As usual, the Rock the Garden did a great job organizing the music festival. Although the original scheduled was delayed about 30 minutes, because of the weather... once the music started, they did an amazing job getting things back on track.

We’ve covered a lot of music festivals in the area, and Rock the Garden has always been our favorite because it’s very well organized. Everything from extra additional entry points to friendly security to food trucks to free water area, it’s always a delight to attend Rock the Garden.

Expect more photos soon, this is just a quick post to get the main setlist and some photos online. Stay tuned...

Some quick notes:

Low Cut Connie blew us away. Their explosive set even had Nikki Lane wanting to attend the Philadelphia band's upcoming show at First Avenue on November 1st.

It’s a shame, but London’s Shame had to cancel their appearance. They were replaced by U.S. Girls, who said, “We’re the best replacement you'll ever get.”

Kamasi Washington introduced us to his father (Rickey Washington) on soprano sax for the jazzy song “The Rhythm Changes” (featuring Patrice Quinn on vocals). Quite fitting, especially on Father’s Day weekend.

Clearly the best thing about Rock the Garden was on Feist’s set. The Current’s Mark Wheat walked on to help sing “Century”.... which is “almost as long as it’s been since Feist played in the Twin Cities.” The Canadian singer was last seen at the Minnesota Zoo in 2012, and before that in 2007 at Pantages Theatre.

Local rhymesayer P.O.S. had the entire Garden Stage singing along to every word on his set. He has an incredible local following. Highlight of his set was bringing on Dwynell Roland to “Get Down”.

Father John Misty had a whole Minnesota orchestra behind him (players Leah Ottman/LOTT, Cameron Kinghorn, the Laurels String Quartet, Dan Lawonn, and Devan Moran).

It is all about Rock the Garden this Saturday. This will be the second year which the Rock the Garden show return to the Walker Arts Center. We kind of know what to expect: the large main stage and a minor, smaller stage for the local bands. This year’s Garden stage will feature U.S. Girls, Chastity Brown, and P.O.S..

Over at the main stage, snarky Father John Misty will headline... however, personally speaking, we’re pretty excited that Feist will also share the stage. We’ve seen Broken Social Scene (with Feist) a few times, but it’ll be fun to see doing Feist’s solo songs.

As for Father John Misty, we’ve been watching him since Fleet Foxes and as J Tillman. We have to say that our favorite so far is his reinvention as Father John Misty. This should be a really fun and memorable Rock the Garden night.

The Quinn sisters Tegan and Sara is back on tour for their The Con X: Tour. A portion of the proceeds from this tour will help combat economic justice, health and representation for LGBTQ girls and women via their Tegan and Sara Foundation.

Most of their shows have been selling out (Austin and New York being some of the first ones to sell out), so be sure to grab a ticket now. If you’ve never seen the band, they put on a great show with emphasis on great vocal harmonies and very catchy songs. You can find out why the sisters have sold over 1 million albums sold, and garnered three Juno Awards and a Grammy nomination.

The first non-Minnesota band the play the newly opened Palace Theatre in St Paul will be Phantogram. We got a sneak peek at the venue in Dec 2016 and wrote, “Booked and operated by a collaboration of First Avenue and Jam Productions, the venue expects to host around fifty events annually, and will be used during the day by nearby McNally Smith College of Music as a learning tool for students to know box office, staging, and venue operations.”

Given that the Palace is nearly double the size of First Avenue, it would make sense that bands that consistently selling out First Avenue would turn to the Palace. With all the hype of the new venue, Phantogram also sold out the Sunday show.

Phantogram will also be bringing shoegaze alternative The Veldt on tour with them for a brief six-exclusive U.S. Mid West cities before the duo departs for their European tour. Expect Phantogram to return their appearances at Coachella.

What a great double-billing of a couple of great storytellers: Suzanne Vega and Duncan Sheik.

We previously caught Vega last year when she was touring in support of her excellent new album Tales From the Realm of the Queen of Pantacles. As wonderful as the new record sounds live, we still love the old hits, "Tom's Diner" and "Luka".

As for Grammy and Tony award-winning musician Duncan Sheik, his latest Legerdemain is available worldwide on Kobalt Music. To celebrate the release, Sheik is heading out on tour with Vega, performing selections from his diverse back catalogue surrounding the theme “Songs From New York City From Bleecker Street To Broadway.”

Vancouver-based duo Dear Rouge (Drew and Danielle McTaggart) will be stopping by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis this Sunday, in support of their debut studio album Black To Gold (Universal Music Canada). Since the record did incredibly well on the Canadian Alternative Rock charts, I've seen photos of their shows in their native country showing massive crowds... so you're in for a treat if you live in the U.S. Sometime at these shows, you may get some Canadians crossing the border to see their favorite band at a small venue.

