Blue eyes pop/blues singer ZZ Ward recently played a double show in "Dirty Minneapolis" at First Avenue on September 25 and 26th. The Friday show was sold out, but you can catch the broadcast via Yahoo Live.

The Young Wild

First of the three bands was The Young Wild with a 30 minute set. The last time we mentioned the band, we said they were a trio (guitarist/singer Bryan B William, bassist Gareth Moore, and drummer Brandon Zedaker)... but seeing them live, apparently they added a fourth band member called Vanessa Nelson as vocalist.

According to the band, this was only their second night on tour, but they were really excited to be on a national tour with ZZ Ward (especially playing at the historical First Avenue).

As expected with a brand new band, they only had a handful of songs to preview for us - including a brand new song they called "Not a One" (which sounded like they said "901" when I first heard it announced). The new single is available for purchase via Fairfax Recordings.

Marc Scibilia

Marc Scibilia was up next, wearing a white Kellogg's t-shirt, launched into a high energy version of "Wide Open Arms". We previously caught the young singer/songwriter with Butch Walker in 2013 when he was touring with only one other guitarist. He mentioned that he would like to come back with a full band, and as promised, this time around, he's joined by a three piece backing band.

Scibilia moved back and forth from piano to guitar throughout his 40-minute set, which included some songs from his forthcoming Out of Style album and a cover of The Weeknd's "Can't Feel My Face". For the finale, ZZ Ward's guitarist joined in on "How Bad We Need Each Other."

ZZ Ward has a very strong following in Minneapolis, often selling out every time she played here (thanks to local radio station Cities 97). I have criticized that in the three years that she played in Minneapolis (First Avenue (22 March 2014), Skyway Theatre (12 October 2013), Basilica Block Party (12 July 2013), Varsity Theater (22 February 2013), and Nether Bar (16 September 2012)), that she was basically playing the same songs from her debut album Til the Casket Drops (Hollywood Records).

This 2015 Love and War Tour is the first time that ZZ Ward is previewing some of her new songs from her forthcoming 2016 album This Means War ("Lonely", "Ride or Die", "Rescue Me"). Based on the strong response for "Love 3x" from the recently released Love and War EP, she has a big hit on her hands.

Dressed in a 'love and war' look of a red dress with black hat and belt and gladiator-type heels, ZZ Ward's 80 minute set consisted of part street, part blues, part rock sound.

As with previous ZZ Ward shows, she can be seen playing the harmonica, which she pulled out for "If I Could Be Her" and "Chains", a dark cover of the Nick Jonas song.

Highlight of the show was for the double song encore, starting with the classic singalong "365 Days" on piano. For the second song, "Love 3X", ZZ Ward performed in the crowd... making for a very satisfying ending, especially when the audience is singing back "Love! Love! Love!".

How generous is rocker Butch Walker to his diehard fans? Enough to give up the stage for his biggest radio hit, and let an audience member instead sing it to the crowd. More on that in a moment…

The Georgia based performer (known more recently for his writing/producing stints for Avril LaVigne, Pink, and others) brought the spirit and passion his longtime fans have come to expect, for a 100 min. performance Friday night at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis.

MARC SCIBILIA

Newcomer Marc Scibilia opened on this night with a stripped down but solid set of soulful folk rock, many culled from his latest third EP, The Shape I’m In (Hickory Records/Sony/ATV). Accompanied by just one other guitarist, the affable Scibilia endeared himself to the crowd with songs like the EP’s title track, ‘How Bad We Need Each Other’ and ‘Something Good in this World’ (both of which were featured in Fox TV’s Bones).

Scibilia, a Buffalo native now based in Nashville, also charmed with his stories of lamenting his first glimpses of snow seen for the season on the drive in to the venue, and about his supporting mother attending many of his recent shows, though cheekily mentioning it might be more to see Butch Walker, rather than her own son. Keep an eye out, as Scibilia hopes to return soon with full band, which includes his brother on drums.

After a brief intermission, Walker emerged in front of a piano on a dimly lit stage. Illuminated only by a small makeshift lamp, fashioned from a Jameson Whiskey bottle, Walker quietly played the first two solo numbers there, followed by another two on solo guitar, including the sing-a-long, ‘Mixtape’ .

“Let’s keep going back in the wayback machine… but you know there’s a catch”, Walker mentioned as the first chords of Marvelous 3’s ‘Freak of the Week’ began and he asked for a volunteer to commandeer the song in his place. “This is the only guy I saw pointing at himself”, Walker said, bringing up local aspiring singer Joshua Logan for a houserocking performance that had the crowd singing the chorus back to everyone on stage.

Walker remembered his recently deceased father (“Big Butch”) in a moving tribute that had him momentarily choked up for the intro to ‘Let It Go Where It’s Supposed To’. He knows his musical history too, evidenced by a seamless melding of Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ ‘Come on Eileen’ with his own ‘Synthesizers’ and Steve Miller’s ‘The Joker’ into his ‘She Likes Hair Bands’. Both were well received by the crowd that had an odd dichotomy: - most were devoted fans that knew many of the lyrics, yet were also half-drunk, restless, and chatty for most of the evening, which amounted to a strange combination.

For the encore, ‘3 Kids from Brooklyn’ started with a slinky slide guitar intro, channeling Zeppelin’s ‘In My Time of Dying’, that had Walker making his way through crowd to climb onto the back bar and request a shot. Upon his return to the stage, he paused, had everyone creep low, to then explode into a jumping mass of waving and dancing humanity. Final song, ‘Hot Girls in a Good Mood’ was punctuated by a balloon drop and snow machine blast…like Minnesotans need to see any more of that this early in the season!

“I'll know wherever you are, that's my home”, Walker sings on the title track of his highly personal latest release, the digital EP/ltd. CD, Peachtree Battle (Dangerbird Records), and as proven by his versatile performance this night, the road seems a very comfortable home for him.

Regular touring favorite Butch Walker returns to the road, including a stop this week at Minneapolis’ Varsity Theater. The native Georgian is still riding high from the release of his last full-length with band the Black Widows, 2011’s The Spade (Dangerbird Records) and has just released a digital ep, Peachtree Battle (Dangerbird Records). Though he’s made more of a name recently songwriting and producing for other acts (Avril LaVigne, Fall Out Boy, Pink among others), his own music is a roots rock breath of fresh air and expect a sampling from all facets of his career, including previous band Marvelous 3’s hit single “Freak of the Week”, though you might want to brush up on those lyrics yourself, in case you’re called up on stage to help vocalize.

Opening for Walker is new Nashville-based singer-songwriter Marc Scibilia, who has recently released his third EP, The Shape I’m In (Hickory Records/Sony/ATV). After touring stints with Ben Rector, Sixpence the Richer, and The Neighbors, Scibilia has garnered a core audience, had songs featured in TV series like Bones, and a growing following for his honest lyrics and heartfelt melodies. Arrive early to catch this up-and-comer so you can say you saw him ‘when’.
