Los Angeles/Las Vegas alt-electro band Parade of Lights got the evening started with a buoyant set of fresh songs, culled from their two EPs the latest called Golden, was just released on
.…
After three years away, they’ve decided to again get closer—
Nashville-based indie-rock band Wild Cub is finally back, with sophomore record Closer (Mom+Pop Music) and is on the road once more, with full bluster and a thunder clatter, stopping recently at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis.
The opener came in the form of one of our favorite Los Angeles electronic rock bands, Parade of Lights, putting the finishing touches on their follow-up to 2015’s Feeling Electric (Astralwerks), having released a few recent singles, as a taste of what’s to come.
Despite the usual dim lighting of this particular venue, the foursome (Ryan Daly; Anthony Improgo; Randy Schulte; Michelle Ashley) shone bright with their irresistible mix of electro and indie rock on songs like ‘The Island’, the new ‘Victorious’, and biggest single, ‘Golden’, with Daly glad to not be playing here in the dead of winter, as they did their last time through. “New album soon”, they promised.
Wild Cub roared out of the gate for their fifty-five minute set, beginning with the new ‘Clicks’ and clearly ready to show everyone what they’ve been up since they’ve been away, playing seven of the eleven tracks from the new record.
“‘It’s been a minute since we’ve been here—we’ve been tucked away in a cave making this record” singer/guitarist Keegan DeWitt noted, happy to see the turnout after a multi-year absence from the scene.
The band’s secret weapon is undoubtedly multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Bullock who can move to keys, guitar, or anything else, as the song demands, and embellish it distinctively while drummer Dabney Morris and bassist Harry West kept the bottom end and everything else, in check.
Songs like ’Wild Light’ had a jungle-like rhythm while staying buoyant, with West’s bass line being the foundation of that song, and the band is at heart, a bar band, so the venue seemed more than an ideal place to play to a mostly college-age crowd.
“We’ve waited a long time to come and show you these songs” DeWitt said after the new ’Magic’, also mentioning the other changes in his own life in the last three years- getting married and having a daughter. The rhythmic grooves of ‘Thunder Clatter’, their biggest song to date, had people shaking and dancing, a shot of tropical-tinged indie-pop on a crisp early fall evening.
By contrast, the closing ‘Go’ was a straight-ahead, chugging rocker, Springsteen-like in the chanting of its title, and steaming forward like a cruiser on the high seas, an exclamation point to their thirteen song performance.
‘Fire’ (on the setlist but not performed) would have been a nice addition, though it didn’t matter too much- Wild Cub already made the statement that they’re back out of the cave, and ready to rock live again.

Singer-songwriter/producer Dan Wilson proves you can go home again.
As a Tax Day treat for Minneapolis residents, local record store The Electric Fetus hosted Wilson for a free in-store performance on this...
Dan Wilson’s Re-Covered is out now. The unique album finds the Grammy-winning songwriter reinterpreting songs from his past, including a re-interpretation of his Semisonic band’s hit song ‘Closing Time’.
If you follow Wilson’s career, after Semisonic, he started writing hit songs for other artists, such as songs for Taylor Swift (‘Treacherous’) and Adele (‘Someone Like You’)… so, for the first time, we get to hear how Wilson would approach his own songs.
In addition to the album, there is also a deluxe edition CD with hardcover book, which contains drawings, essays, lyrics, and songwriting observations about all those songs he’s written.
The tour kicks off next Friday, September 22nd, at the Fitzgerald Theater in St Paul.

Wild Cub is playing the Triple Rock Social Club on Saturday, September 23rd, in support of their sophomore album Closer (Mom+Pop).
The last time the band was in town, they opened up for Bleachers in 2014… this time with Closer the band is headlining.
Show up early to check out
Parade Of Lights. We caught the electro-rock quartet in 2015 and wrote, “Singer Ryan Daly’s hair has even turned golden since we last saw them, with keys/synth player Michelle Ashley bringing plenty of enthusiasm while bass player Randy Schulte and drummer Anthony Improgo ably held up the back end. For whatever reason, this band that plays bright, sunny electro, was lit as dimly as London’s Underground during the blitz, making for a strange dichotomy that seemed counter to their music, though the songs themselves, remain irresistible.”
Should be a great night of music.

