Musician, DJ, photographer, and businessman Moby can now add another title to his resume- that of author, and we caught his recent Minneapolis appearance at Magers & Quinn Booksellers to promote his just released, Porcelain: a Memoir (Penguin Press), doing a reading, Q+A, and meet and greet/signing with the fans.
Additionally, the local appearance was sponsored by The Herbivorous Butcher, America's first vegan butcher shop in NE Minneapolis founded by Aubry and Kale Walch, a brother/sister team from Guam. Creatively concocting meat-free meats and cheese-free cheeses, the pair brought delicious samples of meatless turkey and chicken sandwiches on a large six foot cutting board, for all to try, and is now working on fish-free fish varieties.
Detailing his very earliest days up through the release of landmark 1999 album Play, Moby pulls little punches in the book, detailing his drug use, alcoholism, devout then loss of religious faith, and being on the brink of complete disaster before the landmark album caught eventual success.
For the reading, dressed on a warm evening in a t-shirt, hoodie and sport coat, Moby selected two passages from his early days about DJ-ing in the late ‘80s in sketchy NYC venues and living (squatting really) in an abandoned warehouse, aspiring to make it on the club scene. The third and last passage read, was from near the end of the book, detailing being dropped by his label, battling with alcohol, and coming to terms that his career as a musician might be at its end.
The question and answer period covered a broad range of topics, with Moby often wishing he had a more exciting answer or story, than was actually the truth. He only ran into Prince once, dancing near each other in a NYC club in the late 80s, but had a true closeness to David Bowie, who was his neighbor when he lived in New York and Moby reminisced about playing ‘Heroes’ acoustically together at Bowie’s apartment, and briefly losing a special hat that Bowie had signed and given to him.
He revealed that he is, in fact, appearing (though not announced) at next month’s massive Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas …though isn’t related to politician Karl Rove (the result of a joke gone too far).
When asked about the divisive moment he was listening to music on the radio (which almost could do no wrong in his mind) and decided he could create music as worthy, the musician paused and finally said, “When I heard ‘We Built This City’” (a 1985 radio hit by Starship), he knew he could do better.
He mentioned his recent foray into acting with Patrick Stewart in Starz’ Blunt Talk, veganism and the Los Angeles restaurant he opened last year, maintaining his sobriety, and his absolute dislike of touring.
Always living relatively simply, he seems content to be not as relevant as a radio airplay artist as he was ten years ago, and is happy pursuing his personal passions, instead of greater fame.
Musically, Moby has teamed up with The Void Pacific Choir, with a recently released EP called Almost Loved on Mute Records and the book tour resumes next month.
