The Teen Age (with Lazyeyes)

Two of Brooklyn's finest, The Teen Age and Lazyeyes are currently on a tour together, stopping by Minneapolis' 7th Street Entry last night, July 24th. I believe this was both band's first time in Minneapolis.

I think you can tell right away that the two bands were great friends, and on their eighth day on tour together, it is pretty common to see the two bands invade each other's stage.

Teen Age Setlist

Starting The Teen Age's set, earlier than advertised, the band, as previously mentioned, played fast-paced, punk rock... and mostly new or unreleased tracks. The two latest songs they've recorded for Old Flame Records were played, including "Low Cunning" and its b-side "Pieces."

They ended their set with "Backwards", a song that they had just learned to play while on tour. They jokingly said that if they failed miserably, that it would be the last thing we would remember the band for.

Lazyeyes confessed that this was "the most sober we've ever been on tour"... Seeing them crashing and falling and rolling on the stage, if that was their most sober, they must be pretty amazing drunk.

Again, everyone is friends with each other, their drummer asked why it said "F*** You Drew" (instead of the correct song, "Adaptation") on the setlist. And as you can see from the photo of one of the setlist, it lists Echo and the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" as "Lips Like Booger" with a rude drawing.

The cover song was probably the highlight of the show for me, as everyone from The Teen Age joined them on stage, singing, dancing, and having a blast.

Lazyeyes' latest EP is New Year, available now. If you catch these guys on tour, there is a special tour-only split cassette from Old Flame Records, which you can pick up for $5.

Flood Magazine recently shared Lazyeyes' "Fractals" (taken from their New Year EP) via Soundcloud.



As for The Teen Age, Justina saw them at Northside Festival 2014 in New York and wrote, "Seriously locally based (the lead singer lives down the street), The Teen Age plays fast-paced, punk rock music with a wave of surf rock mixed in. Their catchy hooks remind me of The Hives, but are combined with fairly low-key singing. Even in the small space, the band moved around and gave off a lot of contagious energy."

Texas' This Will Destroy You (often abbreviated to TWDY) will be doing a small Midwest tour next week, starting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in support of their latest album Another Language (Suicide Squeeze Records), which reached #7 on Billboard Heatseekers Album Chart when it was released last September. The Boston Globe described the latest release as, "Blending the intensity of doom metal with the fragility of shoegaze, the music burns slowly, shifting from ambient to turbulent and back."

We previously saw TWDY at 7th Street Entry in 2011, and was surprised to learned that they were an all-instrumental band: "I didn't know This Will Destroy You was an all-instrumental band. I should have seen it coming when the stage was cleared and there were no microphones."

Supporting TWDY will be The Velvet Teen (yes! another 'teen' band), who I actually though broke up when drummer Logan Whitehurst died from cancer and bassist Josh Staples left the band in 2007. Glad to see that the trio is back now. The Velvet Teen's latest All Is Illusory came out on June 30, 2015.

Tour de Fat festival is coming back to Minneapolis next Saturday, July 25th!

Last year, the festival brought us Black Joe Lewis and the year before that, Those Darlins (which you can read all about it here).

This year, the big musical act is Americana/Folk band Blind Pilot from Portland, Oregon. The last time I heard from the band, members of the band (Kati Claborn, Luke Ydstie, and Ryan Dobrowski) formed a new band called Hook & Anchor.

THE TING TINGS

We love The Ting Tings, the band is back with third full-length album, Super Critical, which was released in stores this week (1/13) via Finca/[PIAS]. The LP--co-produced by Andy Taylor of Duran Duran--was released in their native U.K. this past October.

The globetrotting pop duo (Katie White and Jules De Martino) will be doing a small select exclusive North American tour dates to support the new album. If you look at the January dates, it's to serve their biggest market (major cities in the West and East coast, including Los Angeles and New York).

The group will also return for SXSW 2015, more the latest touring information, see thetingtings.com.

Minneapolis hip-hop collective Doomtree is on the road to SXSW 2015! The tour is also to promote his upcoming full-lenth album All Hands, due January 27, 2015 on their own Doomtree Records.

As you know, Doomtree recently sold out all their December appearances, so they have very strong support locally.

Count me as one of the many people unhappy with the misspelling of Happyness, who probably stole their name from the 2006 film The Pursuit Of Happyness. Still, that didn't stop the South London trio to becoming one of NME's Best Newcomers, as well as The Sunday Times Best Albums of The Year....

Happyness recently announced that they have signed with Bar None Records for USA and Moshi Moshi Records for UK/RoW (alongside Magniph Records in Japan). With the Bar None announcement, they also noted that their debut album Weird Little Birthday will get an "Enhanced Version 2.0 CD" treatment, as well as a long awaited vinyl release in the USA.

US fans will be glad to see that they will be here for SXSW 2015, with brief tour from the Midwest to the East Coast.
