If you live in Minnesota or Wisconsin, you probably made your way to EdgeFest at the Float-Rite Amphitheatre in Somerset, Wisconsin, during the Memorial Day Weekend. I went in 1999 because of mainly Hole. Tickets, as priced in the advertisement was $30 for two days, which sound like an incredible deal once you saw all the bands on the lineup! The music festival re-branded themselves as 93XFest, and eventually the annual music festival went away.

For those who aren't from the area, there is basically one main road to Somerset, and we basically had stop-and-go traffic as we got closer to the tiny city. We had also rented a small lot at the campgrounds, which was a lot more expensive than the concert ticket. Of course, no one could get any sleep, no thanks to all the drunk kids yelling, talking, shooting fireworks, and tailgating (we saw a car bumper crash at some point).

Since I only attended as a fan, I regret not taking any notes or taking any photos, etc. So I have very little memory of the whole thing.

It is funny what you do remember. Since there were three or four stages, I had to 'camp' out at the Hole stage and basically waited for them to go onstage, enduring Marvelous 3 and Sponge. I think I also saw Cake, which wasn't my first time that I've seen the band.

Anyway, across the other stage, I remember hearing the announcement that Backstreet Boys made a surprise appearance! I couldn't believe it, and I turned to look at the other stage. Hundreds of young girls ran toward the stage as five young men came on doing synchronized dancing... Then it all went terribly wrong: Flipp, in clown makeup, came on stage with fake baseball bats and pretend to beat the young men to a pulp. A little deceiving, but what an entrance.

By the time Hole came on stage, all I could remember was looking up at the stage and seeing singer/guitarist Courtney Love flashing me her underwear. She was wearing a short fluffy skirt and had no problem putting one leg up the sound monitor to show off her undies.

I'm pretty sure they played all their hits, including "Doll Parts", "Violet", and "Miss World" (they might have ended their set with this song).

This was pretty exciting to finally see the band. You have to remember that after Kurt Cobain's suicide, the band went into a rather long hiatus and didn't emerge until 1998 for their long-delayed third studio album Celebrity Skin.

Shortly after appearing at EdgeFest, Hole broke up (again) in October 1999.

Needless to say, I did not see all these bands, and realistically if you're at one stage, you're only going to catch about four or five bands.

After spending about $200 on a SodaStream, Jimi discovered that the product does not work/broken machine. He hates it and warn people from buying this crappy product. If you factor in all the extra costs, a drink it produces is probably well over a 75¢ can of soda from the vending machine.

In Jimi's latest video series, he reflects on record collecting and how it's being exploited by major labels. The offender in this case is Geffen's reissue of In Utero triple-disc vinyl that retails for $60. First of all, who doesn't already own the In Utero? It's just a way to exploit the fans (particularly with that $150 In Utero CD/DVD boxset). As much as I love Nirvana, I'm saying 'no thank you' to this 20th Anniversary Edition.

Personally, I think it's great that vinyl are back in fashion. I sometime pick up a random 7" at shows to help support the bands I love. Usually it's because it's the cheapest merchandise, usually affordable at a sub $5 price. To me, most LP should retail $15 or less, once it starts trending on $20 and above, I won't even consider buying it (unless it's a double disc/foldout or other things that warrant the extra cost).

Of course, besides the price factor, there's other things going into purchasing vinyl for me. Since I don't own a record player, I would prefer to have the vinyl bundled with a "free" mp3 downloads. I specifically look for the sticker that say downloadable, if I don't see it, I just won't buy the record. Of course, this has bitten me in the butt, because sometime the download EXPIRED (screw you Guns n' Roses LP!) or the record label is no longer online.

Did you catch the seventh episode of season 24 of the Simpsons? It's basically Portlandia (Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein) meets the Simpsons.

What's also pretty cool about the episode is that the Decemberists briefly appeared as themselves! It's exciting because the Decemberists took a "multi-year hiatus" after their The King is Dead tour (which ended last August). They haven't released new music since their EP, Long Live the King, which came out November 2011.

Colin Meloy and company were probably asked by the Portlandia people to guest star because the band is also based out of Portland, Oregon.