Opening up the show will be Rah Rah. We previously caught the band with The Envy Corps at the Fine Line in 2012 and described them as a six-piece Canadian band who used violins and accordions.

Rah Rah's latest is Vessels, available now on Hidden Pony Records.

I was in the presence of legends last night. I go to a concert almost every night and it is rare that I get to say that.

Social Distortion is the reason half of the bands I obsess over are around. They are the godfathers, pioneers, and in my mind, legends. I never thought I'd be able to see them live. I mean come on, they are all old as dirt. That all changed last night when I finally got to cross them off of my bucket list.

Instead of being the oldest one there by ten years, I felt like the youngest one there by twenty. This tour was to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their self titled album. I'm 26. Need I say more about how young I was compared to majority of the crowd?

Usually, when there's an older crowd, the old people stand in the back of the venue and let the younger generation have their fun in the pit. Not last night. Last night was the first time I have ever seen old people moshing... and they were moshing hard.

There was this one guy who had to be in his mid-fifties just going at it in the pit. I couldn't take my eyes off of him. He was singing every single word of every single song. He was holding his own in what proved to be a pretty epic old school mosh pit. The best part? He had a smile on his face the whole time while the sweat was dripping down his face. He stayed in that pit until the bitter end.

The openers were fine. Drag the River and Nikki Lane both sounded fine and played good sets but I was too anxious for the main event.

Mike Ness, the singer of Social Distortion, looked and sounded exactly how I wanted him to. The only hint to Mike's age (other than him announcing that he is 53) was the fact that he had his guitar tech laying out the lyric sheets to every song on the floor in front of him. He sounded like he was still a twenty something in a good old fashioned punk rock band. He looked the same as all the live footage of him I used to watch growing up. He still has his signature snarl and stance, and a body full of tattoos. Obviously, he looked older but he seems to be holding up like a fine wine... getting better with time.

The music hasn't changed at all. It's still great rock n roll music with a bit of country and a bit of punk mixed in. It was about time for me to see some real guitar solos. I've been to so many "main stream" shows lately I had almost forgot how talented musicians can be. They didn't let me down. It was an hour and a half long set full of energy and great music.

Song after song, I was reminded of why Social Distortion is such an iconic band. After all of these years, they still sound amazing and look the part.

You're never too old for rock n roll.

We were really impressed with Go 96.3 FM's first Go Show #1 (featuring New Politics and Banks at Aria on Mar 2015). We were wondering how they can top that debut show... and they've completely done it by booking Target Field with this incredible band lineup.

We've previously seen covered most of these bands, but to see them all on one bill is simply unbelievable. The kicker? Nosebleed tickets are under $10 each, so you can bring all your friends (well, restricted to a 20-ticket maximum) and hang out in the green.

The free annual Irish Fair will start next Friday, August 7th and ending on Sunday, August 9th, at Harriet Island. Headliner for the first two nights will be Los Angeles' Young Dubliners.... currently touring in support of their latest album Nine. We previously caught Young Dubliners when they headlined the Irish Fair in 2010, so I'll be good to have them back in the Twin Cities.

NOTE: The Irish Fair fans should know that there is a $20 Kickoff Party event on Thursday, August 6th, featuring local Irish band Wild Colonial Bhoys.

Our new writer Langen will be seeing Social Distortion at First Avenue. Not to brag, but I saw Social D in 1992(?) in Fresno, California. They played a tiny club and changed the line in "Ball & Chain" from "county jail" to "Fresno County Jail" and got a huge roar from the audience.

Mike Ness and company are on tour at the moment because their debut self-titled album turned 25 in 2015 (originally released in 1990). Expect the punk band to play the entire album, plus throwing in some old favorites from Somewhere Between Heaven & Hell, etc.

Since the first Minneapolis Communion Clubnight started October 2013, it's only been scheduled at the Varsity Theater. Now with November coming up, they've decided to change venue to the Turf Club in St Paul.

I'm not sure why the venue change, possibly because since Turf Club is own by First Avenue, they may reach a broader audience - and also nearer to those who live in St Paul, Minnesota.

If you've never been to a Communion show, check out this November show featuring Mikhael Paskalev (Norwegian-Bulgarian singer, songwriter and guitarist from Ålesund), Count This Penny (duo Amanda and Allen Rigell from Madison, Wisconsin) and Peter Michael Miller (from We Are the Willows).

I have only seen We Are the Willows before, and I have described their singer, Peter Michael Miller as having a "weird feminine voice".
