It was déjà vu all over again as Kansas City showed all their love, hazey and gooey, for Oxford, UK band Glass Animals at a very sold-out recordBar, with screams and cheers very possibly louder than the club’s walls have ever heard before.

The event was part of the band’s initial dates on their Déjà Vu Tour, playing a handful of small clubs like they first played when just starting out, one-tenth or so the size of their normally-played venues (i.e. we saw them last in 2017 at the 2800 capacity Palace Theatre); all dates of which, sold out not within minutes, but in mere seconds, making this the hottest and most desired concert ticket of the year, thus far.

Glass Animals (Dave Bayley – vocals/guitar; Drew MacFarlane– guitar/keys; Ed Irwin-Singer– bass/keys; Joe Seaward– drums) has developed a special kinship with Kansas City, one of its earliest and still-strongest US markets, as evidenced by the band coming into town a day early, to surprise fans with an impromptu meet and greet pop-up, and hiding a few much-coveted golden ticket passes around downtown, for the many fans that missed on tickets, to scramble to find with help from coordinates posted on social media.

The band took a well deserved break after their last tour, partially as a result of drummer Seaward being struck by a truck in Ireland while cycling, which resulted in serious injuries, but they have returned strongly with a few new songs, in anticipation of a new full-length to follow.

The eighty-five minute set (with no opening act) started with the intro music of Rupert Holmes’ ‘The Pina Colada Song’ and lights going down as the crowd’s yelling and cheering rose in anticipation and the new song, ‘Tokyo Drifting’ to begin things. “Kansas City, it’s SO good to be back!” singer Bayley announced, as the deep bass beats began the track.

The club was cramped and packed, but with everyone present smiling and happy to make it in, most already knowing all the words to even the very newest songs and singing along all night. Lighting, as with their previous shows, kept the band bathed in monochrome colors and patterns throughout the set (making it a bit difficult from a photo standpoint) and the always-in-motion singer Bayley first emerged in a baseball jersey, to soon remove it in favor of a simple printed t-shirt.

The tribal beats of ‘Life Itself’ had everyone dancing in the tiny amount of space they had around them and singing the chorus back to the band, even louder than Bayley himself could muster with an amplified mic.

“Our favorite city in the world!” Bayley confessed before a grooving ‘Black Mambo’ and the crowd’s continued singing along with every lyric. “We’ve been in the studio, working on some new s#*t, and I think some of it is ready to be played for you” Bayley announced, going into new release, ‘Space Ghost’, a trippy, psych pop number with pronounced percussion and rhythms.

For 2014 radio hit, ‘Gooey’ Bayley outdid himself, moving from the small main stage through the crowd to first perch atop a back table surrounding a support beam. Then, he briefly darted outside the club’s front door mid-song (something we’ve never seen before) to serenade the many fans outside that couldn’t get in, that still stayed to try and hear through the front windows, to then return inside to finish the song, while walking across the main bar.

After the new ‘Heat Waves’, Bayley said ‘Let’s do some dancing!” as the electro blips from the familiar ‘Cane Shuga’ started, with the crowd happily obliging. The audience basically provided most of the vocals for ‘Youth’ as Bayley and band looked on gleefully, and the main set ended with current single, ‘Your Love (Déjà Vu)’.

The encore began with the mid-tempo “SE02 E03’ and a collage of 8-bit inspired graphics projected on both the band and the venue’s white plastered back wall, then Bayley grabbed a fabled whole pineapple for 2017 hit, ‘Pork Soda’ with fans screaming and reaching for it like it was made from gold. “Pineapples are in my head” Bayley sang as fans’ heads bobbed, arms flailed and clapped along, and Bayley casually tossed the pineapple to a lucky fan, just before the song’s first chorus. 

For the longtime fans, it was déjà vu again, to see Glass Animals in a small and intimate venue like they may have first experienced; for the new fan, it was an extremely lucky chance to see a big band in a small club, and for everyone present, it was a very rare, fortunate, and memorable one-of-a-kind live experience that likely will not be forgotten.

Man had landed on the moon, Woodstock took over Yasgur’s farm in upstate NY, Vietnam continued to rage on, and four Englishman who had met at the famed Star Club in Hamburg a year prior, had re-convened in the city in 1969 to begin one of the most influential progressive bands in rock history--

Fifty-one years later as a band, Nektar returned to Kansas City (for maybe their first show since 1977 at Memorial Hall) for a career-spanning performance at recordBar. Over the five decades, lineups have predictably changed, with a few members passing away (including notably original guitar player/vocalist Roye Albrighton in 2016) and a split which finds two versions of the band currently in action.

