Going to a MC Chris show is like seeing a half comedy and half rapper show. The nerdcore rapper stopped by 7th Street Entry in support of his new record MC Chris is Dreaming.
MC Chris came on stage, having confessed that he was so nervous, he nearly threw up backstage. I don’t think he was kidding, the man has butterflies in his stomach and he sounded anxious and nervous. He asked if the openers were okay, then quickly answered himself, “Of course they were!”
MC Chris opened his show with ‘I Want Candy’, an original song, rapped over Bow Wow Wow’s catchy ‘I Want Candy’ guitar hooks. Then he introduced his next song as a song about pizza and butts.... ‘Pizza Butt’! This was our second favorite MC Chris song, when we wrote about it in 2008 when he released MC Chris is Dead.
After ‘Hoodie Ninja’, a song about masturbating ninjas in hoodies, he got nostalgic about his very first song he wrote called ‘The Tussin (Robotussin)’. It was nearly 20 years ago (“Some of you weren’t even born!” he remarked) when he was housesitting his brother’s home in Connecticut when he wrote it.
Although MC Chris confessed he will never be a millionaire, one thing is for sure, his fanbase is quite passionate and goes to all his shows and sings along to every song. They’ll buy his records, they’ll get it signed (standing in a single filed line, of course), and they absolutely adore what MC Chris had to say.... including 10 minute rants about Star Wars and those Tauntauns or talking about respecting women, etc.
Midset, MC Chris announced that he was doing a costume contest. Those who came prepared came on stage in their costumes. While, personally, I voted for Kitty Pryde and Lockheed, the winner was the Beetlejuice deceased couple. They won $500 from Neca Toys.
After ‘IG-88's '57 Chevy’ MC Chris heard that MC Lars was mad/upset from backstage. When he asked why, someone mentioned that Donald Trump was winning the election. MC Chris joked that sounded like a “harbinger of good news.”
With a partial couple of lines from Prince’s ‘When Doves Cry’, MC Chris launched into ‘MC Chris Is Dreaming’, taken from his new record.
The finale was ‘Fett's Vette’, which was previously requested by fans in the front showing him pictures of Boba Fett. Of course, he was always going to play that song, and clearly, based on people’s singing along, this was the crowd pleaser.
MC Chris is Dreaming is out now.

Opening up the show were Mega Ran and MC Lars... who actually had very similar style, but MC Lars being a little geekier. Highlight of MC Lars’ set featured Mega Ran and local Neil Olstad of Koo Koo Kanga Roo showing up on stage to sing and dance to ‘Nerdcore Died’.