Anyway, I don't normally watch the Simpsons, but my sister said I should watch it this week for the Decemberists and so I did. Can't believe Matt Groening is still producing the Simpsons after twenty-four years! I remember seeing them when they first appeared on the Tracey Ullman show!

So, did we all survived 12/12/12?

Members of Nirvana, Dave Grohl, Krist Noveselic and Pat Smear, reunited for the first time in 18 years after Kurt Cobain's death with Sir Paul McCartney on the benefit show for the Superstorm Sandy victims. They collaborated on a brand new song called "Cut Me Some Slack," which can be seen on YouTube.

According to Wikipedia, over 2 billion people saw this "12-12-12: The Concert for Sandy Relief" special!

The song, "Cut Me Some Slack," will also appear on Dave Grohl's upcoming film "Sound City Movie."

McCartney's latest album is called Kisses on the Bottom, it was released earlier this year. The big controversy about his fifteenth studio album was that you couldn't find it on Spotify or any streaming services. His label, Hear Music (Starbucks) might have changed their tune, but McCartney, as far as I'm concern, is old-skool and it doesn't surprise me that he won't go streaming.

Kurt Cobain: The Graphic Novel

There's never been a more exciting time to be a Nirvana fan than now, 20 years after Nevermind was released.

I remember the first time I saw Nirvana on Spin Magazine (all of last month, Spin Magazine celebrated its anniversary) and Rolling Stone Magazine, and pretty much everywhere else. They were really HYPED. But you know the first time I heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and not able to understand what the heck Kurt Cobain was saying, it wasn't like any song I've never heard! History was made.

Anyway, Nevermind got a special 2-disc release last month, but super fans will probably want to pick up the deluxe 4-CD/1-DVD edition. I think it retails for about $50, a little too rich for my blood. Besides, I already bought the album when it was originally released.... still, who would blame me for lusting after its packaging with rarities, b-sides, and alt mixes.

Can't get enough Nirvana? Gibson Guitar had just announced its upcoming release of Krist Novoselic Signature RD Bass! This Signature model can be seen on various Nirvana tours in 1991. One thing to expect is that the bass guitar will be massive, quote Novoselic "I play Gibson RDs from the 1970s and it's incredible to now have my own signature model. This is a big bass! I am 6'7" tall and these long-scale beasts fit me physically. You've got to pound those heavy grunge riffs and you need the weight to do it. At the same time, there's plenty of fretboard that accommodates the finer runs and fills higher on the neck." Just to give you a little background, I love comic books. I've started collecting since 1985 with Crisis on Infinite Earths #1 (I maintain george-perez.com). I am an old-timer, I still prefer printed comics, but I do understand that the medium is moving towards digital.

Anyway, Kurt Cobain: The Graphic Novel is basically a comic book app, reprinting Omnibus' Godspeed - The Kurt Cobain Graphic from 2003. While the pages are readable, I wish they'd gone in and digitally clean up the colors or make it more vibrant, because it just look like they scanned the artwork. My other gripe is that the application requires iOS 5.0 to run the software. Don't really understand why it needs iOS 5, there's nothing fancy about the graphics or anything.

The comic book is basically a biography of Cobain, from his childhood to his eventual suicide. I was kind of surprise how the writer (Barnaby Legg) and artist (Jim McCarthy) paints this picture that Cobain was like Jesus Christ - at least playing with the cross and angel wings images. I know that during Nirvana's final tour, they played a lot with the religious elements, but according to the comic book, these things were with Kurt Cobain when he was a boy).

If you're familiar with Comixology, the Kurt Cobain: The Graphic Novel works the same way - you can tap on an image and it will zoom in the panel... making it easier to read (especially on an iPhone or iPod). I recommend reading it in vertical mode on your iPad for the best experience.

The only extra feature is that get a rather long introduction, which goes uncredited (I am assuming the writer Legg wrote it), and a "About" page talking about the source material (Godspeed - The Kurt Cobain Graphic).

If you're a hardcore Nirvana fan (and over 18 years old), you should consider picking up this iPad app. If you want to take one step further, the printed Godspeed - The Kurt Cobain Graphic can be purchased at musicroom.com for £9.95 (the iPad app is cheaper at £3.99).

