There are places at the table.
With veteran southern rock bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Molly Hatchet losing original members, the Robinson brothers’ saying The Black Crowes are over, and the Allman Brothers calling it a day, the echelon of bands sitting on the southern rock table has some openings—enter: Blackberry Smoke.
The Atlanta band, active for fifteen years, has been slowly building an audience and with its latest album, Holding All the Roses (Rounder Records), has truly hit the big time, surprising everyone when it hit not only #7 on the Billboard Rock chart but #1 on the Billboard Country chart last week.
Ben Miller Band
|
The evening began with a short set by the Ben Miller Band, an Ozark-fuelled mud-stomping Joplin, MO threesome that takes everything back to basics. Miller plays banjo, guitar and harmonica through an old telephone receiver and cord, percussionist Doug Dicharry plays traditional percussion as well as washboard and spoons, and Scott Leeper plays a self-constructed bass, made from a weed eater string strung up a wooden pole on a metal washtub.
After opening for ZZ Top in 2013, the band returned with New West Records release, Any Way, Shape or Form last year. Set highlight was probably the ending medley which featured a sped-up mix of BMB originals and standards like Ram Jam’s ‘Black Betty’, all whirled about in a hootenanny hoedown.
There’s space at the table of classic-sounding British blues rock as well.
The Temperance Movement
|
Bands like Free, The Faces, and early Rolling Stones, Who and Led Zeppelin, helped set the tone of UK artists influenced by American blues originators like Howlin’ Wolf, Son House, and Muddy Waters. London-based The Temperance Movement refreshingly resuscitates that sound with its just released self-titled debut on Concord Music/Earache Records.
Temperance Movement: Phil Campbell
|
Singer Phil Campbell looks a little like a backwoods Thom Yorke and moves like a manic Mick Jagger. Storming out of the gate with the new ‘Modern Massacre’, the song’s high-revv’d tempo lived up to the band’s description of it being a “real smack in the chest”. The growly Campbell sounds a little like Chris Robinson, who himself channels those UK bands and earlier blues greats, but Campbell and co. mesh it all into a sound of their own, that looks forward with a nod to the past.
‘Pride’, done midway into their 40 min. set, is a slow building romp and the title track of their initial EP. Last song, ’Take It Back’, started casually like ZZ Top’s ‘La Grange’ with Campbell wailing on harmonica and repeating the line, “it’s all gone, but it’s all right now” before drums and bass kicked it, with guitars following, for a restlessly ideal finish.
The band clearly won over the mostly unaware-of-them-previously audience who supported everything about them except the origin of their name - a social movement urging us to moderate our alcoholic consumption- as most held drinks and beers high as they left the stage.
The ‘Smoke has definitely been rising. Since leaving Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Records last year, expectations were high for their new record, and as the chart positions show, they delivered. The full crowd that was present for Blackberry Smoke’s 100 min. set was a good cross section of their fan base- motorcyle riders, country types, older classic rock fans, college students, and others.
Blackberry Smoke: Charlie Starr
|
Though the band doesn’t talk much between songs, its tight southern rock sound, ever-changing setlist, and choice covers, make them an entertaining watch. The Georgia five-piece (Charlie Starr – Vocals/ Guitar; Richard Turner- Bass; Brit Turner- Drums; Paul Jackson- Guitar; and Brandon Still – Keyboards) started their Friday night with ‘Six Ways to Sunday’, a not-so-subtle declaration of affection, then followed it up with the new album’s opener and band’s own declaration of independence, ‘Let Me Help You (Find the Door)’.
Starr and Jackson’s guitars alongside the Turner’s rhythm section provided a wall of deep-fried sound, while Still’s keyboards were mostly in the background, putting the seasoning on each of the tracks. “Everybody feeling loose now?” Starr asked before slowing it down for ‘Sleeping Dogs’, from previous album, The Whippoorwill, which melded into a pitch-perfect refrain of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Your Time is Gonna Come’. A verse from the 1929 blues classic ‘Rollin’ and Tumblin’ led seamlessly into their own ‘Sanctified Woman’.
Setlist: Live Long and Prosper
|
Things slowed mid-set with the knee-slappin’ ‘Lay it All on Me’ and acoustic ‘Aint Got the Blues’, which had the crowd singing along with the chorus, causing Starr to mention, “you kick Kansas City’s a$$!”. ‘Keep On Keepin’ On’, a song from 2003, was noted by Starr as the band finished as it being the first time it was played live, which seems surprising.
‘Leave a Scar’ the title of the band’s recent live double album, seemed an appropriate end to the main set; then after a break, they re-emerged with an unexpected cover of ‘California Man’, a 1971 song by The Move, featuring co-lead vocals by ELO’s Jeff Lynne on the original. The Allman-esque ‘Who Invented the Wheel’ followed, and the band wrapped with ‘Ain’t Much Left of Me’ which after 100+ min, is maybe what they were feeling, being spent after giving so much.
Southern Blues Rock has a band on a new level, as evidenced this night, and maybe UK blues rock has its newest shining star as well—places at the table have been assigned.

