record I want. Since technically the stores are only allow to sell these for one day only, so you basically have to pre-order these things.

Because of the popularity of RSD, there are a ton of "unofficial" special edition that aren't listed on recordstoreday.com. I don't have a problem with this, but it's quite confusing to the average music fan, especially because there are now over 200+"Record Store Day" exclusives, it's hard to keep track.

To me, the reason why I go to music store is to look around for bargains. I know, I'm thrifty. You can't really describe this wonderful feeling of finding this rare album in a store. If you have to pre-order them and it's waiting at the store… it's just not the same.

AKA "Feistodon", this Record Store Day split 7" features Mastodon covering Feist's "Commotion", while Feist covers Mastodon's "Black Tongue".

If you haven't heard, Feist has a new album, Metals (released last year via Cherrytree/Interscope Records). All the critics put it on their 'best of' list, even New York Times called it the #1 album of 2011.

In support of Metals, Feist is flying into the USA to do her summer tour. From the look at her August dates, it looks like she'll be doing loads of festivals.

They have a couple of RSD releases, this one is a split 7" release with Catherine Irwin. Both musicians have covered Hazel Dickens, a bluegrass singer that died last year. The 7" is strictly limited to 500 copies in hand-set letterpressed and silkscreened Arigato Paks.

Valerie / The Big Ship Barsuk 7" (04/21/12) RA RA RIOT/DELICATE STEVE rarariot.com Described as a hand-numbered white vinyl, this split 7" includes two covers: Steve Winwood's "Valerie" and Brian Eno's "The Big Ship". 500 copies only via Barsuk Records. You can actually hear the Ra Ra Riot's song via Stereogum.

Cyborg Sweetie Critical Heights 7" 45 (04/21/12) DIVA DOMPE divaprojections.blogspot.com London-based label Critical Heights has two exclusive singles for RSD: Talibam! and Diva Dompé. Diva Dompé is Los Angeles' musician, model, artist… and scientist ?? Diva is the daughter of Kevin Haskins (Bauhaus). Her RSD 7" is called Cyborg Sweetie.

CSC Funk Band Inspired by Gang Starr Electric Cowbell 7" (04/21/12) CSC FUNK BAND facebook.com Electric Cowbell Records is releasing New York's CSC Funk Band 7" tribute to Gang Starr. The reasoning behind the tribute was that CSC Funk Band played Record Store Day's pop-up store in Brooklyn last year and the theme was an all-out tribute to MC Guru (the lyrical half of Gang Star). I guess CSC Funk Band liked it so much, they've decided to put out an instrumental version for RSD 2012. Preview song below:

Do Ya Thing Capitol 10" LP (04/21/12) GORILLAZ gorillaz.com I actually downloaded "Do Ya Thing" last March when Gorillaz offered it as a free download. I'm pretty sure the band also released it as a 12" single, but the Record Day Store special they have is listed as a single-sided 10". It's also listed as 13 minute long, which I'm pretty sure is the same track that is currently streaming on gorillaz.com as "the 12 minute version of DoYaThing … in all it's potty-mouthed splendour."
