Seattle’s Naked Giants opened the show, playing some tracks from their debut album Sluff (New West Records). According to the trio (Grant Mullen, Henry LaVallee, and Gianni Aiello), “This is our fourth time playing in Minneapolis... let’s make it seven times by the end of the year!”
As Naked Giants, the “regular guys” band only played here once before this year (at the Turf Club in May 2018)... but they may be referring to playing as a backup band for other artists.
Playing at First Avenue for the first time, Grant Mullen asked if this was the room that Prince wrote “Purple Rain”? He said it was a big honor to be in the same room.
The band is still fairly new to the scene. We first heard about them making a SXSW debut in 2016 and cutting their teeth with constant touring in support of their EP R.I.P.. When they had time between touring, they did manage to go in the studios with producer Steve Fisk (Nirvana, Unwound, Soundgarden) to write and record their debut record Sluff.
Pulling double duties, Naked Giants would join Car Seat Headrest (Will Toledo) as part of his live band. We’ve only seen them once before at Rock the Garden 2017, but we were shocked and amazed by Toledo’s very strong fanbase. For such a young songwriter to command singalong from everyone gathered near the stage, it was very impressive.
It was pretty much the same scenario, those same fans (doubling or tripling the size now) were at Wednesday night’s show and they were singing along. They even mosh (what?) during some of the faster songs. The fans were all in their 20s, which isn’t a surprise, but it’s very different than the typical shows we usually attend.
Since this was the band’s headlining show, instead of an outdoor music festival, the band had more control over the mood - and especially how the show should be lit. Clearly some thoughts were in place, from the moody, dark, slow introduction of the band, to the chaotic flashes to some of their songs, like “Bodys”.
Toledo still appears relatively shy when he sings. You can tell these songs have deep emotional attachments to them, and feels weird hearing these very personal songs with the 1,500 other fans in the room.
Car Seat Headrest’s new re-recorded album Twin Fantasy is out now on Matador Records.