Los Angeles/Las Vegas alt-electro band Parade of Lights got the evening started with a buoyant set of fresh songs, culled from their two EPs the latest called Golden, was just released on
.…
It was a four-act night of indie and electronic rock… and a little hide ‘n seek to try to find the bands too.
Minneapolis’ The Nether Bar, one of the smallest venues in the metro to host nationally touring bands, was the location on this night, where most of the bands happened to play in near-to-complete darkness.
Calvin Heights
Opening the evening was St. Paul’s own Calvin Heights, a four-piece indie rock quartet who clearly didn’t get the memo and played in relatively normal lighting (though it all looks a little dank in this underbelly of bigger club Mill City Nights).
The foursome Brett Carey (Guitar/Vocals/Keys) ; Caleb Anderson (Bass/Guitar/Vocals) ; Ben McKeown (Drums) ; and Luke Arend (Keys) released their 2nd EP Tall Tales of the Confident Man this August and songs like ‘Dennis’ and ‘Lovely Melodies’ have a dreamy, sparse, and wandering quality similar in some ways to Bon Iver (they even have a song called ‘Eau Claire’ too) that proves being lost in the woods is not necessarily a bad thing.
Tribe Society
Washington Heights, NY band Tribe Society was next, getting the “no stagelights” message down pat by playing in complete darkness, save a pair of lighted vertical poles at the back of their stage that resembled lightsabers (the force awakens early!) and playing a sound layered with more toppings than a slice of NYC pizza.
Vocalist Gavin McDevitt seemed more hip-hop leaning, bass/guitar player Rory Given more hard and heavy, and flutist Seth Hachen adding some classic rock to the mix- flute + rock band makes people think Jethro Tull, but consider them Tull’s malcontent East Coast club-kid nephew instead. Springboarding from recent release, Stoner and Kings (Island Records), expect a continuous tracked mixtape next, with both originals and cover versions.
Parade of Lights
LA/Vegas electro-rock quartet Parade of Lights followed with an all-too-brief 25min set of catchy radio-friendly songs, mostly culled from initial full-length Feeling Electric (Astralwerks) which came out in June. The band enjoyed massive licensing success for single ‘Golden’ which was featured everywhere from the Olympics to the Golden Globes, but is still trying to make that bigger break where the band becomes as recognizable as their popular song.
Singer Ryan Daly’s hair has even turned golden since we last saw them, with keys/synth player Michelle Ashley bringing plenty of enthusiasm while bass player Randy Schulte and drummer Anthony Improgo ably held up the back end. For whatever reason, this band that plays bright, sunny electro, was lit as dimly as London’s Underground during the blitz, making for a strange dichotomy that seemed counter to their music, though the songs themselves, remain irresistible.
Closing band The Royal Concept had a built-in advantage in playing here- the Stockholm, Sweden four-piece has already culled a sizeable local following, no doubt helped by the fact that Minneapolis boasts a large number of people of Swedish and Scandinavian descent. Lighting was more pronounced with some strobing, though it still allowed the band to hide in dark spots at times.
Their hour-long set took mostly from 2014’s Goldrushed (avail only as an import here) as well as a couple songs from the new Smile EP (Lava Music/ Republic Records). “We haven’t played a smaller stage in over three years” singer David Larson mentioned as Filip Bekic- gtr, Frans Povel-drums and a touring bassist all smiled, keeping their heads down from hitting the overhead pipes.
‘Shut the World’ was written as the band was trapped during Hurricane Sandy in Pittsburgh was revealed to be one of Larson’s favorites to play and the EP title track, ‘Smile’ was a cheeky response to numerous online fan comments that the band never smiles in their press photos.
‘World on Fire’ featured heavy vocoder vocals while ‘Gimme Twice’ sounded right out of Phoenix’s catalog. ‘On Our Way’ and the single song requested encore ‘Cabin Down Below’ brought back the vocoder and Larson’s surprise that the crowd knew and even requested a song never even officially released in this country.
And like a cabin down below, the Nether Bar proved to be a dark and somewhat cramped venue, but the music of four very different but effervescent bands, helped bring a light to where there was none.

