Daniel’s voice and guitar work moved from elegance to fierceness almost on a coin-flip, and the songs on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga received the most enthusiastic response.

This is the Chicago Twin Peaks band... I wonder if they will get sued once Showtime start their David Lynch and Mark Frost's Twin Peaks production in 2016?
...
Fans are Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga about Spoon coming back to town... The popular band sold out a double night at the Palace Theatre this upcoming week: September 15-16.
Spoon's Hot Thoughts album came out in March on Matador Records.
Also worth noting is that Merge Records will be re-releasing a remastered Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga as a special double vinyl and album (with bonus CD & EP). The reissue will be in stores on October 20th... and if you get it from the Merge store, it comes bundled with a T-Shirt.
Chicago’s Twin Peaks (nothing to do with David Lynch weird television show) will open.

The first time I was meant to see Widowspeak, it was supposed to be in June 2012... but their van broke down driving from Chicago to Minneapolis. I eventually caught the Brooklyn band as headliner at the 7th Street in October of that year.
Widowspeak’s new album Expect the Best is out now and they are very proud of the new record... and they are very excited to play these new tracks on this 2017 tour (which starts tomorrow!)

We caught Dan Croll in November 2016 and noted, “UK folktronic singer-songwriter Dan Croll (who is one to watch as well) opened the evening with a criminally short but enjoyable thirty-five minute set of songs from his 2014 full length Sweet Disarray (Deram Records/Universal) as well as some new music set to appear on his next album.”
That “next album” is called Emerging Adulthood and it’s out now on Communion Group Ltd. Croll is touring in support of the new album and will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul this Saturday.

Supergroup The New Pornographers (featuring A.C. Newman, Blaine Thurier, Dan Bejar, John Collins, Kathryn Calder, Kurt Dahle, Neko Case and Todd Fancey) are on tour in support of Brill Bruisers, out now on Matador Records. .…
Opening up for the show is one of our favorite bands, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. We've been loving this band since 2007.
…
Now this was a novel way to experience a concert—
Canadian indie super group (of sorts) New Pornographers came to town, along with openers The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and insisted that the venue put signs everywhere warning that any photography or video (from cell phones or otherwise) could result in expulsion from the sold-out show.
The respectful and somewhat older crowd mostly obliged and actually watched, listened, and enjoyed what was coming from the stage. Instead of being nose-down in social media postings, watching the show through a 4” phone screen, or shamelessly selfie-taking, the audience paid attention—what a concept!
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
The evening began with a 40 min. set from NYC five-piece, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, who W♥M has followed for several years, covering gigs in the smaller clubs they’ve played in town. Singer Kip Berman was clearly excited to be playing the larger room, and it was with a slightly different lineup as keyboardist Peggy Wang has left and Jess Weiss from Fear of Men, was sitting in due to Drew Citron involved with his other band, Beverly.
The group is out in support of their latest, Days of Abandon (Yebo Music) and showed the Minneapolis crowd, maybe their most mature sounding local performance to date, playing half the new album’s songs, which skew quieter and less raucous, though best received predictably were the older songs, like the driving ‘Young Adult Friction’ from 2009.
Berman and band didn’t say much, save towards the end, when he played hype man for the headliner, remarking “New Pornographers are going come out and blow your mind!” A crowd member shouted back, “You just did!” only to have Berman retort, “well…I hope you have two minds then!”.
Ending with their namesake song, and its crunching chorus “No, we will never die”, The Pains seemed right at home in the bigger room and we hope to see them back there, in a headlining role soon.
New Pornographers
After a brief intermission, the screen covering the main stage rose, and all eight members of New Pornographers took to the stage to rave applause, starting their set with the harmony laden title track from just-released album, Brill Bruisers (Matador Records); the song itself is homage to the classic Brill Building where so many great records were made.
The night began positively and upbeat showcasing an album singer AC Newman describes as a “celebration record” and proved to be the perfect prescription to come in out of the cold for.
Singer Neko Case, who dressed in a gray t-shirt and Cleopatra-print leggings (which were all the talk after, on social media) and Newman both commented before the jumpy new ‘Dancehall Domine’, “we’ve had a lot of cupcakes, so we’re bouncing’ off the walls”, to the crowd’s chagrin.
Case, Newman, keyboardist Kathryn Calder (dressed in a black/white geometric top) and Dan Bejar all traded the lead vocal spot, in an overall well-paced 100 min. set. Early technical issues were quickly overcome (maybe a result of the cupcakes?) and the band was quickly back on track with new album’s second single, the Cars-sounding electronic, ‘War on the East Coast’.
Bejar would sing a song then disappear, to eventually re-appear, coffee mug in hand, for another song, each like a gift to an audience eager to hear his distinctive voice. The vocal interplay between Case and Newman was particularly spellbinding, especially their trading of verses on mid-set’s ‘Adventures in Solitude’.
“This is really an amazing place to always come to… we know it’s always going to be awesome” Newman mentioned before ‘Testament to Youth in Verse’, gathering some local love, but also refused to mention another dubious city where things maybe weren’t so golden for the group.
After ending the main set with ‘Mass Romantic’ from their 2000 debut album, things got especially lively with the two encores. Older songs, 'Challengers’, ‘Moves’ and ‘The Bleeding Heart Show’ had people singing along and head nodding in place.
For the second encore, an audience chant of “Dan, Dan, Dan” brought back out Bejar, for an unplanned ‘Execution Day’, with perfect harmonies reminiscent of the best Crosby Stills and Nash songs, and Newman remarking after, “that was sort of…unexpected- you’ve got to guilt him in doing that”.
2005’s ‘Sing Me Spanish Techno’ ended the evening on a bouncy high note, with the band visibly happy to have played, and an appreciative audience actually paying attention and loving it—what a concept!
New Pornographers at First Avenue, Minneapolis (12 Nov 2014)
See that photo of Stuart Murdoch? That is a photo that you can only get if you happen to be Robin ... dancing on stage with Belle and Sebastian at the sold out Theatre at Ace Hotel show in Los Angeles. …
We've been very excited about news of the new Belle & Sebastian 2015 album for a while now, but the band recently made things official: It is called Girls in Peacetime Want To Dance and will be arriving January 20, 2015, via Matador Records.
With the recent "It Could Have Been A Brilliant Career" vinyl re-issues, it made sense that the band will also offer Girls in Peacetime Want To Dance as a double LP vinyl (and also available as a 4x LP vinyl boxset). Wealthy fans will love the deluxe package, poor fans will surely be jealous.
I own all the B&S albums on CD and will likely just pick up the Compact Disc for my collection.

