Rejoice, The Juliana Hatfield Three is back... and this time playing their entire Become What You Are album from start to finish, at the Turf Club in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on Sunday, March 8th.

Whatever Forever

Local band Whatever Forever opened up the show. The band is a bit of a supergroup, with Howard W. Hamilton III (of Red Pens), Clara Salyer (of Prissy Clerks), Dave Gatchell (of Selby Tigers... which would explain why I saw Arzu in the audience) and Jordan Bleau (of Frankie Teardrop). We like all those other bands, so seeing them all together under one band is pretty cool. I like that both Howard and Clara traded vocals, and I got the feeling that everyone contributed to writing Whatever Forever songs.

My favorite song on their set was "Born Bored", but the highlight has to be when they drew attention to "International Women's Day" (which was the same night, March 8th).

Soon as Whatever Forever ended their set, The Juliana Hatfield dedicated fans rushed to the front of the stage.

This was my fifth time seeing Juliana Hatfield, as either solo artist or with Evan Dando (of the Lemonheads) or with Minor Alps (with Nada Surf's Matthew Caws), so it is always nice to see her play again.

The nostalgic stage banters were fun to hear, especially when Hatfield tells us that the last time she was in the Twin Cities was 2003 and then asked if any of the audience saw them 12 years ago. Bassist Dean Fisher joked, "Their parents were at that show!"

Later on in the show, Hatfield wanted to get a bunch of 90s bands together, The Lemonheads, Letter to Cleo, Marcy's Playground, etc., in a music festival called "It Came From the 90s". In her mind, she's got it all sorted out, including the poster artwork and so on.

After the Become What You Are set, Hatfield was ready to toss out one of her guitar pedals. I felt that the second set was more fun... now that they got all the business of the 21st Anniversary Album out of the way. Starting with some solo songs, "What A Life" and "Dumb Fun"... before playing a block of new tunes from the official sophomore The Juliana Hatfield album, Whatever, My Love: "Wood", "Push Pin", and "I'm Shy". I have to say that the new songs (especially "Push Pin") sounded fantastic live.

The encore was "Nirvana", a song from my first Hatfield album that I own, Hey Babe. Before playing it, Hatfield joked, "My G-String is giving me trouble."

Since they've been absent from Minneapolis and Saint Paul for over a decade, the band promised us, "We'll definitely come back to the Twin Cities."

If you grew up in the 90s you definitely own a copy of Become What You Are. You also owe it to yourself to hear the record live on this tour, which continues now in the West Coast:

Originally a duo, Eternal Summers added a third member to record their newest album 'Correct Behavior' (available on Kanine Records), adding quite a bit more depth to their sound. On earlier releases such as 'Dawn of Eternal Summers', they had a lo-fi sound that I've always been known to be a sucker for. The newest release adds a bit more sparkle and production value, but definitely to their advantage. I've already listened to it more than a few times over the past few days, and am excited to see them play the songs live.

They are coming to 7th Street Entry on Tuesday, June 4th in support of 'Correct Behavior'. The show is 18+ and tickets are only $8 and will be available at the door. If you'd like to pre-order them, you can do that here.

I've been to a few of these Movies in the Park shows, and "professional"/seasoned families would bring their own blankets and chairs to enjoy the movie. I would also recommend long-sleeves and bug spray because of mosquitoes and other pests. Otherwise, this is perfect for the whole family.

"The Walker Art Center presents Summer Music & Movies: Roadways" will begin every Monday evenings, starting in July and ending mid-August. See schedule below. This year's films were hand-selected by Mexican artist Abraham Cruzvillegas, whose work is featured in a new show at the Walker.

I don't know if this is a recent thing, but this year, apparently, they are having musical guests play in Loring Park. These are local artists, and worth checking out if you've never seen them perform before.

"Goodbye Summer" is the new music video from Jonny Fritz, you can watch it here. The video was filmed in the desert outside of Las Vegas and stars Jonny Fritz, a woman and fireworks!

Commenting on the video, Fritz said, "I was in Las Vegas with Sean Dunne [video director] to help him shoot a commercial for a reality TV show. We got bored with that very quickly and Sean offered to buy a ton of fireworks, go out into the desert and fire them at me while I danced my ass off."

The song is taken from Fritz's new ATO Record release Dad Country, which came out late April.

I'm pretty certain if you went to see a local Minneapolis concert this year, chances are you probably saw Prissy Clerks. I've previously mentioned them before, particularly when they were known as Total Babe (a band that featured Howler Jordan Gatesmith).

Well, Prissy Clerks just released their debut album, Bruised or Be Bruised, which Prefix Magazine described them as sounding like "Pavement and Sebadoh" while NME said they sounded like Smashing Pumpkins (circa Siamese Dream-era). So certainly, if you're into 90's alt-rock, Prissy Clerks should be on your radar.

I am told the band will likely tour in support of their album, in the meantime, you can listen to the title track on Soundcloud.com:

Minneapolis-based Lucy Michelle & The Velvet Lapelles recently performed a session for Daytrotter. Personally, when Daytrotter switched to a "you have to sign in" to download, I haven't used them since.

Sean Moeller of Daytrotter writes, "These songs, while strong and backboned, come off sometimes as delicious whimpers, the people singing them willing to take any scraps that might come their ways…."

Four of the five songs played live were taken from their latest album, Heat, which was released earlier this year.

The Corin Tucker Band kicked off their "Kill My Blues" tour last night in Minneapolis at the 7th Street Entry. If you were lucky enough to have seen the show last night, I can guarantee that this was the most intimate show you'll ever see for Corin Tucker (I'm talking from experience of seeing Sleater-Kinney a few times.)

Prissy Clerks

Support band was Prissy Clerks. You might remember that they were previously called Total Babe. When their guitarist quit to concentrate on the more successful Howler, Total Babe re-emerged as Prissy Clerks with excellent guitarist Howard from Red Pens. I know, I know, it's totally an incestuous local soap opera thing that no one outside of Minnesota would care. Anyway, I didn't really know a lot of their songs, but I really liked the one that they said was their newest song.

As for Corin Tucker Band, even though this was their first night to support their latest album, Kill My Blues, you can tell that the band were pros. They were dying to play the new songs, and sure enough, as you can see from the set list, the majority of the set were from Kill My Blues. The remainder of the set was from their previous album, 1,000 Years, including "Half A World Away," "Handed Love," "Riley," and the set rocking closer, "Doubt." Of the new songs played live I really liked "Kill My Blues" and "Neskowin."

Encore was interesting. Two cover songs: Blondie's "Atomic" (this song was made more rock and emphasized on the guitars) and Gnomes of Zürich. I didn't know the latter song, but I think the reason for the Zürich cover is that this was an old 90s Minneapolis band, and it was just Corin Tucker Band paying tribute to the city*.

The Corin Tucker Band is currently on tour to promote Kill My Blues. The record comes out September 18th on Kill Rock Stars.

* Most bands usually cover Prince or The Replacements.
