Here’s a little secret-- Little Green Cars are being driven by minors. As lead Stevie Appleby (vocals/ guitar) put it mid-way into their 60 min. set, “we’d love to join you drinking, but with these black ‘X’s’ on our hands…”
…
Ahead of their tour-ending final North American stop at the Cedar Cultural Center, Dublin alt/indie-folk band Little Green Cars stopped in to local record store The Electric Fetus, to perform a gentle but arresting twenty-minute set followed by a meet and greet, in support of second full-length album, Ephemera (on Glassnote/Island Records).
Little Green Cars
Adam O'Regan, Stevie Appleby, Faye O'Rourke, Donagh Seaver O'Leary and Dylan Lynch played an enjoyable four-song acoustic set, though were also looking forward to returning home to Ireland for a brief break, before beginning a European summer tour.
Without fanfare or even proper intro, the band began with ‘Brother’, armed with only acoustic guitars, handheld percussion, and small keyboard. ‘You vs. Me’ brought tall and usually shy singer Stevie Appleby to the forefront, supported by the band’s pitch-perfect harmonies and gentle finger-plucking.
“We have a new record out, and I wrote a poem about it” Appleby said next, mentioning that “Ephemera means all things must pass” as he summed up the album’s vision and its place amongst all the other musical works in the marketplace.
“Today is actually the last day of our seven-week tour… we’re gonna make you smell us now” Appleby joked as the quintet moved away from the amplification and speakers and stepped forward, to finish their set off-mic and as close to the gathered crowd as possible.
‘The Factory’ proved a proper set closer, it’s gospel-tinged chorus of “Jesus, Mary, Mother of God, I’m alive again” ideally suited to their well-honed harmonies, perfected from rehearsals and countless hours in tour vans, practicing acapella.
The W.B. Yeats poem of the same name that inspired the new album reflects its themes of transitory enjoyment and random items of short-lived importance in its lines, “Before us lies eternity; our souls are love, and a continual farewell.”
With an endearing free acoustic set, Little Green Cars provided the apt farewell to North America... until the next time.

LITTLE GREEN CARS / JOHN MARK NELSON
at Cedar Cultural Center
Saturday, 05/07/16, 8pm ($20) thecedar.org
Dublin’s Little Green will be ending their 2016 USA tour at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis - co-headlining with local John Mark Nelson.
Little Green Cars’ second album Ephemera (Glassnote) came out on CD, Vinyl, Digital on March 11 2016. The term ‘sophomore jinx’ may describe Ephemera, as the band suffered through two deaths and relationship break-ups ... Stevie O’Rourke described the record as “a transitional album... lyrically, it’s all about change – the end of some eras, new beginnings, learning from the past and looking to the future. Ephemera means things that are important to you, but only for a short time. That could apply to music or relationships or even a particular day.”
The John Mark Nelson-teamup show will be a sort of reunion for these two bands - they previously appeared together in 2013.
John Mark Nelson’s new album, I’m Not Afraid is available now via GNDWIRE Records/Thirty Tigers.

For Good was funded via crowdsource Kickstarter, and recorded parts at Justin Vernon's April Base compound and Eau Claire studio Hive. However, the majority of the album was recorded in Broder’s basement, in the company of his space heater and 3-year-old boy, Sonny.
The record-release party is this Saturday.
Special guests Greg Grease and Psymun to open.

