The truth is, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Anime-loving singer/songwriter Matthew Sweet since I heard his breakout hit single “Girlfriend.” Sweet was my very first concert in 1991, at the Cadillac Club (long defunct) in Fresno, California. I was still in high school and still love and know all of the lyrics from Sweet’s albums and EPs pre-Son of Altered Beast.

Sweet is back in town in support of his 13th studio album Tomorrow’s Daughter (the follow-up to Tomorrow Forever), available via Honeycomb Hideout and MRI/Sony.

It’s the hottest ticket in town: Spoon and Grizzly Bear is playing Surly Festival Field this Saturday.

Grizzly Bear’s latest Painted Ruins is available now via RCA Records. The album has earned widespread praise from the New York Times, NPR Music and GQ, who commended the band’s “strikingly gorgeous music and harmonies”, while Esquire called the record “Their most mature album yet.”

We caught Spoon in Sep 2017 and said, “Following a break, rolling fog crept in under dim mono-chromatic lighting (with occasional strobe lights) and five louvered panels behind a set of scalloped curtains, to set the stage for Spoon’s hundred-minute headlining set. An extended instrumental intro for the opening ‘Do I Have to Talk You Into It’ brought the band members up one by one in the near darkness, making it look like they were performing from inside the mothership from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
