The thing about their 40-min set was that they played quite a few unheard, brand new songs, which they said was going to appear on their forthcoming third album. They previewed some tracks like "I've Got My Eyes On You" and set closer "Make It On Our Own" (I'm just guessing on these song titles - correct titles will be unveiled when the new record comes out).
Sandwiched between the new materials were old fan favorites like "Rio" (featuring plenty of handclapping from the audience) and "Calabasas" (featuring plenty of sing-along).

They seem really down to earth, and embarrassingly strange and funny sometime when Brooke would just shout out "Happy Canada Day!" and then proceeding to tell us, "I don't mean to brag, but we have a Canadian on stage [referring to their bassist]... and I don't mean to double brag, but I lived there longer than him!"
For the Turf Club show, the band decided to attempt a brand new song, which they've never played before... and realized it may not have been such a hot idea as it was a packed house. After playing the dirty history/when you were mine song, they asked how it was from a scale of one to ten (with plenty of "10"s from the audience... except for that beer guy who could only manage to hold eight of his fingers up).
For "Sad To See You Go", Brit actually forgot to bring her recorder, so the band was forced to whistle the intro. The cellist couldn't complete her part and instead just laughed.
Highlight of their 40-min set was the "I'm your Bonnie, you're my Clyde" song called "Top Of The World (F***ing Close)", which Brooke had to stress that it was "about love." She told us that after they played it to their father, he said instantly said that song was about sex... which Brooke made a yuck face and said, "That's gross, Dad!"
Their "angsty one" song "We Did It Right" was played next, which they dedicated to the marriage equality bill that recently passed.
Mates of State's drummer/singer Jason Hammel's very big family (parents, cousins, sisters, grandparents, uncles, etc.) had shown up to show support on Wednesday. Hammel mentioned several times during their hour plus set, even dedicating "My Only Offer" to his grandfather/mother in the audience.
Although there were plenty of Hammel families, there were also a large amount of fans who came out to hear some classic songs, as the duo had not been in Minneapolis since 2011, when they were touring for Mountaintops.
Songs on their set were a good mix of best-known songs, such as "Palomino", "The Re-Arranger", and "Now" (which had the audience doing fancy footwork dancing).
New song "Sides of Boxes" had Hammel switched to keyboard and took over vocals... Kori Gardner sang and stood behind her keyboard for all the songs - except for the set closer, "Beautiful Kids", when she switched to drums.
The triple song encore started with "Like U Crazy" (a favorite from 2006's Bring It Back), followed by "Someone Like You" and one lone Daniel Johnston cover song "True Love Will Find You in the End". The latter was previously covered by Hey Marseilles for their 2012 Valentine Day single.
Mates of State's You're Going to Make It is out now on Barsuk Records.
