Poptone (not to be confused with Alan McGee’s record label Poptones) headlined First Avenue’s mainroom on Saturday, July 8th.
Local DJ Jake Rudh played music videos in-between live sets. The videos are typical Transmission-type music. The music selections had plenty of David Bowie (Rudh has been on a Bowie-kick since his death), T-Rex, and anything from the glam period. We were a little surprise to see a rare American band like Concrete Blonde (the gothic-looking ‘Bloodletting’ video) on the playlist though.
New Orleans’ Trance Farmers, previously unannounced on the bill, opened up the show. They are normally a full six-piece band, but for this tour they were singer/band leader Dayve Samek and a singer & tambourine player. Musically, they gave off a hippy-vibe, as they play tracks from their record Dixie Crystals (Leaving Records).
Since they didn’t have a full band, Samek would often play pre-recorded backing track and he’ll synchronize his guitar notes... sometime creating really complicated layers of music.
Look for Trance Farmers’ forthcoming album, Sugar Lemon Hog Whistle, on Leaving Records. Their lead single ‘Teleportal’ is trippy, with its 70s guitars, with harmonica, and a weird pronounced in the song as “te-le-por-taal”.
Poptone took the stage a little later than advertised. The trio consists of Daniel Ash, Kevin Haskins, and Diva Dompé (Haskins’ daughter). The former two were previously in Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, and Love & Rockets.
Since those bands no longer exist, the newly formed band, decidedly play a bit of a retrospective setlist, featuring plenty of Tones on Tail songs, a bit of Love & Rockets songs, and throwing in a few Daniel Ash solo songs. While some people considers these cover songs, we don’t think so, considering Ash & Haskins help wrote these classic songs.
However, for those critics, the band have noted that they are indeed writing new songs, but those songs probably won’t be heard until after this tour. When asked why they were playing so much Tones On Tail songs, drummer Haskins said, “I feel that there are many people who didn’t get a chance to see us back in the day.”
Daniel Ash, in a mohawk and sunglasses, stayed mostly on guitars... except to bring out the saxophone for some special Tones On Tail songs. Meanwhile, Diva Dompé was playing all sort of instruments, showcasing her diverse talent.
For the truly faithful, who stayed for the double encore, they were rewarded with a rare Bauhaus song, ‘Slice of Life’. This was a deep cut from their 1983 record Burning from the Inside.
Surprisingly, Love & Rockets’ biggest hit song ‘So Alive’ was not played... instead ‘Sweet F.A.’ closed out their show.