Thankfully, the version touring the US in support of a brand new album, The Other Side (on Esoteric Antenna Records) is the more authentic roster featuring three original and two former members, and one new member, as well the returning Mick Brockett who handled the unique liquid light show which distinguished Nektar in the live setting and who has also contributed to their lyric writing.

With no opening act or intermission, the band began its 110min opening set with the 18 min side one of ‘Recycled’. From the 1975 album of the same name, it’s a sci-fi tinged concept piece concerned with environmental issues (still a very relevant issue today) and coincidentally, the album has also just been reissued this week on limited vinyl by Purple Pyramid.

Guitar/vocalist Ryche Chlanda was out front, alongside original bassist Derek "Mo" Moore with bassist Dembo and new keyboardist Scott framing them on the stage corners, and veteran drummer Howden holding it down on his kit alongside background vocalist Costello.

Following the first selection, Moore tried to recall his last time in the area, and thought it may have been a late-70’s appearance at “the old Soldiers and Sailors Hall”, the more formal name of KCKS’ Memorial Hall, which drew audible gasps from a few in the crowd not realizing it had been long.

The past would merge with the present as an epic medley blending two early 70’s songs, ‘Dream Nebula’ and ‘Roundabout/It’s All in the Mind’ matched together seamlessly with ‘Drifting’ from the new album, all enhanced by Brockett’s psychedelic graphics and patterns moving in and out across the venue’s back wall, and the wah-wah wails of Chlanda’s adept guitar work. “Any musicians out there, that was in 9/8 or 3/4/4/4, so if you couldn’t tap your foot, that’s why”, Moore remarked about the complex arrangements and chord changes.

‘Devil’s Door’ was a song first composed in Detroit in the mid-70’s but recently revived by the band after original guitarist Albrighton died (using his sampled riff as the song intro), and the track was dedicated to his memory, as lighting specialist Brockett visually weaved images of him amongst his abstract patterns and shapes.

1973’s Remember the Future, the band’s fourth album was their US breakthrough, borne from a long and furious studio session, and was what brought them to these shores to tour as support for Frank Zappa. Fans of the seminal album were thrilled to hear side one (four continuous songs) played in its entirety (sadly, no side two though, which has been played on a few other dates).

Things moved again forward to the 21^st century with the spanning ‘Love Is/The Other Side’, a musical journey that allowed Scott to flex his skills on keys, playing deftly off of Chlanda’s innovative chords. The new ‘SkyWriter’ which starts with a complex Howden stick tapping intro, actually has its roots from 1978 when Chlanda was first in the band, with the track originally called ‘Sky Pilot’.

The main set would end with selections from 1972’s A Tab in the Ocean, the band’s second album and a medley mixing ‘Crying in the Dark’ and ‘King of Twilight’ from the record, something Iron Maiden would cover in 1984 as a b-side to their ‘Aces High’ single.

Maybe because they’ve been at it too long, but there was no need to bow, head back stage and return after several minutes of sustained clapping, so the encore began straight away with 1974’s circus-themed rocker ‘Fidgety Queen’. The band ended things with 1973’s ‘Good Day’ best known on the ...Sound Like This album where a few days of live jamming in front of a handful of friends was captured to tape.

“I wish you good day, Good day to you now, I'm gonna leave you forever” Chlanda sang but from the enthusiastic reception and standing ovation, Kansas City hopes Nektar hasn’t left forever (or another forty years), before they return to town again.

Two-time GRAMMY-nominated blues-rock sensation Joe Bonamassa will be playing a two-night residency at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. Often hailed as one of the greatest guitar players of his generation, he almost single-handledly redefined the blues-rock genre.

Bonamassa’s new project (and backing live band) will be called The Sleep Eazys, featuring Bonamassa on lead guitars with Late Night with David Letterman’s Anton Fig (percussion), Musician’s Hall of Famer Michael Rhodes (bass), Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Reese Wynans (keyboards), Lee Thornburg (trumpet), Paulie Cerra (saxophone), along with Jade MacRae and Juanita Tippins on background vocals.

One of the most influential English rock band, Wire, just played the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis, to promote their latest album Mind Hive (pinkflag Records).