New York's Jonah Parzen-Johnson will also be at the show, lending a hand with his baritone saxophone and synthesizer, currently on his second tour of 2015.
Parzen-Johnson's latest is a travelogue, Three Reasons To Live Here, which was created as a result of spending nine weeks on tour.
Here's how the publisher described the book:
In the introduction to his travelogue, Three Reasons To Live Here, Brooklyn based saxophonist and composer, Jonah Parzen-Johnson, starts pretty big. “I want to be part of a community of people whose first allegiance is to empathy and mutual understanding.” After the release of his album Remember When Things Were Better Tomorrow in June 2015, Jonah spent 9 weeks on tour, mostly by himself. “I wanted something to do on the road that would mark the time, and immediately connect me to people I ran into as I hit different cities.” By the end of the summer, Jonah had collected three reasons to live in 34 cities in the US and Canada. “In the end, the idea is pretty simple. Empathy and mutual understanding can spread from the tiniest affirmation: I could live where you live.”

Brooklyn based psych-rock band CHAPPO (vocalist/multi-instrumentalists Alex Chappo and Chris Olson, drummer Zac Colwell, guitarist Dave Feddock) promise to bring the party to you! …
Mardi Gras came a little early for Minneapolis.
Two bands with Louisiana connections, Royal Teeth and CHAPPO, rounded out a high-energy lineup at the Triple Rock Social Club, warming the crowd inside as yet another sub-zero winter’s night lay outside.
Parade of Lights
Los Angeles/Las Vegas alt-electro band Parade of Lights got the evening started with a buoyant set of fresh songs, culled from their two EPs the latest called Golden, was just released on Astralwerks. The songs from the quartet (Ryan Daly, Anthony Improgo, Michelle Ashley, Randy Schulte) are nicely polished, incredibly catchy, and very radio-friendly, buoyed by solid electronic and traditional percussion.
The EP’s title track was appropriately just featured in NBC’s Winter Olympics campaign, and despite their somewhat forgettable name, expect bigger things from this band as they work toward their first full-length album.
Alex Chappo
The evening then took a spaceship detour for a trippy performance from Brooklyn psych-rock band, CHAPPO (vocalist/multi-instrumentalists Alex Chappo and Chris Olson, drummer Zac Colwell, guitarist Dave Feddock) debuting songs from their upcoming second album, Future Former Self, which follows their debut, Moonwater (Major Domo Records).
Though now based in Brooklyn, the band is originally from Baton Rouge, LA, which reflects in an underlying southern charm in the roots of their music. Their first single, ‘Come Home’ was an attention-getter, having been featured as a soundtrack for an Apple commercial, and the evening got started in high-tempo, with singer Alex Chappo crooning similar to The Darkness’ Justin Hawkins falsetto with a rock growl.
Alex in confetti sticks
The new album is said to chronicle a man’s journey through space to a black hole and while he reflects, and their second song of set, “about drifting away into paranoia” played into that theme. Influenced by The Doors, early Pink Floyd, and The Flaming Lips, the band promotes a full a/v palette to take in—a LED-lit reflective moon that changes patterns, psychedelic swirling background projections, and confetti sticks that the band and audience were flinging into the air.
CHAPPO
Another new song, about “drifting into the underbelly of the earth” and “discovering an underwater séance” became a musical journey of changing chords and trippy effects with the set ending with first album closer, ‘M.O.O.N. Water’. The band has the weirdness elements of a MGMT or Grandaddy, but musically is more rooted in traditional melodies which are enhanced by space-born keys and anchored percussion.
Lafayette, Louisiana’s Royal Teeth closed out the evening with their bubbling and buoyant positive pop sound that begs for greater radio attention. Their full-length debut, Glow (Dangerbird Records) has been out a while, so the band has been working in some newer songs into their set as well. Opening with ‘Hold Me’ about a moment right before the end of the world, any somberness in the lyrics is completely counter-balanced with the pure joy of their sound, with its jangling guitars, boy/girl vocals, and a throbbing collective drum sound.
Royal Teeth
Vocalists Gary Larsen and Nora Patterson trade off together perfectly, like a younger, more upbeat version of Canadian band Stars, while the rest of the band (Stevie Billeaud- guitar, Joshua Wells-bass, Andrew Poe-keys, Josh Hefner-drums) ably hold everything down musically. Their smoldering mid-tempo cover of Swedish electronic duo The Knife’s ‘Heart Beats’ adds extra percussion and makes the song their own, while ‘Mais La’ (French for “I can’t believe it”) pays tribute to their Louisiana roots with an effective audience call-and-response chorus.
Surprised that as many people came out in the extreme cold as did, the band their 45 min. set ended nicely with ‘Wild’, with its catchy, wailing vocal and singer Larsen taking the drum from the stage onto the venue floor for a booming finish.
Enduring the end of a long and brutally cold winter, it was a refreshing release to come and see three positive and energetic bands bring some warmth to the night.