The Belle Brigade is currently supporting Ray LaMontagne on a full US tour.
Their latest release Just Because (ATO Records) has been a huge success and has plenty of hits to egg everyone hooked this year! Very reminiscent of Family of the Year; Belle Brigade is a family band with male and female vocals dueling for a sound of perfection.

A Friend Too Long is the new album from Michigan indie roots band Lac La Belle (translate to "Beautiful Lake").
The album came out in early October 9th, via Double Lot Records.
The duo, songwriters Jennie Knaggs & Nick Schillace, set the album in a contemporary context framed by life in Detroit. “Detroit represents our modern time in all its beautiful, ugly, and naked realities,” says Schillace. “There is a spectrum of struggles here…and an equal opportunity to find material that is both universal and personal with a timelessness that helps connect us to a continuity of human experience.”

Stephen Malkmus (former Pavement singer) and his band, the Jicks, will be stopping by the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis in support of his latest album Wig Out at Jagbags. …
"I gotta do what I gotta do," exclaimed Stephen Malkmus at last night's Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. Malkmus, and his band, The Jicks, are currently out on tour in support of their latest album Wig Out at Jagbags, out now on Matador Records.
Tyvek
Opening up the show was Tyvek from Detroit, Michigan. The punk/rock band has the spirit and vibe of Pavement's DIY sound, and you can easily see why Stephen Malkmus asked the band to be the opener.
Tyvek did about ten songs, such as "Midwest Basement" and "Air Conditioner". Tyvek's latest album is called On Triple Beams, and their last show with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks will be tonight in Wisconsin.
The Cedar was already full of people when Tyvek was playing, but when they stepped off the stage, you can feel everybody started to get closer to the stage. Surprisingly a very full show for a Tuesday evening, and Malkmus would comment on this several time in his set, "Thanks a million for coming out! Thanks a million!"
When the band came on stage, they immediately noticed the two youngsters in front of the stage (they were probably brothers, between 10 and 14). Guitarist Joanna Bolme immediately said, "I was five when my parents took me to see the Who." Which Malkmus deadpanned replied, "We're not exactly the same caliber..."
The Cedar is one of my favorite venue in Minneapolis (and I've been to most of them), but, as Malkmus mentioned on stage, it wasn't a good fit for their brand of "hard" rock. To me, Malkmus may be more comfortable in a dive bar, like the 7th Street Entry... but, based on the turnout of last night's show, that they've clearly outgrown that venue.
I wasn't expecting Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks to play any Pavement songs, but I was sure hoping he would (I'm not the only one hoping, everybody in the audience were expressing the same thing). Instead, I believe only two Pavement songs were played ("Father to a Sister of Thought" and "Harness Your Hopes", the latter was per request by Lisa in the audience).
Setlist Photo
As you can see from the setlist, the majority of it was dedicated to their latest Matador album Wig Out at Jagbags ("Lariat", "Planetary Motion", "Cinnamon and Lesbians", "J Smoov", "The Janitor Revealed", "Shibboleth", "Houston Hades", "Surreal Teenagers", "Rumble At The Rainbo") as well as their previous album Mirror Traffic (including "Tigers", the 'blowjob song' "Senator", "Spazz", etc). Hearing the new songs, they do sound like the typical unconventional "pop" songs you have come to expect from a Stephen Malkmus song. You know, weird music chord changes, falsetto-to-normal singing vocals, etc.
The highlight of their show is at the encore, where the band was really loose on play style and also more incline to go off the setlist and take in requests. Malkmus asks, "What would you like to hear? 'Karma Chameleon'*? 'Wonderwall'? 'Rock 'n Roll Star'?" (which he then sang a weird/non-Oasis version in off key). I believe he was only joking, I don't think they had any intention of playing those songs. But the rest of the encore was basically improv hour... even when Malkmus left the stage, Jake & Mike started singing a Foreigner song, "Hot Blooded", so they all were having fun.
Wig Out at Jagbags is out now on Matador Records, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks are currently on tour in support of the album. If you want to check out that album live, there's no better time to catch them on the road. If you were hoping for some really random cover songs, do yourself a favor and stay until the very end. You never know what they are going to play.
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks at the Cedar Cultural Center, Minneapolis (02/18/14)
* PS, this was probably inspired by the fact that they were playing the Cedar 'Cultural' Center (the big hit song "Karma Chameleon" was by Culture Club). I just got the impression that Malkmus was not impressed with the Cedar, because he seemingly made fun of the fact that the venue catered to 'World Music'. Malkmus said, and I quote, "The sound? Not so good."
One of my very first real concerts I went to was Pavement at the Cadillac Club in Fresno, California, on 09/16/1994. I sure wish I had the ticket stub or flyer, but I distinctively remember this show because Pavement's drummer Bob …