Tributes

I've a couple of Crickets/Buddy Holly and Bobby Vee albums that I ended up listening to all day today. They sure don't write them like they used to.

Since it would be Buddy Holly's 75th birthday, if he were still alive, so there's actually a few tribute album to the thick-rimmed glass-wearing rock pioneer.

Listen to Me: Buddy Holly is one of the albums, coming out September 6th, 2011, via Verve/Forecast in the US (and eOne Music in Canada). The album is produced by Peter Asher (with Songmasters), and it features a collection of tribute/cover songs, all originally written by the late Buddy Holly. Some of the artists involved, includes Ringo Starr (Beatles), Linda Ronstadt, Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac), Natalie Merchant (10,000 Maniacs), Jackson Browne, Cobra Starship, Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), Chris Isaak, Pat Monahan (Train), Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy), Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra), and Zooey Deschanel (She & Him).

In case you were wondering what Songmasters' name attached to this project, they are supporting emerging talents to carry on Buddy Holly's legacy. Since 2009, Songmasters has given out The Holly Prize, an annual award presented by the Songwriters Hall of Fame to recognize and support aspiring young musician/singer/songwriter whose work exhibits the qualities of Holly's music.

While the above tribute is more centered around established and older musicians, it would seem that Rave On Buddy Holly speaks more on the modern music listeners with such artists like Paul McCartney, My Morning Jacket, Cee Lo Green, Justin Townes Earle, The Black Keys, Florence + The Machine, She & Him (Zooey is double-dipping!), Modest Mouse, Julian Casablancas (Strokes), Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Fiona Apple and John Brion, Graham Nash, The Detroit Cobras, Kid Rock, John Doe, Karen Elson, Nick Lowe and Jenny O.

The album actually came out last month (June 28, 2011), via Fantasy Records/Concord Music Group. I don't have a copy, but I'm curious what Fiona Apple & Jon Brion's version of "Every Day" (one of my favorite Holly song) would sound like. I can only imagine Apple to ooze of sex and weirdness.

I'm not sure if you can still get this, but Spin Magazine is giving away Newermind, a collection of covers by Meat Puppets, The Vaselines, Butch Walker & The Black Widows, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Midnight Juggernauts, Titus Andronicus, Amanda Palmer, Surfer Blood, Foxy Shazam, Ema, Telekinesis, Jeff the Brotherhood, Charles Bradley & the Menahan Street Band. I was told that the album is free until July 25th, but as of this writing, it's still available at facebook.com.

You are required to "like" Spin (lame, I know)... but it's cool, I actually like Spin Magazine, they give away a lot of free music.

Since I have a lot of music to shift through, the only song I listened to from this tribute is the Meat Puppets song, "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I've heard a lot of "Teen Spirit" covers, this isn't one of my favorite - but there are very few bands that can do Nirvana justice.

GERMFREE IDENTITY
It was at the Hunx and His Punx show (05/01/11) when I first heard that Poly Styrene had passed away. It was a random conversation with a fellow X-Ray Spex fan. She's gone, but she's definitely not forgotten.

The latest news is that Michael Jackson impersonators paid tribute to the late Poly Styrene for the video "Ghoulish". Having just watched the video, it's about a Michael Jackson audition, and it turned into a massive Thriller-dance throw down at the end. Really fun video.

I think the real irony is that the song "Ghoulish" was inspired by Michael Jackson himself. Her lyrics about seeing through Jackson's mask of "crimson lips and charcoal eyes" to see that he is "quite a nice guy", even though she's never met him.

I know, I know, she's not gone for a week and already I got a note about a mini-mix tribute by Diwon.

Off topic, but I've also noticed all these compilations called Amy Winehouse Tribute/Collection appearing on iTunes and Zune marketplace. I know they have to strike while the iron is hot, but doesn't it seem weirdly greedy? In fact, Microsoft apologized for tweeting "Remember Amy Winehouse by downloading the ground-breaking 'Back to Black' over at Zune." Microsoft didn't need to do that, by all accounts, her death brought her album album "Back To Black" back on the charts.