Bomba de Luz vocalist Lydia Hoglund rocked the show with her fiery voice and folk rock sound. The crowd responded well to the show, and at one point they even sang along to the chorus when prompted by Hoglund. …
The evening started with the ethereal Beach House-esque sounds of local trio Strange Relations. Not only was their sound unique and enjoyable, but lead singer Casey Shaw also rocked the drums - giving Phil Collins …

FEBRUARY 25: 7TH STREET ENTRY Glasvegas w/ The Ceremonies
Scottish indie quartet Glasvegas is saying ‘hello’ to America again with a three week coast-to-coast club tour of intimate venues that give the audience a rare chance to see the band up close and personal.
Though it marks their 8th tour of the U.S., it’s been three years since we’ve last seen them on these shores, and they come in support of their third studio album, Later...When The TV Turns To Static (BMG), which was released late last fall.
Singer-songwriter James Allan again sets lyrics of heartbreak and melancholy against an epic wall of sound, as seen in the video for “If” from the album, which features a cheeky intro from William Shatner himself.
Freed from the pressures of any band’s second album, the new third record retains the emotional core of their debut and re-affirms boldly, that they are a band still worthy of attention.
Los Angeles band The Ceremonies, which feature the three Cook brothers, open the show with their own blend of indie-rock, chiefly influenced by UK 80’s bands such as Echo and the Bunnymen and The Cure, with poets William Blake and writer Aldous Huxley cited as major inspirations by oldest Cook brother and lyricist, Matthew.
The band is supporting their debut self-titled EP (Atom Factory/Capitol Records), which features a heartwarming cover photo of the three brothers together when they were toddlers.

Brooklyn based psych-rock band CHAPPO (vocalist/multi-instrumentalists Alex Chappo and Chris Olson, drummer Zac Colwell, guitarist Dave Feddock) promise to bring the party to you!
In 2012 the band released their debut album Moonwater (Majordomo Records) and found themselves with a lot of attention after single, “Come Home”, was the soundtrack for an Apple commercial.
The band returns with their follow up, Future Former Self, to be released this spring, which seems to be a concept album of sorts- “the record follows one man's journey through space to a black hole to help save mankind, while he struggles with the abstract concept of time and its fleeting nature.”
In addition to any space-borne theme, expect a full-on sensory experience featuring costumes, confetti, props (including an LED moon!) and a high-energy performance (Flaming Lips fans, take note…).
New Orleans’ own Royal Teeth returns to town with their own version of happy, jumping dance pop, as evidenced on their full-length debut, Glow (Dangerbird Records)and brings the Mardi Gras party atmosphere, to their own live performances.
