A day of hazy rain, black ice and sleet, nothing was getting in the way of sold out Night Moves show at Turf Club in St. Paul. It’s the final show of 2019 for these Minnesota legends and they did not disappoint. Starting off a brilliant 14 song set with “Can You Really Find Me”, the title track of their release from June 28th on Domino Records. Sota's finest blends an easy listening 70/80s style of Little River Band and Christopher Cross.

Night Moves performed a well-balanced set after their 3rd release (Can You Really Find Me) playing around five tracks from every album. The crowd was involved the whole night raising their glasses, singing along, and dancing the night away. Lead singer John Pelant voice has transformed remarkably over the years. With a shoegazy UK influence, the vocals blew me away on “Waiting for the Symphony” and “Border on Border”. John's got the classic lead vocalist look with crazy range. He'll go from high pitch harmonies to belting out lengthy Verve/Oasis-esque choruses. Switching off from guitar and keys he impressed the crowd every minute with fellow high school friend/bassist Micky Alfano. The crowded roared near the end of the set screaming, “one more song” and were rewarded with two.

Was blessed to see these guys back in 2012, a few times at SXSW over the years, and they get better every time!!! This is easily a top 5 Minnesota band at the moment. For fans of Portugal the Man, The Music, any bad-ass Rock N Roll band!

You guys know we are big Soul Asylum fans. The band will be heading out on their Dead Letter Tour with Local H.

The last time we saw the band in June 2015, we mentioned, “The hits came fast and hard from Soul Asylum as tracks like “Black Gold” and “Just Like Anyone” got everyone moving around and singing along - it’s truly mind-blowing just how jam-packed with hit songs Soul Asylum’s catalogue is. The current line-up, which consists of Pirner, bassist Winston Roye, guitarist Justin Sharbono and Michael Bland on drums, have obvious chemistry which makes for some entertaining moments. Pirner enjoys hamming it up for the crowd, skidding across the stage on his knees and joking around with Bland: “Michael Bland likes it when my ass is hanging out of my pants.””

Show up early to check out Porcupine. Porcupine originally started by singer/guitarist Casey Virock, who was previously in Wisconsin’s Space Bike. Virock, teaming up with Hüsker Dü’s bassist Greg Norton, and drummer Ian Prince to created Porcupine.

We saw Porcupine in March 2019 and wrote, “Evolving forward from a late ‘80s/‘90s indie-rock sound of Swervedriver meets QOTSA, the trio is out in support of latest six-song record, What You’ve Heard Isn’t Real (on Dead Broke Rekerds/DC-Jam) and recent lead single, ‘Lifetime’. The teenage alienation of their version of Hüsker Dü’s ‘Standing by the Sea’ from the new record was originally penned by Norton’s ex-band mate, the late Grant Hart, and is a fitting tribute to his musical legacy. Even songs like 2011’s ‘Rooftops’ resonate further, with Norton providing an extra bump from his restless stage presence and formidable bass skills.”

With all my cards on the table, I have to let you know that Scottish band Belle & Sebastian is one of my favorite bands. Yes, I own all their records, own all their singles, and have seen the band every time they play in Minnesota (which you can count on one hand: 4 times).

I’m very excited to let you know that B&S is back in the area, they’ll be playing the Weesner Family Amphitheater at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley. That’s a bit of a drive (for me), but they’re worth it.

Let’s hope the band will play older/classic B&S songs, considering that their last release were three singles, collected into one How to Solve Our Human Problems compilation album (available on Matador Records). I have read that they’re recording a new album called Days of the Bagnold Summer, but I don’t think the band will be playing forthcoming songs.

Special guests Men I Trust will open. The all-girls band was previously in town with Wild Nothing in November 2018.

For the Minnesota show, it’s listed that Transmission’s DJ Jake Rudh will play music pre-show.

Parquet Courts will be headlining First Avenue (a one-off date extending from Pitchfork Festival?) this Thursday, July 18th.

Cate Le Bon, who is touring in support of her new Reward album (available on Mexican Summer) will open the show. We last saw Le Bon in May 2016 and mentioned, “It was an incredibly healthy turn out for the Los Angeles, by the way of Wales, Cate Le Bon. Words must have spread since her last appearance in Minneapolis, in January 2014... despite the fact that Cate Le Bon physically could not say the words ‘Minneapolis’. We saw Night Moves in January 2014 and wrote, “ Local band Night Moves, ably taking over the opening spot from the previously announced Night Beds, was literally feeling the Blues. For the duration of their 40 min set, the band members (guitarist/vocalist John Pelant, bassist Micky Alfano, and multi-instrumentalist Mark Ritsema , with drummer Jared Isabella) were literally bathed in muted blue stage lights, which was mood evocative of their easy-going, slightly psychedelic 70s album rock-vibed sound.”

