The Frames at First Ave (17 Apr 2007)

Just a little backstory on Glen Hansard, we first saw him with Ireland's The Frames in April 2007 (but, of course, most of us have seen Hansard in the 1991 film The Commitments).

Although the Frames is still around, they have been relatively inactive (let's face it: they pretty much broke up), mostly because the band's ex-bassist, John Carney, went on to directing film (notably for directing Once with starred Hansard and future/past love Markéta Irglová). As I've already mentioned, Once was my favorite musical that I've seen (at that time in 2007). The film was eventually re-made into a Broadway musical, which we wrote about, noting that "“Once” the Musical is so good, I’ll say it twice—See It! See It!"

Anyway, Hansard and Irglová continued as The Swell Season... but since the couple broke up, Hansard went on to release his solo album Rhythm and Repose in 2012. His latest Didn't He Ramble was produced by Thomas Bartlett (The National, Sufjan Stevens) and Grammy winner and former Frames band-mate David Odlum (Paloma Faith, Tinariwen). The album is available now on Anti- Records.

Aoife O'Donovan to open. We previously mentioned O'Donovan with The Lone Bellow in 2013. The American singer/songwriter is best known for fronting the progressive bluegrass/string band Crooked Still.

Seattle soul singer/songwriter Allen Stone will be stopping by the Varsity Theater on November 20th, in support of his new album Radius. The album is being re-released with bonus material in winter 2016 on ATO Records.

We previously caught Stone in October 2014, and described it as "a raucously entertaining set." Although he had a full band of two bassists, two keyboardists, two backup singers, and one drummer... this time, I am told he is bringing two additional horn players to his group, which should add a bit of funk to his sound!

So "Get Up and Dance" to why Stone is described by the NYT as "glimmers of Al Green, Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, George Clinton, Prince and a bit of Sting."

As of last month, Moon Taxi's single "Year Zero" is #34 on the AAA charts and receiving airplay across the US, including major FM stations such as: WXRV Boston, WRLT Nashville, KGSR Austin, KINK Portland, and WTTS Indianapolis. In support of their recently released album Daybreaker (BMG), the band is currently touring across the country.

Their new single "Run Right Back", Moon Taxi's guitarist Spencer Thomson said, "'Run Right Back' might have come together quicker than any other song on Daybreaker. Wes [Bailey] wrote the chorus lyrics and melody one evening and recorded it on his phone. Everyone in the band loved it when they heard it. It was obviously something we could all relate to - the idea of missing your loved ones while you are away and having the memories with that person to help keep you going. I had a daughter while we were in the middle of writing and preparing for the album. I wrote the verses at about 4am after she had woken up and I had held her back to sleep. I actually got a lot of good writing done in those moments. It was quiet, dark and there were no distractions. I think the song might be my favorite the band has ever recorded."

It used to be easy to keep up with Mark Kozelek. He’d release a record every couple years – either a solo album of covers or an album of original material with his band moniker Red House Painters or Sun Kil Moon. However, these days, it seems like a new Kozelek release is as frequent as a Miley Cyrus tongue shot. Last year, Kozelek released an 18-track album under the Sun Kil Moon moniker (Among the Leaves), and this year he’s released the cover album Like Rats, two live albums, the Mark Kozelek/Jimmy Lavalle collaboration album Perils from Under the Sea, and, most recently, he contributed vocals and bass to the latest album by ex-Red House Painters guitarist Phil Carney’s band Desertshore (entitled Mark Kozelek and Desertshore).

And, naturally, there’s a new Sun Kil Moon record on the horizon: Benji, which will be released on February 11, 2014 and can be pre-ordered from Caldo Verde. His recent live shows have included songs from the forthcoming album, as well as from his other recent releases, and even the odd Red House Painters tune tossed in for good measure. In any incarnation, a night spent with Kozelek’s deeply personal songs is always a bit like reading someone’s diary… if the diary came with lovely guitar plucking and a melodic voice.

The short American leg of Kozelek’s current world tour begins on December 19th at the intimate Lincoln Hall in Chicago.

Moon Taxi is an indieprog rock band based in Nashville, Tennessee. The band features singer/guitarist Trevor Terndrup, bassist Tommy Putnam, guitars/programmer Spencer Thomson, drummer Tyler Ritter, and keyboardist Wes Bailey. The band currently releases music under their 12th South Records label, with distribution via BMG.

Anyway, after appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman for "Running Wild" semi-recently, the Nashville band announced a six-track acoustic EP Acoustic on West 56th, coming out December 17th. The EP was recorded in New York City earlier this Summer. All acoustic version ("Running Wild", "The New Black", "Change", "River Water", "Young Journey", and "Suspicious") on the EP were taken from the band's album Mountains Beaches Cities, which was released on September 10th, 2013.

Snowbird is a duo (Stephanie Dosen and Simon Raymonde) with a new album called moon via Bella Union (the label that Raymonde has curated since his former band Cocteau Twins went their individual ways in 1997).

moon features a stellar various whos-who guests, such as Radiohead's Philip Selway (who I've interviewed for KFSR 90.7 in 1995) and guitarist Ed O’Brien, Midlake's Eric Pulido and drummer McKenzie Smith and Lanterns on the Lake's Paul Gregory, etc.

Although the guests are cool, Ryamonde emphasized that it's singer Stephanie Dosen that should be the spotlight, "Having them add their magic to the record was a thrill, but really, I think this is very much Stephanie's record. She's a really special singer and I feel the simplicity of my music was the perfect backdrop for her stories and her incredible vocal arrangements... Stephanie was the first singer I had worked with since Elizabeth [Fraser of Cocteau Twins] that I had a real musical empathy with. She could do anything..."

Look for moon in early 2014 on Bella Union.

Speaking of snow, Snowflake is the stagename for producer/mixer D. James Goodwin, his debut album We All Grow Around the Sea is coming out December 10th. In the meantime, you can hear "Black Stars" via The Big Takeover:



Snowflake's music is said to be sound like Mogwai (who, incidentally did a fantastic job providing the creepy music for the French television show "The Returned"), but with the size of Pink Floyd.

With the release of We All Grow Toward the Sea, expect Snowflake to do a tour in 2014.

Moon Duo announced their new album is called Circles and it's coming out October 2nd on Sacred Bones Records. They'll be on a full US and UK tour this year in support of the album.

The band is fairly new, having formed in 2009 and quickly releasing several EPs (Killing Time and Escape) before debuting their full length, Mazes, the following year.

With Circles, the music and themes were inspired from Ralph Waldo Emerson's 1841 essay by the same name.

The Soft Moon is releasing their second album, Zeroes, coming out October 30th via Captured Tracks.

The band is based out of San Francisco, fronted by Luis Vasquez. Their music is said to be influenced by Synthpunk.

While Soft Moon's early releases were primarily a solo project, their new album is said to incorporate a full band arrangement. That might be better reflected on a live performance… and speaking of which the band is out on tour to promote the new album.