For a while, it seems that Seattle, Washington could do no wrong in terms of producing some of most diverse bands: everything from metal (Queensrÿche and Nevermore) to indie, punk rock (Harvey Danger, Goodness, and The Presidents of the United States of America) to grunge (Nirvana and Soundgarden). Waxwing was among those bands, and for a while they were rocking it on radio and TV show ("The OC").

By 1999, lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Rocky Votolato, was starting to write gentle songs that didn't fit in the style of Waxwing, and before you knew it, by 2003 the band band broke up. Votolato, himself, is still going strong and will be releasing his latest album, True Devotion, on February 23^rd on Barsuk Record.

Unlike the synth-pop sound of youth with their recent release, Votolato is more like folk-like sound of aged. Usually with his acoustic guitar and with the help of percussions. Songs like "Fragments", "Sparklers", and "Red River" are typical Votolato songs, illustrating a story, but hearing the passion in his voice, it sounds like the story is being told by someone who experienced the story.

Sometime I imagine Votolato to sound like another favorite, Don Henley. I don't know if this is a bad thing, since this will conjure up images of "oldies". Nothing wrong with that, I think, like Votolato and Henley's voice, that they are a voice of trust and experience. If you like storytelling, if you like folk and country music, I think you'd love Rock Votolato.

Undoubtly, the band that put Seattle on the musical map is surely Nirvana.

Between the official three studio albums that the band produce, I would have to admit that I like Bleach the least, even though some fans might protest that I've sold-out. In fact, I think In Utero is Nirvana's finest hour, go Steve Albini!

The thing about Bleach, was that I did visit it after Nevermind, because, like most people, we were unaware that there was an album previously. Bleach, at the time that I listened to in the early 90s, was too raw and borderline metal. When I say raw, I mean the music really sounds like it wasn't recorded in a proper studio or something.

Thankfully, Sup Pop Records decided to revisit the album and release it in a deluxe 20^th edition format. Since I'm assuming many of you already own a copy of Bleach, I'll be talking mostly about the extra new stuff in the Deluxe Edition.

First of all, the packaging is pretty sweet. The paper package folds out to reveal a picture of the band in a car (see picture). The square-bound 50+ page booklet contains some nice rare early photographs of Kurt Cobain and the gang (including Chad Channing, who also clearly signed the Sub Pop contract). They all look so young in these pictures, I'm pretty sure many casual fans have never seen them before.

Bleach - Deluxe

I did get a kick out of seeing the original picture of the master recording that was sent to produce 1,000 White Label (for a mere $1,100.00). Also, the first and last page of the original Sub Pop contract is shown in the booklet as well. The contract tells me that they had a one year commitment with a two year option should they remain on Sub Pop - but obviously history tells us that they went to sign with major-label Giffen Records with Nevermind in 1991.

Anyway, there are "new" bonus 12 live songs included on the deluxe Bleach. The recording comes a Portland show at the Pine Street Theatre in 1990. The live audio sounds surprisingly crisp (although the audio starts to degrade with clicks "About a Girl" and onward), I particularly enjoyed hearing their cover of Shocking Blue's "Love Buzz" and The Vaselines' "Molly's Lips" live.

Chances are, you probably already own Bleach, but I suggest you look into the deluxe edition. It's remastered from the original master tapes and it comes in a nice package. Plus, I believe the album retails for only $12, which is an unbeatable price for any deluxe editions... now if only Giffen would do the same thing for Nevermind and In Utero (I suppose that would also mean that Courtney Love would have to approve of such things).

Corporate rock sucks. Zombie Kurt Cobain recently made an appearance on ROCK BAND 5, which some fans are saying that it's "too soon" and how the music franchise is just interested in money.

 

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (live)

Not to be left behind, Geffen Records is hopping on the bandwagon by announcing the release of Nirvana Live At Reading, out on various formats: Limited Edition CD/DVD, DVD only, CD only, and 2LP. All available on November 24^th (the Limited edition comes out November 3^rd), just in time for that mad-shopping craze known as Black Friday.

Fans will cheer knowing that the official release is taken from the soundboard source, in glorious 5.1 surround sound, and they can finally toss out their crappy bootleg of this show.