Wire’s music has always walked the line between punk/rock and electronic/atmospheric sounds. I feel most of the stark minimalism sound can be attributed to singer Colin Newman’s interests. This explains why he would take that experimental sound to his side project Immersion. Still, personally speaking, I do prefer the faster-paced, guitar-driven raw punk sound of the early Wire albums.

Anyway, the Fine Line Music Café show started off with Transmission’s DJ Jake Rudh, playing some tracks of post-punk British music.

Next up was what was billed as Wire DJs. This would be a random member from Wire. For the Fine Line show, it was Matthew Simms, spinning music from his laptop. With most DJ setups, it’s not visually an exciting thing. Simms actually sat, or sometime lay down, on the stage with his laptop. With the dancefloor filled with older fans, you actually couldn’t see him on stage unless you fight your way to the front.

Wire came on stage shortly after 9pm, and looking at the guys: Colin Newman, Graham Lewis, Robert Grey, and Matthew Simms, you can tell that these guys have been playing music for over 40 years. That is with the exception of Simms, who you can see was a lot of younger than the other guys. Simms, who was from another band called It Hugs Back, joined Wire in 2010 as a touring member.

Since their debut in 1977 with Pink Flag, the band’s been steadily and consistently writing and releasing music. Mind Hive marked their 17th studio album! While it’s easy to just do a Pink Flag anniversary tour. After all the record is called “the most original debut album to come out of the first wave of British punk” and influenced everyone from from R.E.M. (with “Strange”) to Elastica (with “Connection” and “Line Up In Line”) to Graham Coxon (with A+E album).

You have to respect the band to just decide to play one track from every one of their album, and to top it all off, five new songs from the new record Mind Hive. This wasn’t a greatest hits tour, and that’s just fine for the band, to do whatever they way without compromises… and their diehard fans appreciates that.

Appropriately, with a first quarter moon (where half the moon’s surface is illuminated) shining bright overhead outside, a full crowd at the garage at Knuckleheads in Kansas City, MO welcomed Nashville-based Americana band The Lone Bellow back to town on their Half Moon Light Tour.

The garage is one of four stages in this unique and historic venue, opened originally in the late 1800’s as a railroad boarding house near an adjacent amusement park. Its more modern roots date to 2001 and the venue features four stages: the 800-1000 capacity garage (opened in 2015), an outdoor stage, saloon area, and smaller gospel lounge. FYI, it is located near the active train lines, so leave with some additional time, as it’s likely a train crossing may delay your arrival and/or departure.

Early James opened the evening with band The Latest in support of his Dan (Black Keys) Auerbach co-produced full-length, Singing for my Supper (out March 13 on Easy Eye/Nonesuch Records) with the Alabama native (aka James Mullis) taking elements of blues, southern folk, and some raspy-voiced twangy crooning, that’s already caught eyes and ears opening for the likes of Marcus King and Shovels and Rope ,and an upcoming Canadian run with The Black Keys themselves.

James isn’t afraid to open his emotions, both when playing live and on record as the personal themes of most of his ten songs, seem like they were made first and foremost for his own reasons and release, rather than any preconceived commercial aspirations.

Often, some darkness frames the tracks, such as the loneliness from single, ‘High Horse’ with James singing “time’s been the thief all along, it’s the view from this high horse I’m on” though the in-between songs mood was lightened by the banter between he and bass player (with equally impressive sideburns) Adrian Marmolejo.

James also took influence from his Southern upbringing- the Gothic ghosts in stories, and his own grandmother, to permeate into his lyrics, and his set ended with ‘Blue Pill Blues’, another cathartic telling, this one about being in treatment and stopping his antidepressant pills cold turkey.

We’ve followed The Lone Bellow (singer/guitarist Zach Williams, multi-instrumentalist Kanene Donehey Pipkin and guitarist Brian Elmquist) since the band’s beginnings and first trips outside of Brooklyn, almost a decade ago, and they’ve just returned with fifth studio album, Half Moon Light (on Dualtone Music Group) with production once again helmed by Aaron (The National) Dessner, a somewhat somber full-length that manages to extract the joys of life, amidst the pains associated with death.

Their ninety-five minute set started as the new record does, with an intro seguing into ‘I Can Feel You Dancing’ a paean to Williams’ and Elmquist’s recently departed grandfathers, featuring an actual audio clip of Williams’ grandmother on piano. From there, more new tracks in the form of ‘Wonder’ and ‘Good Times’ featuring their precise trademark three-part harmonies and singing, “let no good times slip away” reminding everyone the value of waking up every day.