PETER WOLF CRIER
at Turf Club
Friday 01/02/15, 8pm ($8)
turfclub.net
Brian Moen and Peter Pisano wrote, "Twin Cities, it's been awhile since we've been in town..."
It's true, the last time we saw the band Peter Wolf Crier, it was for their CD release show for Garden of Arms (Jagjaguwar) at the Cedar Cultural Center in September 2011.
They also add on their website, "Dudes, what the hell have you been doing? In short: we are going to be sending the update for the stars, but for now we wanted to say thanks for sticking with us."
It should be interesting to see what they have in store for 2015 with this special first show for the year on January 2nd at the Turf Club in St Paul, Minnesota. Let's hope they cover INXS' "Never Tear Us Apart".
Local BBGun (who previously opened up for The Ericksons in October) and Actual Wolf (who we saw with Johnnyswim in February).

As previously mentioned during another Led Zeppelin ( Zoso) tribute show, Behzad wrote, "I met a couple of people that make it a priority to attend at least one Led Zeppelin tribute band concert a week! They could rattle off all the different bands and gave critiques of which was better in sound, appearance, and overall showmanship. Unfortunately, these “groupies” weren’t very coherent as they seemed to have pregamed the event very well..."

OUR LIFE STORY REUNION SHOW
at Triple Rock Social Club
Saturday 01/03/15, 8pm ($7)
triplerocksocialclub.com
Billed as "Our Life Story Reunion Show", this show is the return of local Our Life Story, who was last seen with 2011's I'd Rather Change Than Stay The Same.
Our Life Story's drummer Billy Mitchell is listed to also play in all the opening bands: Griswold, Triple Crossed and Internet Dating. This will be his last show before he moves away.
Just a note, but poor punk band Griswold, they just can't seem to catch a break. The band's name is too similar to Australian band The Grisworlds (who we just saw in July 2014). And previously called themselves Sleepyhead... which is in direct conflict with active Boston band Sleepyhead (their 90s debut album was recently reissued on Slumberland Records). Yeah, we get it, coming up with a good band name is hard. Let's hope if they decide to change their name again, that it is not associated with Twins, Bears, or Gold.

Led Zeppelin
Much like those documentary-type books, such as Queen Live: A Concert Documentary and The Smiths: The Visual Documentary, the iOS application, This Day In Led Zeppelin, is chock-full …

Last Saturday night Zoso, a Led Zeppelin tribute band, rocked out Mill City Nights. Not only does the band attempt to capture Zeppelin’s sound, but each member has embodied their characters down to the finest of details with Matt Jernigan playing Robert Plant, John McDaniel as Jimmy Page, Adam Sandling as John Paul Jones, and Greg Thompson as John Bonham.
For those of you that don’t know, Zoso is a symbol picked out by Page for their 4 th, untitled album. In that album, each member picked out a symbol to represent themselves. Thus making Zoso apropos for a tribute band that tries to not only symbolize Led Zeppelin, but also the Rock ‘n Roll era which they came from.
Before attending their concert, I had no idea how big the “tribute band” business was. I met a couple of people that make it a priority to attend at least one Led Zeppelin tribute band concert a week! They could rattle off all the different bands and gave critiques of which was better in sound, appearance, and overall showmanship. Unfortunately, these “groupies” weren’t very coherent as they seemed to have pregamed the event very well.
Matt Jernigan and John McDaniel