Interestingly enough, this is the concert where Cobain came on stage in a wheelchair and played the entire show in a hospital gown. Hmm, foreshadowing something, are we?

I can't claim to actually be all that hipster when it comes to Minneapolis bands (there are so many of them!), and I've definitely never heard of Lynhurst. To be fair, they've spent most of their time in Los Angeles, where they've been writing/recording/performing in the concrete city.

So, we have here three siblings: Mari, Matt, and Jake. All under 23 years old, the youngest being the singer, Mari. My first impression of their album, Field Day (released July 21^st on DKE/Anatomic Records), is that it's weepy soft pop with young sassy vocals and lots of lyrics.

If you like what you heard, you can download a free track of "Exactly" from the official website. The song is radio-friendly, with a hint of guitar plucking and orchestral. It's cute and non-threating.

So the good news is that they're back in the Twin Cities. They have a CD signing thing at Cheapo Records in Uptown tomorrow (Friday, September 4^th). Then on Saturday to be on KARE 11 Morning Show, followed by a show at the Fine Line Cafe.

Remember Rockapella? You know, they were the house band from the original "Where In The World is Carmen San Diego?" kids program? For some reason, I always think of that one-time joke of Saturday Night Live's parody of "Where in the World is San Diego?" - in which most contestants would already know it's in south California.

So, I got a note that the band is auditioning new tenor/baritone singer. They are looking for someone over the legal age of 18 and under 49. You can send your submissions to the senior-hating group to audition[a]rockapella.com with biography/resume, photos, audio/video. Alternatively, there is the snail mail method (details on their website).

Deadline is September 15^th, so hurry. In the meantime, who wouldn't enjoy hearing that song one more time?

Rounding out the news is Maximo Park cancelled North American Tour, Brendan Benson debuts on the #1 Billboard Heatseeker chart, and hard-rockers Slayer announces "World Painted Blood".

Sad as the cancellation of Maximo Park, here's a band that's starting their US tour dates: Batrider (batrider.com / myspace), the band that Sally calls "Sad and beautiful".

I thought I would do something different for gathering news, since you may have noticed an absent of the weekly news. News will now be delivered though Links, from a variety of music news sources. I think the "links" links actully have a feed, so you can subscribe to this using your favorite rss newsreader. I personally use google reader myself, with about 500+ items every hour!

BO DIDDLEY
Topping the music news is the death of Bo Diddley from heart failure on June 2^nd. This R&B/Blues artist got his start in 1951 playing at the 708 Club in Chicago, Illinois. By 1955, Bo recorded some demos, "I'm a Man" and "Bo Diddley", the later went on to become a #1 R&B hit.

His early songs made him so famous, that he was asked to be on the Ed Sullivan show, but was eventually banned from subsequent appearance when he played "Bo Diddley" instead of a cover song of "Sixteen Tons".

That didn't end his career, instead Bo went onto record more hits.... and the rest is history.

Random vu-thoughts: it would seem to me that Bo Diddley had a passion for pop culture and genre, take for instance his "western" themed album titles: Have Guitar Will Travel (based on the western tv show "Have Gun - Will Travel") and Bo Diddley is a Gunslinger (with the title track having references to the famous shoot-out at the OK Corral). Later on, he would also have his "beach/surf" theme: Surfin' with Bo Diddley and Bo Diddley's Beach Party, all probably inspired by the teen-movie Beach Party.

 

The Get Out Clause - Paper

UNDER SURVEILLANCE
I also wanted to talk about the innovative video by The Get Out Clause. My my understanding, the band wanted to shoot a music video, but didn't have the finance - so they thought up the idea to have surveillance cameras film them in performance. Under the Freedom of Information Act, they requested the footage of their appearances and pieced together their video for "Paper".

The video became viral and have spread all over the UK press and picked up by NPR, making the band an instance success overnight! (That was in May).

With all the interests, you can pick up their EP, to be released July 7^th and "hand made by the band". Judging from the picture of the pre-order, it looks very cool.

Anyway, I think their video is such a cool idea, but I can't help but feel uneasy how "big brother" England's become, no?