2013’s ‘You Never Need Nobody’ is a template track to showcase those harmonies, and the dichotomy of both ‘Enemies’ (described as “a love song”) and ‘Friends’ both from the new record, were explored live, melding their country, Americana, gospel, soul and blues influences into a mostly joyful stomp and shout live experience.

Williams joked about beating his opening act at pool, saying they were very much enjoying their tour together, and Pipkin’s distinctive vocals took center stage for the new, ‘Just Enough to Get By’, Like every good woman, Pipkin is backed by a good man, in this case her husband Jason Pipkin directly behind her on piano and bass, alongside drummer Julian (Whigs, Eagles of Death Metal) Dorio.

After the hot house rocking ‘Georgia Will’, things slowed down slightly with an acoustic mini-set and lights dimmed and the trio gathered around a single center mic. The band’s 90’s R&B influence shone through again, as the trio unexpectedly riffed into a nearly complete cover of Boyz II Men’s 1995 hit, ‘Water Runs Dry’, with Pipkin reminiscing listening intently to American Top 40 for the song and Elmquist calling it the second tune he learned on guitar.

Things really picked up towards the end of the main set, with the aforementioned new ‘Friends’, infectious ‘Green Eyes and a Heart of Gold’ from 2013, the gospel awakening of ‘Then Came the Morning’ and the emotional release of ’Count on Me’ the lead single from the new record, with its lyrics, “Let it break you, let it help you lay down what you held onto”.

The two-song encore began with one of their most heartfelt songs, 2013’s ‘Tree to Grow’, whose lyrics also happen unintentionally to tie in to the themes and loss reflected on the new album. Tempo picked up with a bass line similar to Otis Redding’s ‘I Can’t Turn You Loose’ to begin ‘Time’s Always Leavin’, the final song of the evening which had the band literally and lyrically slipping away behind the curtain and out into the half moon light.

While other bands may merge a similar amalgam of gospel, soul, country, blues, and Americana, none does that sound quite like The Lone Bellow, who are their most mesmerizing experienced live in concert, and as they sing in the new ‘Martingales’, “what a sound, what a sound”.

California’s rock duo Best Coast (Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno) is returning to First avenue this Monday, February 9th, in support of their first album in five years, Always Tomorrow (Concord Records).

We caught the band in Sep 2017, and said, “The duo actually haven’t released new music since California Nights (in 2015), but they were touring with Paramore, and saw an opportunity to book some headlining shows in some areas that Paramore wasn’t playing. Luckily that meant that band took over the Turf Club in St Paul on Monday night to a very happy crowd.”

Leap Day is a rare calendar day that only occurs once every four years, and in addition to being Superman’s birthday, it’s an extra chance to get out and see something special--

For the lucky that acquired tickets at a sold-out Bottleneck in downtown Lawrence, KS, that meant experiencing the soulful revival sounds of Durand Jones and the Indications.

The evening began with a forty-minute opening set from Chicago native Kaina Castillo who stylizes her name as KAINA and is out in support of debut full-length, Next to the Sun (on Sooper Records). Her soulful and emotion-laden delivery can be sometimes Sade-esque, other times the first-generation Venezuelan-Guatemalan reflects her Latin culture, and always is proud of her Windy City roots.

‘Ghost’ was written about “something no longer serving you”, 2016’s ‘Honey’ had the crowd learning then repeating the song’s chorus, and the title track, while having a positive message about the duality of human beings, is purposely delivered with some underlying sadness.

The salsa-flavored last song of the set, ‘Green’ was punctuated by the lighted disco ball spinning above, something the artist noticed hanging from the ceiling mid-set, and asked for it to be activated, which put the audience in even more of a dancing mood.

We’ve followed Durand Jones and the Indications for a few years now, and continue to be impressed with their evolution as artists and stage performers. Revival soul is still peaking with numerous acts taking their inspiration from Stax, Atlantic and Motown sounds of the 60’s and updating things, resulting in a fresh take on a timeless sound, and while someone like Leon Bridges is more Sam Cooke, Jones and group are more influenced by Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, and Curtis Mayfield, for a refined, but sometimes edgy delivery.

Jones, along with Aaron Frazer (drums/vocals), Blake Rhein (guitar), Steve Okonski (keys), and new bassist Michael Montgomery began their ninety-minute set with a silky ‘Smile’ followed by ‘Circles’ from most recent full-length, last year’s American Love Call (on Dead Oceans Records) with Jones’ soulful voice complimented by Frazer’s distinctive falsetto.