Zoso opened up with “Rock and Roll” and the crowd went wild. Greg Thompson played John Bonham perfectly with that drum intro and Matt Jernigan took on Robert Plant with great confidence. They all had the clothes, hair, and demeanor of their alter egos.
They got loud with “Communication Breakdown,” mellowed out with “That’s The Way,” and showed off some of their individual skills with “The Song Remains the Same.” In between “The Song Remains the Same” and “Stairway To Heaven,” Adam Sandling wailed on the drums for a good 7 minutes. I couldn’t believe he had my attention for the whole solo. Sandling went from the traditional Rock ‘n Roll drums to bongos then smashed the massive gong behind him for an exclamation point.
After he was done the rest of the band members came back on stage. John McDaniel, along with the double guitar he started playing during “The Song Remains the Same,” belted out some more sweet riffs a la Jimmy Page.

It was a great concert overall. Other than a little reverb coming above stage left, Mill City Nights worked as a decent venue. Jernigan (Plant) did a great job in connecting with the crowd by holding short conversations with them in between songs and McDaniel (Page) raised the crowd’s volume with his great technique and ability to improvise.
If you’re looking to relive the ‘70s or catch a glimpse of a time you were too young to live, go to a Zoso concert. They won’t let you down.

Much like those documentary-type books, such as Queen Live: A Concert Documentary and The Smiths: The Visual Documentary, the iOS application, This Day In Led Zeppelin, is chock-full of details about the band, courtesy of This Day in Music Apps. While this kind of trivial information is cool for fans of Led Zeppelin and trainspotters alike, I find that if you have little or no interest in the band, that this application will be completely useless to you. If you love this band, keep reading:
The pricing is perfect, considering that this is a universal application for both iPhone and iPad. Although I will admit that the iPad option wasn't really thought out, that this application was really designed for the held-held iPhone or iPod Touch. Some clues: this application doesn't do landscape and images are still pretty tiny, with no option to expand to a larger version. The larger images isn't going to be deal breaker, in fact, I can understand why they'd want small images, because I'm assuming there are about 365 images (which could explain why the application is a large 90mb download). I do like that the images are randomly displayed.
As for the meat of the product, you get a trivia about Led Zeppelin based on the day, broken down by various years. For instance, this day in Zeppelin (January 31 st), LZ played their first of two nights at the Fillmore East in New York in 1969 and in 1975 they played Detroit Michigan (with the set list information). The nice thing about this is that you can skip around, so if a particular day is important to you (like, say, your birthday), you can read what LZ were up to that day.
As I previously mentioned, some of this data is a little far-fetched, like do I really need to know the birthday of Deborah Bonham (sister of the late drummer John Bonham)?
But wait, there's more, you get a few extras with this application: Trivia, Quiz, Song Notes, Store and Extras. The later two will take you out of the application, so I'll just only briefly mention the first three. The Trivia are basically recycled data from the "On this Day" information, I think in random order. The Quiz is fun, you aren't told what the right answer is and it's only in session of 10 questions per quiz (also random questions). The highlight is the Song Notes for me. Much more information than any liner notes, this drills down from album details to facts about each song. Of course, I looked up "Stairway to Heaven", which is their most popular song in the US (despite having never been issued a single in the states). The song was so popular that it was played on terrestial radio over three million times. Just to put that in perspective, they said that if you played all three million back-to-back, it would run for 44 solid years.
Anyway, a delightful program, This Day In Led Zeppelin is recommended if you like Led Zeppelin. It is doing well in the iTunes UK and I'm holding out for a This Day in The Smiths.
