Mount Kimbie graced the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis on Monday night and they were phenomenal. That's saying a lot, especially given that they're mainly beat-driven electronic dance music. But they're not your garden variety electronic band and there wasn't one laptop on the stage doing most of the work, as can be the case with most electronic acts. Mount Kimbie is the collaboration of Kai Campos and Dominic Maker, two adorable and talented young men based in London who craft exquisite, intricate music.
They started the night off with their new song 'Lie Near', with Kai Campos emphatically playing the beat with drum sticks on his Roland SPD-SX sampling pad. Joining Campos and Maker was their touring drummer/multi-instrumentalist Tony Koos. He added extra layers to the already rich sounds the two produce together on their own. From the beginning of 'Lie Near', there was almost no dead sound for the rest of the evening; any open expanse was filled with spacey delights. Adding to the richness of the music was the screen of projected images behind them, with what looked to be personal photos taken on their travels around the world. The rapid-fire succession of photos and the stories/imagery contained within each one provided an interesting place for my mind to go every second or two.
'Carbonated', off 2010's 'Crooks and Lovers' was next, and got the crowd moving around quite a bit. Their jam 'Maybes' really put the night in high gear and there was no turning back. My favorite track off the freshly released 'Cold Spring Fault Less Youth' titled 'Blood and Form' was next, with its intense driving beat, and amazing build up of keen vocals over addictive keyboard lines that left me wanting more. They then played the first track off 'Cold Spring' called 'Home Recording'. With the simple drums beat and melodic keyboard loop, as well as the smooth guitar notes, Kai Campos' R&B style vocals slowed things down just a bit, right before they went into 'Before I Move Off'. This time, drummer Tony Koos abandoned his kit and instead picked up a bass guitar to join Kai Campos as he played the rhythmic guitar riff throughout the song, while Dom Maker meticulously triggered samples and kept the beat going.
The trippy, repetitive synth lines of 'Break Well' came in afterwards and soon erupted into the short-lived but full-fledged guitar laden riff. 'So Many Times, So Many Ways', an instrumental track off 'Cold Spring', featured Campos on bass. Despite sounding overly simple, it was a perfect precursor for the upcoming bombastic track (and an absolute personal favorite) 'Made to Stray'. They absolutely nailed it from the start, including an extremely drawn out intro to tease us while we waited for the vocals of both Campos and Maker to drop. The last song of the set was 'Field' off 'Crooks and Lovers' and also featured a long build up to the awesome ending of power chords over inventive beats. That was the end of their set, but with the persistence of the rabid fans wanting more, they came out and surprised the audience with what happens to be my very favorite track of theirs, 'Mayor'. It's an extremely smart and innovative dance song that makes me wish I was a DJ so I could play it live at a club and watch people go crazy. The cascading beats that build to an awesome synth-driven riff that is unmistakably catchy and couldn't have been a more perfect end to a perfect night.
