Seattle’s Noah Gundersen headlined the Fine Line Music Café on October 1st, in support of his new album Lover (Cooking Vinyl).
Fellow Seattle-based band Lemolo opened the show. The band is really the stagename for songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Meagan Grandall. She is joined by Nathan Yaccino on drums and Torry Anderson on bass.
Lemolo previewed some songs from her forthcoming album Swansea, set for release on October 11, 2019… which included “Interlude” (the second single) as her set closer with her beautiful lyrics, “I was stuck in the swell, couldn't get to the beach. It was just as well, not to get closer to me. The whales were around, I kept hearing them sing. I was chasing a sound, that I couldn't achieve.”
I think the best part of her set was a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” (the non-radio friendly version). Being a Radiohead fan, I know that the band fought against changing their wording to “very” instead of “f****ing”, but they played the game and it got them fame… Of course, Thom Yorke regretted it years later and they rarely (if at all) actually performs the song live anymore. So it was good to hear a live rendition of it, but in a slowed down Lemolo style.
Noah Gundersen closed out the show. We’ve previously seen him in in Sept 2015 and wrote that he had a great voice.
In contrast to his radically heavier/rock-oriented album White Noise in 2017, it would seem that Gundersen has returned to his relationship/personal songs with his new record Lover.
It’s his preceding single “Robin Williams”, which started his set. As you know, Williams committed suicide, which was shocking to hear, since he seemed like a happy/funny person. Gundersen is a fan of the actor/comedian, and wrote the song in keeping the theme of deeply personal songs: “ “It’s about love, it’s about failure, it’s about drugs, it’s about sex, it’s about age, it’s about regret, it’s about itself (very meta, I know) and it’s about finding peace. I think it’s the most I’ve ever put of myself into something. It’s been cathartic. I’ve cried a lot.”
Gundersen would close out his Lover set with the title track, followed by “All My Friends” (also from the Lover album). The finale song’s closing line, “me and all of my friends gonna live forever” may sound cheery - but there’s a hint of sadness, knowing that it’s not going to last.