…
Ireland's Foy Vance is currently in America, touring in support of Joy Of Nothing. The album featured special guests such as Ed Sheeran and Bonnie Raitt.
The band's first proper headlining tour is getting a lot of buzz …
Since the last time we saw Little Green Cars (in April at the 7th St. Entry), they’ve gotten a bit of an update—new paint job, matching pinstripes, maybe some sport wheels. In actuality, they’ve been touring non-stop since then and ended their U.S. Tour Tuesday at Minneapolis’ First Avenue Mainroom, sounding more confident and road tested with perfectly honed harmonies, in a satisfying 70 min. performance that translated well inside the bigger venue.
FOY VANCE
First up for the evening was spirited Northern Irishman Foy Vance, touring in support of his latest, Joy of Nothing (Glassnote Records) , and who provided a 40 min. breath-of-fresh-air set filled with toe-tapping songs, no-holds-barred stories, and a brutally funny and honest nature of telling things like he sees them. Opening with the inspiring ‘Be the Song’, Vance entertainingly interspersed his unique commentary during the song breaks- “I used to live in London—very expensive and full of wankers” and defining his current status, “Any port in storm, ladies, any port” were among the hilarious bits that kept most of the audience’s attention.
Foy Vance (Closeup)
Vance even went on to chastise the groups of people that were having full-voice conversations during his set, mentioning most attending were there for the actual music (which drew rave applause) and to the lot of people just there to be cool and seen, “good luck with all that…wankers”, which drew a collective laugh. In between, he moved from standing with guitar to sitting with a piano, playing a passionate ‘Feel for Me’, ‘Joy of Nothing’ ,and the set-closing ‘Guiding Light’ which he taught the audience the chorus to, and which we all continued singing, long after he left the stage. A unique treasure to be sure, especially live.
Little Green Cars
The Dublin quintet Little Green Cars (Stevie Appleby- voc/guitar; Dylan Lynch- drums; Donagh Seaver O'Leary- bass; Adam O'Regan- guitar; and Faye O'Rourke- co-voc., joined with Kevin, a touring keyboardist) began their set barely above a whisper, the acapella ‘Red’ with all members harmonizing under stark stage lighting, then gave way to the also delicate ‘Goodbye Blue Monday’, the band sounding assured in their combined voices.
Faye O'Rourke
The volume then amplified as soaring vocalist O’Rourke took over, with pipes and range reminiscent of Florence Welch with Dolores O'Riordan undertones. The boy/girl vocals were particularly effective on the driving ‘Angel Owl’ and four-part harmonies were on full display for radio hit ‘Harper Lee’. Most of the songs from their Glassnote debut, Absolute Zero, were played – the positively bouncy ‘Big Red Dragon’ and completely eerie ‘My Love Took Me Down to the River’ which starts quietly with an O’Rourke acapella, then builds impressively.
“It’s easy to fall in love with you”, starts their biggest hit, ‘John Wayne’ which had Appleby prefacing with a story of meeting an American girl and trying to impress her and the band ended the song with half the audience on-stage, dancing and singing along joyously.
For the encore, instead of the crowd again joining them on stage, the band decided to come out to the middle of the floor , for a quiet, off-mike version of ‘The Consequences of Not Sleeping’, surrounded on all sides by a mostly hushed and enraptured throng.
Though still somewhat nervous and reserved on stage, the group has definitely become more comfortable with the positive reception their indie folk-pop songs have been receiving and Appleby has gained a quicker wit when dealing with hecklers and responding on the fly.
The mostly younger crowd, was well-behaved with a few exceptions—those talking over the music, yelling idiot comments, and clearly not there for the bands; something both acts noted which was a little unfortunate on this, their final U.S. show before LGC returns to Europe and their first full-fledged tour of native Ireland. But, both Foy Vance and Little Green Cars rose above all of that, each delivering solid performances- and for those who weren’t paying full attention, you missed something exceptional.

Also playing this Monday at the Varsity Theater is The 1975:
Since we last saw the 1975, they are gearing up for their debut self-titled album, coming out September 3rd on Interscope Records. Leading up to the album …
Everybody loves ‘Chocolate’…the candy, as well as the current single from Manchester UK-based The 1975, whose debut album (on Dirty Hit/Polydor) debuted at #1 on the UK albums charts (even besting NIN new LP) and is starting to make substantial noise on these shores as well.
The band has actually been around in some form since 2002, and after 4 eps and now a full-length, is ready to fully conquer America. A sometimes melancholy blend of alt and guitar pop, singer Matt Healy actually cites director John Hughes and his bastion of 80’s coming-of-age-teen films as a major influence (don’t expect a Simple Minds cover in concert though).