Metal legends Slayer is headlining the Armory this Thursday, presented by 93x and Live Nation. Slayer are one of the Rushmore of metal, right up there with Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. The band announced that 2018 will be their “Farewell Tour”, and if you’ve never seen them live, this is your final chance to jump at the opportunity.

Originally booked at the smaller 7th Street Entry, Shilpa Ray’s show got upgraded to the much larger mainroom, where she’ll share the stage with local favorites Night Moves, Anonymous Choir, and Wellness. We saw Ray in Sep 2015 and wrote, “Opening the evening was Brooklyn resident Shilpa Ray and band, who previously toured with her own blues rock band, the Happy Hookers. After a 2013 EP, the band returned this year with full-length, Last Year’s Savage (Northern Spy Records) and dazzled with a 40 min. performance that channeled Natalie Merchant or Norah Jones with a dash of Patti Smith, fronting Alabama Shakes.”

I have mentioned before that it's not a great place to see music (because of the talkers....

“Can I get a witness?!” How about 10,000+ of them—

On one of the best weather weekends of the year thus far, thousands descended on the grounds of The Basilica of Saint Mary in downtown Minneapolis for the annual two-day Basilica Block Party. 

The festival began in 1995 as a fundraiser to help pay for the structural restoration of The Basilica and today, proceeds from the event benefit The Basilica Landmark, which preserves, restores, and advances it for all generations. In addition, a portion of all proceeds go to The Basilica’s St. Vincent de Paul outreach program, which provides services to those in need.

Ten acts were spread across three stages for each night- the Main Stage (sponsored by Great Clips) located in a back lot behind the building along the highway, a Church Stage (sponsored by Preferred One) out front, and a smaller local stage (sponsored by Star Tribune) .

Star Tribune Stage

Nick Jordan opened the local stage, named the area Best R&B singer last year by City Pages and who has his latest EP, Dividends, due out next month, with a release show set for the 7^th St Entry on August 4. Jordan has a polished sound that melds r&b, funk, soul, and house, and is compelling live.

Jaedyn James & The Hunger followed, a South Minneapolis sprawling 10-piece funk love soul group in its third year, and who released their debut, RAW, in 2016.

Night Moves is a stalwart on the local scene, having formed in 2009 and still headed by the duo of John Pelant and Micky Alfano. The group’s latest Pennied Days has also spawned an EP, Carl Sagan-The Pennied Days Sessions (Domino Records) with UK tour dates upcoming for the slow groove, cosmically twangy group.

Preferred One Stage

Cobi, a Grand Marais, MN native who was once in the Boston indie-pop band Gentleman Hall opened the day’s entertainment on this front stage, notable for sloped grassy areas, where fans could watch casually.  The bluesy singer released a buzzworthy single, ‘Don’t You Cry for Me’ last year, along with follow up, ‘Prophet Story’, ahead of a more full-length release and his loyal local fans gave his trio a warm reception. 

Andrew McMahon and the Wilderness has seemed to fully shed his past successes as frontman for Jack’s Mannequin and Something Corporate, gaining even greater acclaim in this latest musical venture.  The pianist had the crowd with him from his beginning hit, ’Fire Escape’ and is in support of sophmore effort, Zombies on Broadway (Vanguard Records), released in February.

The Shins were among the most anticipated acts to see of the weekend, and the Portland band didn’t disappoint with a ninety-minute set supporting Heartworms (Columbia Records) released in March, and their first in five years.  Playing just under half the new album, the band re-acquainted themselves with their audience, playing a diverse mix from their four other full-lengths as well, and any fears there were to some rust to shake off, (in terms of live performance) were quickly dismissed.

Great Clips Stage

The Roosevelts opened the main stage on a night that featured an Americana lineup as the Nashville-band played a short harmonic rock set with 70’s vocal influences, in support of 2016’s self-released The Greatest Thing You’ll Ever Learn and who returns to the area for an Aug. 5^th fundraising appearance in nearby Hastings.  

