Music Festivals 2012 (Part 6)

Summertime means lots of music events and festivals… once again, I am only mentioning festivals that were kind enough to send in information. Here is part six of Music Festivals 2012.

BLIP FESTIVAL

Their tagline is "30 low-bit underground bands in three nights" at The Gramercy Theatre in New York. I only checked on one night's tickets, but I am assuming they are within the range of $25 per night. I also haven't really heard of any of these bands, but if you're into the low-fi scene, I'm sure you know them:

As part of Philip Glass' Days and Nights festival, there will be an event, taking place June 25, 2012, to benefit the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur to cover a massive upgrade project. The event will feature Philip Glass & Joanna Newsom with Tim Fain at The Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. Pricing for this event is expensive, at $62 for bleednose to $140 for closer to the stage. If you can afford it, remember, it's helping out the library.

This is Sweden's largest music festival, in its 14th year. I couldn't figure out how much it is, but for five days it costs 1760,00 kr. I don't need a price conversation to tell me that it's pretty pricey.

The lineup is too numerous to list, but here are the bigger acts. Expect to see lots of Swedish bands, including our favorite Amanda Mair.

The popular Pitchfork Music Festival is in its seventh year, taking place at Chicago's Union Park this July. A limited number of single day tickets for each day of the fest are still available for $45 (this will probably sell out, as previous years).

They recently announced Japandroids (Friday) and Chromatics (Saturday) were added to the ever-growing list of bands on their lineup.

SXSW 2011: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

Bangles: Eternal Flame

South by Southwest, aka SXSW, is the annual film, interactive, and music festival that takes place in Austin, Texas. It would seem that this year (2011) is at its biggest, with reports coming at 17,000 registered visitors (grown from last year's 14,000).

The key word is registered, I suspect Austin draws at least three or four times that number. I have been listening to the "tech" part of the SXSW reports and it just sounds like it's become one giant party... and not so much the tech-thing. Some celebrities were spotted there, in particular, Felicia Day.

The music part of SXSW officially started late yesterday and will end this Sunday. Over 2,000 bands are officially registered to play, but obviously there are a ton of unofficial ones as well. If you walk down the street, some bands are playing in the streets.

Dan, man on the scene, was kind enough to send in his report:

So far we have seen Jamie Woon, Kid Canaveral, Withered Hand, OMD, Dry the Rivet, Bangles and I'm sitting at the new ACL Theater to see Bob Geldof.

Wednesday: Jamie Woon at the British Music Welcome Event. He is a techno soul singer. Not bad. Lacks in the melody.		Thursday: Bangles. Event name was Daisy Rock Maurice's Small Town Sound. One hour set with all the hits and a cover of the Nazz's "Open My Eyes" (Todd Rundgren's first band). They sounded great. The harmonies are still there.
Friday: Here is Yuck at the Pitchfork Show. Great indie sound for most songs. They had to ruin it with a 5 min feedback frenzy. Always lose interest in that type of song. Been done too many times already.		Friday: Edwyn Collins. Great set. I think it has to go down as most inspirational set I will see. I would know if I could do it myself. But played new, old, etc. Also let his son sing on one of the songs. Closed with "A Girl Like You".

Here are the last couple of weeks in music news. You may remember Ryan's post about Pitchfork Music Festival 2007, well it looks like 2008 will be another great year for this Chicago, Illinois-based organization. The Pitchfork Festival 2008 will take place July 18-20^th and will feature over forty bands.

I think this Festival is shaping up quite well, and who knows?  Maybe in a few years it will rival some of England's more famous Festivals like Glastonbury and Reading.

Other news should really come as no surprise: France is banning pirates, Duffy got some mojo, LeAnn Rimes makes her very own "My Little Pony", Beatles song making it onto Rock Band, insanely expensive gasoline prices are causing indie bands to stop touring, and how to make your very own Daft Punk suit. That last story inspired me to actually want to buy these inexpensive neon lights to design my own "Sleeper" logo shirt or something? Weekend project, anyone?