Lucy Rose will be over at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in Saint Paul for her final 2013 Fall tour date.
I'll confess that I've never been to that venue before (since I'm primarily based in Minneapolis and rarely cross that Mississippi River to see shows). The right side and the wrong side of the river, right?
Rose will be playing songs from her debut album, Like I Used To, via Tirty Tigers with Sony RED distribution, including her recent singles, "Bikes" and "Middle of the Bed" (which you can download for free via Rolling Stone Magazine)

When we last saw the lads of Dublin quartet Kodaline, they were opening on a spring tour for The Airborne Toxic Event, to great reception. Now that their debut full-length, In a Perfect World (RCA/Red) has just been released, they’re returning on a headlining tour to re-introduce us to their anthemic blend of Irish alt-rock.
Fresh from a mini-residency in NYC (including a live appearance on VH-1), the tour also brings opener Diane Birch whose own new album, Speak a Little Louder (S-Curve) brings soul-pop influence with freshness from this keyboard playing singer-songwriter. Birch worked with Dap Kings drummer Homer Steinweiss and Aqualung’s Matt Hales to concoct the new tracks on this sophomore album, that shows her musical growth.
As well, Kodaline has been playing a Sam Cooke cover in concert, so chances of very soulful evening with both acts, is a near certainty, so make sure to book a ticket and arrive early.

..…
Here’s a little secret-- Little Green Cars are being driven by minors. As lead Stevie Appleby (vocals/ guitar) put it mid-way into their 60 min. set, “we’d love to join you drinking, but with these black ‘X’s’ on our hands…” The Dublin quintet had at least half the band sporting the underage marks on their hands, but any lack of alcohol was no deterrent to getting a spirited evening from a band driving nowhere but up.
JOHN MARK NELSON
Local singer-songwriter John Mark Nelson capably opened the show with a delicate performance of songs from his previous efforts, “Still Here” and “Waiting and Waiting”, including the locally in-rotation “Reminisce”, as well as new tracks from his upcoming release.
Little Green Cars members all age from 20 to 21, but they’ve already been together more than five years and had the good fortune of producer-of-the-moment Marcus Dravs (Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Mumford and Sons) being behind the boards for their just-released full length, ‘Absolute Zero’ (on Glassnote, which happens to be Mumford’s label as well). While their music comfortably fits under the ‘Anthem Folk’ umbrella, their Irish upbringing prompts a more complex description of their music; marked by soaring five-part harmonies and a nod of inspiration from Americana/rural music blended with elements of Irish music of the past. Fans of The Lumineers, Band of Horses, and Fleet Foxes are encouraged to take a listen and add them to their audio roster.
Starting bravely with the acapella, “Red”, and then adding gentle guitar for “Goodbye Blue Monday”, they immediately owned the room’s attention with their tight choral harmonies and male/female lead vocals from the tall, windswept-haired Appleby and co-vocalist Faye O'Rourke, who can sound like Dolores O'Riordan one song, and PJ Harvey the next. After warning us they would next play louder, a slow building “Angel Owl”, followed by the current single “Harper Lee”, dark with the appropriate lyric "like a crash I wait for the impact", which pricked up the audience with some familiarity.
Next up was a humorous poem-in-progress (or limerick?) from Appleby read from his phone, describing the band’s month-long trek through North America- the madness of SXSW in Austin, getting in a fight, staying warm in Quebec, and now trying to find something to rhyme with Minneapolis. This segued into a rousing “Big Red Dragon”, followed by O'Rourke in front of an emotive “The Kitchen Floor”, then reunited vocals lead by Appleby for “Them”. The main set then ended with the brilliantly titled “My Love Took Me Down To The River (To Silence Me)” and first single “The John Wayne”, of which Appleby remarked, “this might be the one song many of have heard before”, lyrics anthem-ing ‘It’s easy to fall in love, it’s easy to fall in love with you” which seemed to summarize the crowd’s feeling for the band this night.
After a brief walk off stage, the band returned to cheers and shouted requests, Appleby replying, “we don’t take suggestions, sorry”. Choosing to end with “The Consequences of Not Sleeping”, the song was prefaced by the story of Appleby actually not sleeping; forming the song loud enough in his kitchen in the wee hours into first-person camera, that it woke his father but ended up giving him the needed inspiration to finish. Despite their youth, Little Green Cars is currently in the fast lane with a successful North American Tour -a drink in Akron, OH was even named post-show after them... if only they could (legally) try it.
Little Green Cars at 7th Street Entry, Minneapolis (04/01/13)
New band Little Green Cars heads out on a first U.S. headlining tour this spring and plays the 7th St. Entry on April 1.
This Dublin-based quintet, currently riding high on the single The John Wayne, counts Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol amongst their biggest fans.
Recently signed to Glassnote/Island, they smartly hired producer Markus Dravs (Mumford and Sons, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Bjork) to helm their first full length, Absolute Zero (out March 26 in the US) and are somewhat road-tested already, after stints opening for The Antlers and Jake Bugg.