John Paul White (better known as formerly one-half of folk duo The Civil Wars) was next, White coming out first alone, commenting “If you’re wearing a suit, then you’re warm” in the late afternoon sun.  The singer and his band are out in support of last year’s Beulah (self-released on Single Lock Records via RED Distrib), an effort he said first had no intention of doing, though the songs were forcing their way out of him.

White’s quiet and mostly sad songs seemed a little out of place on a festival’s big outdoor stage next to a highway (“that’s a first”, he quipped), but for the patient and attentive, the dividends were abundant. Highlights included ‘Simple Song’ (about his grandfather and from a Southern Family compilation) and covers of ‘Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold)’ (by Dan Seals, but which he teased was by Luke Bryan) and his set-closing slow burn of ELO’s “Can't Get It Out of My Head’.

NEEDTOBREATHE is a South Carolina band we’ve covered several times in the last couple years, and continues to impress us live as they get bigger and more well known, in support of last year’s Hard Love (Atlantic Records), which is soon to reissue with even more content.  The Christian leaning rock band led by the Rinehart brothers (Bo and Bear) is best seen in their own full headlining set, but even in a truncated outdoor festival appearance, treats the show as if they were in a sold-out arena. 

Opening with ‘Good Night’ set the tone for a stomping good hour-long set and following with that ‘Feet, Don't Fail Me Now’ kept momentum in high gear.  The audience was more secular this night, though several still held hands on high, during many of their more spiritual songs.  The Rinehart’s middle two-song acoustic set made for a nice change, starting with ‘Something Beautiful’, the song successful enough to “get us out of a van and into a bus”. Finishing with the anthems, ‘The Outsiders’ and ‘Brother’, this was a band with enough poise and stage presence to easily headline the night.

BRANDI CARLILE remains such a musical fixture here, she considers it a second home (“it’s good to be back in my home-away-from-home!”, she exclaimed).  She and her Seattle-based band (featuring as always, twins Tim and Phil Hanseroth) is in support of her own latest, The Firewatcher’s Daughter (ATO Records) and Cover Stories (Legacy Recordings), a compilation of other artists covering songs from 2007’s The Story.  “We’ve all been together for such a long time, us and you, haven’t we?” she gushed, ever impressed by the positive outpouring from the local crowd during her ninety-minute set. 

‘Keep Your Heart Young’ was actually written in town by Tim Hanseroth and caused a sing-a-long, ‘Dreams’ took us back to her busking days at Pike Place Market, ‘The Mother’ was written with her young daughter in mind, and a Johnny Cash cover kept the crowd clapping along with fever (“you guys are taking years off my life”, Carlile expressed).

Though deviating slightly from the setlist, a couple of covers helped close the evening, including a sparse take on Led Zeppelin’s ‘Going to California’ to end the main set, and John Paul White coming back to help sing their cover of Tears for Fears’ ‘Mad World’, a subtle statement on the current world state of affairs and a low-key version that sounded part TFF/ part Gary Jules.

Show up early to see Grammy-winning (for “Best Metal Performance”) artist Ghost. This is the perfect pairing, as both bands are known for their showmanship and theatrics. We previously caught the band last year and noted, “Assuming a leader role immediately, Papa (Papa Emeritus III) had the crowd responding at will, swinging a thurible (the metal censer suspended from chains) back and forth to fill the room with sweet incense, and even brought a pair of “sisters of sin” on stage, to distribute communion to the faithful pushed up along the front barriers during ‘Body and Blood’ (though he warned the crowd against any “touching” beforehand).”

Local band Night Moves is playing their hometown gig at the 7th Street Entry this Wednesday. The band recently shared their video for ‘Carl Sagan’, taken from their new album Pennied Days (which came out in March 2016).

I have it on good authority that Ed Borrie, who I highly respect as the songwriter for S*M*A*S*H, absolutely loves the new record. Based on his recommendation, you should check out this upcoming show. If you’re not familiar with this NWONW punk band, listen to my interview with Ed.

We caught the band in 2014 and wrote, “For the duration of their 40 min set, the band members (guitarist/vocalist John Pelant, bassist Micky Alfano, and multi-instrumentalist Mark Ritsema , with drummer Jared Isabella) were literally bathed in muted blue stage lights, which was mood evocative of their easy-going, slightly psychedelic 70s album rock-vibed sound.”

New York’s The Pretty Reckless is currently on tour in support of Who You Selling For (Razor & Tie).

Opening the show will be Holy White Hounds, currently touring in support of their debut album Switchblade.

