On the autumn days in the middle of October (thank god because we would all melt in the otherwise typical days of such shenanigans) will bestow the 6th installation of the transcendent music festival Desert Daze in Joshua Tree, California. It is known that J Tree (as us locals call it) has a somewhat spiritual energy about it, and musicians have been flocking there for years to get juiced on the wondrous inspiration that the desert embodies. So it’s fitting that some of the most eclectic artists in the game right now would be part of this special lineup. Music lovers camp onsite under the stars for this 4 day event.

While last year’s lineup was oodles of impressive (Washed Out, Deerhunter and The Black Angels, to name a few) this year will be equally scintillating. Thursday night John Dayer of On Sees and Troy Bootow of Death Hymn Number 9 will DJ, amongst other special guests. Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile and the Sea Lice will be kicking off Friday, playing tunes from their collaborative album that is expected to be released later this year.  Adult Swim will present Things You’ve Never Seen in a Desert!, and Prettiest Eyes (a local LA band), Panda Bear, Ariel Pink, Liars, Boris, La Femme, The Budos Band, Lee Fields & the Expressions will follow, amongst others.

Saturday and Sunday will be filled with Iggy Pop, John Cale, Tortoise, The Gories, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton, Twin Peaks, Avey Tare, Mr. Elevator, JJUUJJUU, Mint Field, Spiritualized, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions, Eagles of Death Metal, Allah-Las, Atlas Sound, John Dwyer DJ set, Khruangbin, Cigarettes After Sex, Weyes Blood, L.A. Witch, Jerry Paper, Death Valley Girls, and Fever the Ghost. Weyes Blood will by far be the of the upmost importance for moi, as her latest album Front Row Seat To The Earth has been in heavy rotation for the past year.

Danny Perez, Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show, Billgazer, The Blindspot Project, and Cloaking will provide all three outdoor stages with projections all weekend long.

Sonic performances will run alongside panel speakers, curated daily film screenings, and the Mystic Bazaar’s daily schedule of metaphysical workshops.

The Institute of Mentalphysics, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Son, founded by Ding Le Mei, a westerner turned Tibetan Monk, is the oldest and largest spiritual retreat center in the western United States. The beautifully maintained grounds of garden paths, fountains, labyrinths and captivating architecture rest atop a rare confluence of three underground aquifers and a measurable magnetic field which causes a palpable energetic effect on those who visit. Audience members have the chance of staying in one of Wright’s on site cottages, or camping under the vast, twinkling desert sky. Limited in capacity to provide the kind of personal experience that just can’t be had at larger festivals, you don’t just go to Desert Daze, you profoundly experience Desert Daze.

When I think about papercuts, I think about licking envelopes and cutting my tongue. It's painful, and it's not a good thought. Hopefully San Francisco's Papercuts is not as unpleasant.

Papercuts is the stagename for singer/songwriter/producer Jason Quever, who is currently on tour in support of his latest album Life Among the Savages (Easy Sound / Memphis Industries).

Opening up will be California psych-pop duo Skygreen Leopards, who is currently on tour with Woods. Skygreen Leopards' latest album Family Crimes came out earlier this summer via Woodsist.

We previously mentioned that The Bots were two brothers, Mikaiah Lei (lead vocal, guitar, bass) and Anaiah Lei (drums & percussions, backing vocal), and noted that they were really young (at the time Anaiah was 16).

The Bots are touring the Midwest around Riotfest, and will be stopping by Minneapolis at the Nether Bar (inside Mill City Nights), in support of their forthcoming album Pink Palms, set for release October 14th via FADER Label.

Opening up the show are The Picturebooks, described as a new band, the blues-rock duo (Fynn & Philipp). Noisey recently debuted the band’s video for "Your Kisses Burn Like Fire" and said it makes you want to buy a motorcycle and disappear into the desert. The Picturebooks will be showcasing some songs from their forthcoming album Imaginary Horse, due out October 7th.

What an achievement, and, as a bonus, they are taking fan requests. If I can get them to play "Riding the Rocket" or their cover of the Carpenters' "Top of the World", I'll be happy.

One of VH1's greatest 100 women of rock, Rickie Lee Jones will be doing a residency over at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis, starting November 4th.

Expect her to play her big hit "Chuck E's In Love" from her 1979 debut album, and jazz standards, and also some cover tracks from her 2012 album The Devil You Know.

November 8th sees The Besnard Lakes at the Triple Rock in Minneapolis. The new tour marks the first time the band has hit the West Coast since the release of their latest album Until In Excess, Imperceptible UFO. The album was released in March via Jagjaguwar.

Opening up will be Elephant Stone, a band that we previously covered in Minneapolis, noting that he "won over several in the crowd with his spirited solos and weaving late 60’s era Beatles/Kinks sounds with a modern edge."

Valentine's Day 2012

You may, or may not, know that we don't like V-Day. That's not stopping the rest of the world apparently. Below are some Valentine-related music news.

Read More Glee Glee is charming in how, through their music selection, they have a little something for everybody. Taking us on a genre rollercoaster ride, they gave us a rock ballad, an 80's new wave party hit, an emotional show tune, and a rendition of Mama Cass's "Dream a Little Dream", a song originated in the 1930's.

In terms of #1 hits, no one can hold a candle to Fox's successful "Glee". Although I must confess, I still don't watch Glee, but I may have to watch an episode and compare it to "Smash", which is NBC's answer to Glee. Even though based on the original music and musical, the two are not in the same ballpark.

Tonight's episode, February 14th, is all about Valentine and Love. Guest includes Jeff Goldblum (“Jurassic Park”) and Brian Stokes Mitchell (“Kiss Me, Kate”).

Music from the episode will be under Glee's "Music from Heart" and available on iTunes now.

Brooklyn Vegan premiered The Big Sleep's "Valentine". I guess it was a big deal because the band took a break, but they are now working on new songs and will be touring (see tour dates below). Singer/bassist Sonya Balchandani explained, “We took a little break, worked on stuff separately and just lived our lives.”

Not really much else was given, other than that the band sounds like "beat-folk". Their self-titled debut single is available right now on their website. As a cover-lover, I knew instantly it was Cyndi Lauper's "All Through the Night" and Liz Phair's famous song "Never Said Nothing". I couldn't figure if "Looking For You" was a cover or not, I didn't know it.