‘Cruisin’ to the Park’ was dedicated to any low riders in the crowd (by everyone singing along, you’d think the whole crowd had them) and things slowed down for ‘Walk Away’ but quickly built back up for the following three socially conscious-themed songs, a mini-set dedicated to a foundation Martin Luther King Jr began, which embraces equality and non-prejudice.

Jones was an ideal Curtis Mayfield for a cover still-poignant and lyrically relevant, and their own ‘Morning in America’ and ‘Make a Change’ echoed themes of Inner City Blues-era Marvin Gaye.

The past met the more-recent present during an extended instrumental medley showcasing the band members and putting soulful spins on riffs originally on Wu-Tang Clan, Notorious B.I.G, Eminem, and N.W.A. records, which they dedicated to the local record shop around the corner they made a stop at.

The crowd again became vocal for the chorus of ‘True Love’, swayed left and right for ‘Sea Gets Hotter’ which featured Frazer’s high-pitched vocals, and KAINA and band couldn’t resist jumping back on stage to dance along to the get down of the set-ending ‘Groovy Babe’, extended to give the band members each a proper intro.

The encore began sweetly with Frazer crooning, to the audience’s delight on ‘Is It Any Wonder’, which had a few women swooning, before Jones re-emerged (in his third different shirt of the evening) to help end things with the appropriate ‘Long Way Home’, thanking everyone for selling out the room for their first local show in three years.

A (love) call was sent, and that call was answered as Lawrence filled the room to groove along with Durand Jones and the Indications, making for one very memorable Leap Day experience.

Canada’s Destroyer returned to downtown Lawrence, KS and the Granada Theater over the weekend, for an evocative and always interesting performance, in support of latest full-length, Have We Met (on Merge Records).

Opening support on this solidly strong bill was provided by Eleanor Friedberger, one half of indie duo Fiery Furnaces and an outright solo artist herself, rebounding with latest full-length, Rebound (on Frenchkiss Records).

The generous forty-minute set allowed for twelve songs, with Friedberger sharply dressed in gold lame polka-dotted top, dark slacks, and shimmering silver low-cut boots. Her solo set started on keyboard/sequencer (cheekily intro-ing with a looped sound collage featuring a Beatles ‘Eleanor Rigby’ snippet) then Friedberger picked up the guitar with second song, the new ‘Nice to Be Nowhere’ and a strummed staccato riff began 2015’s ‘He Didn’t Mention His Mother’.

‘Inn of the Seventh Ray’ was grounded with a dizzy harpsichord sound, and after radio hit, ‘Are We Good’, she recalled her last stop in town, a headlining show nearly scuttled by “hurricane winds” and severe flash-flooding, though a few devotees yelled they were there that night as well.

‘Stare at the Sun’ featured some of her most passionate lyrics, “when I'm with you, everything's treasure, I forget what it's like to be gone”, Rebound’’s ‘In Between Stars’ got teased with only its first verse (maybe a time limit thing), and the set ended with 2011’s promise of ‘I Won't Fall Apart on You Tonight’.

The secret of Vancouver band Destroyer’s current lineup is that it is much more than just singer-songwriter Dan Bejar and a bunch of hired hands-- it is, in fact, a very cohesive and compelling musical unit that plays like they’ve been together for years, even minus a brass section that he has brought along previous.

The new album, Have We Met as usual takes the eraser to the sonic wipe board of the band’s sound and starts anew with more personal lyrics and a sound akin to two decades ago, during the Y2K-era scare of the last millennium.

Bejar’s stage appearance involves a mic set into a thigh-high stand which a big-haired Bejar then grabs and shuffles about singing in a uniquely pronounced and somewhat theatrical building voice, to usually then crouch down at center stage to replace the mic on the stand and grab a drink from a couple nearby plastic cups.

The ninety-five minute set started strongly with the new album’s first two songs, ‘Crimson Tide’ and ‘Kinda Dark’ and 2011’s ‘Kaputt’ invited everyone to “Step out of your toga and into the ocean” before the new tunes returned with ‘It Just Doesn’t Happen’ and current radio hit, ‘Cue Synthesizer’, playing almost all of the latest release on this night.

Lyrical references jumped from The Smiths to Shakespeare in a single verse on ‘Cover from the Sun’ and fans loved the darkness of 2017’s ‘Tinseltown Swimming in Blood’. Like Friedberger, Bejar doesn’t speak much between songs, letting the music do the talking, which as mentioned, was crisply played all night- not flashy or solo-garnering, just perfectly interacting as a complete musical entity, as they should be.