Forty Bells
Hearts and Plugs
Charleston, SC new indie-rock band Brave Baby tops the bill, in support of their debut, Forty Bells (Hearts & Plugs) with a sound some have described as a happier, Youngblood Hawke-esque Arcade Fire.
Nashville-based folk, soul, blues, pop husband/wife duo Johnnyswim has been getting the most buzz of the lineup, currently all over VH-1 and in support of their latest EP, Heart Beats (Big Picnic Records).

FEBRUARY 19: 7TH STREET ENTRY Incan Abraham w/ Van Stee

Jess, who saw them last year, wrote, "For those unfamiliar with [Incan Abraham], their sound could be categorized with the likes of Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear and High Highs... music that goes hand in hand with the strive to be an enlightened being. "
Incan Abraham will be stopping by the 7th Street Entry on Wednesday. Local band Van Stee (consisting of Charlie Van Stee and Josh Kaplan from the disbanded The CVS Trio) is set to open the show. After wowing the Minneapolis crowd with an October show at the 7th St. Entry, the band returns to the bigger Cedar Cultural Center this week, supporting their bouncy debut, Wildewoman (Mom + Pop Music).
Co-founders/lead vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig dress, look, and sing in unison, backed by three multi-instrumentalists.
Expect a healthy dose of infectious, dance-inducing pop songs and a good excuse to shake your hips to warm up on a chilly winter night. Time Magazine dubbed them “a band to watch” and hopefully you took note, as the Minneapolis date is long sold out.
Boston-based duo You Won’t, open the show with their own blend of melodic, theatric folk, supporting their debut, Skeptic Goodbye (Old Flame Records).

FEBRUARY 21: 7TH STREET ENTRY Together Pangea w/ Mozes And The Firstborn
We actually wrote about the tagteam of Together Pangea and Mozes and the Firstborn yesterday, so I won't spend too much time re-introducing them.
What I didn't mention was that the Minneapolis show will feature a third local act, Frankie Teardrop, who likes to "make rock and roll jams." Teardrop doesn't take himself seriously and promote bad reviews like, "comically terrible" or "what a joke". Sounds like it's going to be fun. Teardrop will likely play tracks from his latest Tough Guy album (which came out last October).

Carrie Rodriguez's last date on a very long National tour for her latest album, Give Me All You Got was at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis last night, April 14th. .…
FEBRUARY 23: CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER Carrie Rodriguez w/ Frankie Lee
Since no one I know can afford the Paul Simon and Sting concert at Xcel Energy Center, how about checking out Carrie Rodriguez at the Cedar Cultural Center this Sunday instead?
We caught Rodriguez last year at the same venue, and noted that Romantica's Luke Jacobs was there to help her sing and play... as it turns out, the two of them have a new live album called Live at the Cactus.
Expect Rodriguez and Jacobs to play some country-ish folk tunes. Opening up is local alt-country Frankie Lee, not to be confused with the 70s bluesman of the same name.

I previously mentioned Toronto's Austra, that Tasseomancy are part of Austra's touring band. I got a note that their new video for 2012 is for their song "Spellwork" …
Principal songwriter/vocalist Katie Stelmanis talk about the band's music, "We are really into dense harmonies and big beautiful melodies, but I also love techno and dance music. I wanted to bring those elements together."
Opening up for Austra for August and September will be Diana, who we saw as opener for Tegan & Sara.
