Chastity Belt is back in town to support their new album I Used To Spend So Much Time Alone (Hardly Art) at the 7th Street Entry on Saturday, July 1st. We previously saw the all-girls band (Julia Shapiro, Gretchen Grimm, Lydia Lund, Annie Truscott) at Triple Rock Social Club in June 2015 and wrote, “Songs like ‘Drone’ and ‘IDC’ showcased some sophisticated guitar work as well as some snarky lyrical commentary. They were also often endearingly introduced by Truscott who would look over at Shapiro and Lund, grinning, and say something like, ‘This is a song about sluts. Cool sluts.’”

Swedish pop band Miike Snow is headlining First Avenue, kind of a side-gig from their current Phantogram shows.

The band was previously in town last year, July 2016, as part of the Go Fest show.

Miike Snow’s latest album iii, came out in 2016. It’s rare (and not to mention costly) for these bands from Europe to come over to the U.S. for touring, so make the effort to see them live. However, it’s really too bad that the band book the show on a July 4th weekend... where, at least locally, many fans will be at their cabins on a long 4-day getaway.

Show up early to check out Norway’s Klangstof and find out why the band was named Best Alternative Act at the Edison Awards in Holland (the Dutch equivalent of the GRAMMY Awards).

New Orleans’ alternative rock band Mutemath recently took over First Avenue’s mainroom in Minneapolis on Sunday night. Although it wasn’t listed as sold out, it sure felt like it was at maximum capacity. Fans as far as Texas and Michigan drove in to see their favorite band.

Paper Route

By the time opening band Paper Route took the stage, the dance floor was packed. The Nashville’s last Minneapolis appearance was on April 23, 2013, with Anberlin... so it’s been a good three years since the group was in town. We previously caught them in 2009, so it’s few and far between.

Since I last saw them, I may have complained about the dueling vocals of JT Daly and guitarist Andy Smith was hard for me to focus and hear what was being sung. Since 2010, Smith left the band, leaving JT as sole singer - and Paper Route reinvented themselves with new songs, including the hit “Better Life”, which was played midway in their set.

Before playing “Zhivago” (“a song about a doctor”), JT spotted a fan singing the lyrics to “You & I”. He had to take a moment and ask his name. It was James. You can tell that personally knowing their fan’s names meant a lot to the band.

Paper Route is currently touring and recording their upcoming album. It’s not exactly out yet, but they did preview the new single “Laugh About It” for us on their 45-min set.

As for Mutemath, they put on a very entertaining show. First the stage darkened and stage is filled with “starry” lights from the many LED lights. Singer Paul Meany emerged from a tall stage singing “Stratosphere”. That’s really a great entrance, as he’s later spending his time sitting down for the keyboard or using the keytar.

Setlist

Many of their songs were specially synced to the LED lights, which visually was a lot of fun to watch. Midway in their set, Meany told us that about ten years ago, when they first recorded their debut album, they were practically begging people to check them out at the Fine Line Music Café via MySpace. From the bottom of his heart, he thanked those fans (some of them were in the audience, of course), and noted that his proudest moment was when they were hit with a power outage - that fans took over singing his song! Even looking at their setlist (see photo), it shows a cartoon drawing of a Minnesota Viking football player. They have a bond with the city, and it shows.

Near the end of their set, they played a rather long instrumental after their hit single, “Reset”, and as they proceeded to playing “Typical”, a bed was brought out! It was placed over the crowd, and Meany ran and jumped on and ‘bed surf’ during the song. It was spectacular.

Of course, fans stuck around and chant for an encore... but it was a smart move to not follow on such a high note.

Remember that Mutemath’s 2015 sold-out tour? Now’s your chance to see them again at First Avenue this Sunday, April 3rd. This will be the proper Vitals tour, meaning that they’ll be playing plenty of tracks from their latest album.

Paper Route will open the show. The band previously opened up for Imagine Dragons and Passion Pit. Although their upcoming album isn’t out yet, the trio recently shared “Laugh About It” single. Singer JT Daly noted, “We like to work within the limitations that come with being far away from everything. It keeps us uncomfortable in a way that ends up being really inspiring.”

The last time we saw Paper Route, they opened for Copeland in 2009 at a really crowded all-ages show, and said “Paper Route are also from Nashville, Tennessee. The band consists of dueling vocals between J.T. Daly (keyboards) and Andy Smith (guitars).”

Montreal’s Sarah Neufeld (violinist and composer from Arcade Fire) will be playing in Minneapolis at Cedar Cultural Center on Sunday, April 3rd. She is touring in support of The Ridge, which came out February 26th on Paper Bag Records. When not touring with Arcade Fire, you can find her with Bell Orchestre and a new duo with saxophonist Colin Stetson.

The Rocket Summer (the solo-project of Bryce Avary) is currently on tour in support of his sixth studio album, Zoetic (Aviate Records). The record is “without a doubt, this is the most ambitious record I’ve ever done,” Avary said.

Philadelphia’s Restorations will be at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on Sunday, April 3rd. If you’re not familiar with the band, they formed after post-hardcore band Jena Berlin broke up.

Guests Creepoid (who previously appeared with Marriages in July 2015) and Ontario punk trio The Dirty Nil will open the show.

The Dirty Nil’s debut album Higher Power is out now on Dine Alone Records. The band will likely play “Wrestle Yü to Hüsker Dü” (check out the video on YouTube)... if you didn’t know, Hüsker Dü is from Minneapolis.

We're pretty excited to see brothers band The Cribs back in Minneapolis, the last time we saw them it was in 2012 at 7th Street Entry and 2008 at the Varsity Theater.

This time around, the trio (twins Gary and Ryan Jarman and their younger brother Ross Jarman) will be at the Turf Club in St Paul.

As we already previously mentioned, their latest album is called For All My Sisters and came out earlier this year in North America on Arts & Crafts.

Breakout U.K. band The Struts will be stopping by First Avenue this September 17th, in support of their hit Have You Heard EP (Interscope Records), with single "Could Have Been Me".

The single climbed to #7 at Modern Rock and #13 at Active Rock, with over two million plays on Spotify, hitting #1 on their viral chart.

Also by popular demand, The Struts have added more dates and upgraded to bigger venues after announcing their first stateside tour.

The Struts are Luke Spiller (lead vocals), Adam Slack (guitar), Jed Elliott (bass) and Gethin Davies (drums).

Groovin' the Moo 2012

It’s here again already? Groovin the Moo, our favourite regional touring festival is about to take off around Australia. After last year, we’re super excited to spend another day hanging out in downtown Maitland at one of the most easy going events of the year and again they’ve managed to get a pretty amazing set of bands to play.