The new album’s ending ‘foolssong’ cribs a Michael Franti/Spearhead line to help get its point across and Bejar and band went way back to 2006’s ‘Rubies’ to end the main set, very suitably singing, “I didn't want to go, but leave I must, as gratifying as this dust was”.

The encore started in the best possible way, with Eleanor Friedberger (literally) jumping from her merch booth to on stage for ‘Hell’ as Bejar stepped to side stage banging a tambourine and Friedberger countering the bleak song title singing, “Every time I try to look into your eyes, an angel flies by”.

Fans’ shouted requests were answered with ‘Canadian Lover/Falcon’s Escape’ and an extended instrumental end jam to the song, drifted unexpectedly into the end half of The Doors’ ‘L.A. Woman’, to the gleeful surprise of both audience and band, all smiling as the song blossomed its own organic life, to end the evening.

Have We Met?-- those witnessing that hadn’t before now happily have, and Destroyer and Eleanor Friedberger provided an entertaining and always-musically interesting evening, by what is so far the best concert double-bill of the year.

Legendary UK band Wire is on tour in support of their new album Mind Hive (pinkflag Records). If you were a fan of Elastica, you know that they basically stole all their best hooks from Wire (including “Line Up In Line”/“I Am The Fly” and “Connection”/“Three Girl Rhumba”).

Anyway, we were pretty excited to see Wire’s singer Colin Newman as part of his side project, Immersion, in July 2018, and wrote, “It’s hard to talk about Immersion without talking about how influential Wire is to the punk rock scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Wire, had always had a great fast-paced guitar-driven sound and great vocals from Colin Newman. The same can be said for Minimal Compact, the Israeli rock band often associated with the post-punk/indie rock sound… So if you were expecting that same art/punk/indie sound, you may be disappointed in Immersion, as they sound nothing like their predecessor.”

Opening is billed as Wire DJs (which is a rotating band members as DJ), plus local DJ Jake Rudh, from Transmission.

March comes like a lion in the Kansas City / Lawrence, KS area, in terms of warm weather after a generally mild winter, and as far as live music, shows are startng to ramp up in frequency after the winter blahs period.

The month starts with the dark prog of Opeth, one of the best live Americana bands heads to Knuckleheads, prog legends Nektar make a rare appearance, legends themselves Blue Oyster Cult are still fearing the reaper, Glass Animals in a tiny venue (which sold out in seconds!), Spike and The Quireboys singing ‘7 o’ Clock’ in suburban Merriam, a Grateful Dead member at The Midland, and buzzing band Caamp hitting The Truman… and that’s only the first half of the month, with St. Pat’s and more shows to follow!

Opeth at The Midland- (7p doors, $35-$40) – the Swedish influential prog-metal band who has thirty years and thirteen studio albums under their belt, returns with In Cauda Venenum (Latin for “venom in the tail”) for Nuclear Blast under their own imprint. Wall of Sound already gave the record a perfect 10, so the live show has high expectations.

Nektar at recordBar (7p doors, $25-$30)- now this is a rare sighting! A prog-rock classic UK band who formed in Germany in 1969 return with new album The Other Side. After over fifty years, there’s been plenty of lineup changes and ups and downs, but anyone curious to discover some of the roots of progressive owes themselves a commitment to pay homage ‘Do You Believe in Magic?’ - Yes we do!

Glass Animals at recordBar- (7p doors, long Sold Out)- We’ve seen this ever-buzzing UK psych-pop band a handful of previous times and the band has released a couple of recent singles (newest is ‘Your Love (Deja Vu)’) in anticipation of a new full-length, and is heading out to play smaller clubs, with all dates selling out in seconds! If you didn’t score a ticket, you’re probably weeping all gooey and hazey and looking from the outside in.

Blue Oyster Cult at Ameristar KC (8:30p, $35-$50)- the classic rockers still bring it live, with members Eric Bloom and Buck Dharma still at the helm and going through five decades of hits. If you’ve never seen live, then Go, Go Godzilla!

Since their international breakout in 1990, they’ve released some twenty-ish records (including last year’s Amazing Disgrace), with singer Spike still leading the charge. Arrive early for Irontom, an LA-based guitar+electro group who splashed early on with music featured in a high-profile TV commercial, and has been entertaining live, ever since.