We previously caught the Iowa band in July 2016 and wrote, “Watching these guys play was hilarious. The banter between band members was electric and the banter between band was audience was perfect. Everyone got involved in the show whether they only knew the one hit song or other various songs from the lifespan of this band. The energy was electric and absolutely everything you would want from a concert of an up and coming band that is about to make their big break.”

Also, be sure to show up early to check out Them Evils. The trio (singer, guitarist Jordan Griffin, bassist Jake Massanari, and drummer David Delaney II) is currently on tour to promote their self-titled album (Cold Black Love Records).

Did you know that the St Paul's the Turf Club was remodeled? I believe they have expanded and added a restaurant area, so now you can dine and watch a concert. I am hoping they make the stage better or upgrade the sound....

Although this was listed as a Turf Club Grand Re-Opening, there was already a grand re-opening show on August 28th, which was described as "cleaner" and "better smelling". Let's just hope.

I suppose for the second grand re-opening Turf Club show is with Night Moves.

Michigan was in the house in Minneapolis Tuesday night. Okemos, Michigan-born rising quintet Lord Huron and local openers Night Moves (not named after Michigan-native Bob Seger’s song, but still…) played to a full house at First Avenue’s Mainroom on a chilly, snowy Tuesday night.

Local band Night Moves, ably taking over the opening spot from the previously announced Night Beds, was literally feeling the Blues.

For the duration of their 40 min set, the band members (guitarist/vocalist John Pelant, bassist Micky Alfano, and multi-instrumentalist Mark Ritsema , with drummer Jared Isabella) were literally bathed in muted blue stage lights, which was mood evocative of their easy-going, slightly psychedelic 70s album rock-vibed sound.

Still promoting their debut, Colored Emotions (Domino Records), the hometown band will always get a great reception locally, but showed their abilities to go beyond that with gritty performances of the title track, first single ‘Headlights’, and ‘Country Queen’.

Night Moves

The band has a cosmic/country sound that looks forward with a tip of the hat to the past with their somewhat irregular song structures, in a way that more veteran acts would wear their influences, and belies the fact that they’re just getting started as a band.

What a difference a year makes for LA-based, Michigan-bred solo project, now band, Lord Huron. The five-piece led by Ben Schneider – guitar/ vocals, along with Mark Barry – percussion/vocals, Miguel Briseño – bass/percussion, Tom Renaud – guitar/vocals and Karl Kerfoot – guitar/vocals, was on tour and in town in Oct. 2012, as the opening act for Night Moves at the 7th St Entry for their record release show. The critical acclaim and word-of-mouth on the band has grown exponentially since, resulting in a packed, near sold-out show for their 72 min. performance.

The indie-folk quintet is supporting their debut full-length, Lonesome Dreams (IAMSOUND) and brings a Mumford and Sons-like bombast and Vampire Weekend-esque rhythms, with a pinch of Paul Simon/Peter Gabriel worldbeat made for bigger rooms, to their own unique take on modern folk.

Schneider admits to being a visualist as well, evident in setting the stage for their experience with a five-paneled silhouetted landscape backdrop and in-nature sound effects between songs, like crickets chirping and the beginning thunder of a storm rolling in.

‘Ends of the Earth’, the album’s opener, also opened their live set, lush in scope, with Fleet Foxes-like harmonies and Schneider howling falsetto, a la Jim James. Both ‘The Man Who Lives Forever’ and ‘We Went Wild’ (from their Into the Sun EP) had a near-Caribbean vibe, laid back and percussion filled, which pleased the groovers and nodding heads in the audience.

Superdudes abroad in the wilderness

Schneider’s harmonica on the dreamy ‘The Ghost on the Shore’ perfectly captured the mood of the album cover art- a dusty horsebacked rider, alone on an open midnight prairie ride. ‘Until the Night Turns’ revved up the tempo, then was downshifted by the delicate ‘Lullaby’, with the xylophone-tinged ‘Time to Run’ ending the main set with an exclamation point.

The two-song encore began with the building ‘Brother’ and ended with the percussion-gone-wild ‘The Stranger’; every band member banging on drums, tambourines, sticks, and whatever else was available at the end, with drummer Barry unleashing like he’d been holding it in all night.

Both bands were short on conversation; instead, letting their music do the talking, which was more than all right with the near-capacity crowd. And, both acts showed the polish and musicianship of those more seasoned and established, making them both worth keeping an eye on for future projects.