It's that time of year again: SXSW. Of and around this time of year (March), we get a massive influx of British bands in the States. That's really a benefit to everyone involved because the UK bands usually do a mini-USA tour or side shows. Expect to see more UK bands in the States (and expect us to cover many of them as possible).
Manchester's The 1975 is heading out on the road for their new EP, Music For Cars (out March 4th on Dirty Hit). Expect the band to return to the studios after the US tour to finalize a debut album, co-produced by the band and the award-winning Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, Foals).

I love comic books, but that Green Lantern movie looks AWFUL. No one I know who saw the movie said it was good, so I'll just wait for the rental. If you're looking to spend some greens, see below:
Green Room Music Source is sponsoring two shows at The Loring Theater in Minneapolis. Being from around here (and active in the music scene), I've seen many of these bands before. They are all pretty well-known if you live around here. The non-Minneapolis band is John Common and Blinding Flashes of Light (performing both nights), they are from Denver, Colorado.
The two nights are Friday (July 29th) and Saturday (July 30th) at The Loring Theater. Both shows are all-ages, which generally means the show starts really early: 8pm (but you may want to show up early). Both shows, I think are $10 in advance and $14 at the door.
I have been confirmed for Friday's show (so come say hi if you see me).
Friday, July 29 Lineup:
The Alarmists - 11:00pm
Pictures of Then - 10:00pm
John Common and Blinding Flashes of Light - 9:00pm
Maudlin - 8:00pm
Saturday, July 30 Lineup:
Communist Daughter - 11:00pm
Blue Sky Blackout - 10:00pm
John Common and Blinding Flashes of Light - 9:00pm
Greycoats - 8:00pm
Bad Panda Records, in association with Italian label, Ghost Records, wants us to know about the band Green Like July.
The band is offering two cover songs, available for download in a variety of formats at Bad Panda's website and includes a John Lennon cover "Crippled Inside" and Big Star's "September Gurls"*.
Green Like July – Two Cover Songs by Green Like July [ZIP] 01 Crippled Inside (John Lennon) [MP3] [WAV]
02 September Gurls (Big Star) [MP3] [WAV]
If you like what you've downloaded, check out Green Like July's second album, Four-Legged Fortune, produced by Saddle Creek's AJ Mogis and recorded at the ARC Studios (Bright Eyes, Pete Yorn, Julian Casablancas, Cursive).
As usual with this company (Anorak London), they send very little detail about their bands and they often never send album artwork. Which means I have nothing to work with.
All I know about this band, Little Green Cars, is that they're from Dublin, Ireland, and their new single is called The John Wayne, out July 25th.
Creep are duo producers (Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard), they recently remixed Memory Tapes' song "Green Knight". The video premiered on Stereogum in early July, and people really love the remix.
Fader is calling it "moping to it all night" as well as XLR8R who said, "putting this one on repeat".
Just the recommendations alone, I went ahead and downloaded the free track at soundcloud without listening to it first.
Green River Ordinance (GRO) released an all-covers EP last April called Songs We Like From Before We Were Born. You can get various packages from physical CDs and T-Shirts at bandcamp.com if you like what you hear.
Covers includes
Stealers Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle" (you may have been scarred by that Tarantino movie with this song),
Tom Petty's "American Girl", The Band's "The Weight", Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way", and The Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends".
Green Owl Records released Copenhagen producer CHLLNGR (aka Steven Jess Borth II) new record, Haven, earlier this month
I don't know how to say CHLLNGR, is it "challenger"? "chillinger"? I have the same problem with MSTRKFT, which I thought was "mister kraft", and RCRDLBL, which I could not pronounce for the longest time. Yes, it's a real problem when words are missing some vowels.
Anyway, you can download "May 3" free at soundcloud.
* PS, Ironically, the Green Room section was brought to my attention by September Gurl. The inspirational Alex Chilton passed away last year.
