I'm no Radiohead fan. I've never really understood all the commotion. Many amazing moments - many - and on paper they really should be my type of band but alas I've never really warmed to them. Maybe their fans? Maybe the Oxfordshire public schools they went too? Maybe it's Thom Yorke never really looking happy? This post is not about that though. This post is about My First Playlist record - Kid A.

'Those' albums that I love, well most of the time I never even existed or was still playing in a sand pit to care but for Kid A I was there. Listening to it over the weekend I have made the informed opinion that there will never be another record like it. You could never have imagined an English rock band turning their back on stadiums and making a 540 degree turn + add to that, if they do all this in a parallel universe. The Radiohead I knew still existed in name, but the Radiohead of old or Parallel Universe A was plutons, atoms and string theories away from it in Parallel Universe B. For massive bands to go feral and go all weird and add 'textures', well it wasn't so normal in the first year of this new century. Normal now - not normal then.

In 2000, I was well into my bands that included **cough Pulp, Suede, Oasis, Blur, Manics, Chemical Brothers, ummmm the first Coldplay album and anything worth getting into because of reading 4 month behind copies of the Melody Maker. What I was listening too was so removed from what my school friends were listening too that I may have lived in that parallel universe.

For me Kid A is about dial-up internet and trying desperately on that hour a day my parents would let me 'surf' the net to (try and) download bootlegged versions of "Optimistic" and "The National Anthem." It was mind blowing that I was this 15 year old kid in coastal Australia who could then hop on the net and with the cyberpower of Kazaa and Napster, type in what Triple J were telling me the names were (they hadn't been released) and then hope to god those people didn't go offline which meant the song would cease to download and I'd have to wait till tomorrow. Picture this - songs that were only played the night before in a huge tent in Paris - well f**k me - that's when everything changed. Everything.

I can't remember if I bought Kid A before going to the US on a Mum-funded holiday or if I got it the day I got back. I seem to remember the latter, having only recently returned and going to Target after school to get the album on its initial release. Talking to a friend of mine about it many years ago, not all copies came with the little comic tucked under the plastic bit where the actual CD sits. The physical weight of the CD always felt much heavier (discuss?) to my other CDs which was how it was discovered.

Kid A to me is something else entirely. It's not just Radiohead's 4th album. It foresaw what bands could and would sound like in the future (better for it) - how peoples listening habits and what we call playlists could encompass. Jumping from ambient ("Kid A") to Scott Walker ("How to Disappear Completely") to IDM ("Idioteque") back to guitars 'n' drums 'n' s**t ("Optimistic") and anything in between.

At the time, my life basically revolved around being a school kid and listening to Triple J and watching Channel V. It was definitely spoken about a lot on Channel V and Triple J all doing specials and an issue of Q Mag I had for many years had a huge interview with them. In it Thom Yorke talked about using Photoshop techniques that are now things I use every day in my dayjob. As a Y2K album - for me it represents not just the tunes - it's a 'time and a place album' but in a removed kind of way. I never listened to it with friends or anything so it doesn't represent a social memory, but I guess it is - the way bootleggers would upload live tracks that were barely 24 hours old - that's a kind of shared experience but with no emotional attachment which I guess is also one of the carry over themes from OKC - all this technology.

12 years on we're all totally drone like with Facebook and people glued to their iPhones. It really has turned out to be a Kid A life for us all.

Vu caught some Australian bands in the USA, they were here for CMJ and decided to play some dates in America. Gold Fields were seen at Nether Bar, Minneapolis (10/13) and 7th Street Entry, Minneapolis (10/27).

What began many moons ago as a joke name for a tribute band has recently developed into the perfect way to spend an evening at our favourite bowlo/community club, the PBC!! For those unfamiliar with the work of Dayton, Ohio band Guided By Voices, needless to say there is plenty of evidence on You Tube, but for now I'll just concur with White House Press Secretary Jay Carney by saying Guided By Voices is the greatest rock and roll band of the modern era, in my humble opinion. Myself and a bunch of mates will be playing a couple of sets of GBV classics, with the evening to be opened by local songsmith Tom Warren in his solo guise as Telepathetic. More details as they come to light...the setlists, however, will remain a closely guarded secret until performance. Feel free to post suggestions below though!

Radiohead - Palo Alto

Overall, this is one of our better Britpop show, our tenth show on this sub-topic within the W♥M Radio shows.

The show is split into two topics: News and upcoming events with Britpop.com.au. They are currently running a "The Songs that Saved Your Life" Best B-Side contest. You can apparently win chips & records.

Select Magazine (April 1993)

The second part of the show is all about British magazines. We touch on some of these: Select Magazine, Q Magazine, Vox, NME, Melody Maker, The Face, Word, Uncut Magazine, Mojo, and a few other music-focused magazine. Most of these magazines are monthlies, with the exception of the weekly NME and MM - although eventually MM was shut down by IPC (the UK's largest magazine company, currently owned by Time-Warner).

As for the future of magazines, I was just at the shop today and "big" magazines costs $29 - as much as a softcover book. Surprisingly, the price of the latest Mojo magazine is relatively "cheap" for $9 and comes with a free CD. Looking at my old 1991 magazines, the average prices for those were $3, compared to today's cost of $10 or more.

NOTE: The recording program which I was using started suddenly to ask me to 'register' it, which is annoying because it's now become a nagware. About nearly 30 minutes into recording, the audio started clipping, which made it basically unlistenable. Apologies to Sally & Kristen, as the last segment had to be re-recorded using a brand new software, voipcallrecording, which I will be using in the future. I've already done tests on it, it records in mono at 16hz (not at 44hz as the other software), but it still sounded good to me.

Show #69 will be posted sometime tomorrow, so expect another double-wammy.

Playground Weekender Review

Sunburns all round, in a curious pattern on both my arms. Anyway, Playground Weekender, the 4-day music festival has now been and gone. Friday afternoon happened to see Sally, Maureen and Steve pile into Steve’s quite swish mini and zip through the bush up to the ever lovely Wisemans Ferry. A perfect afternoon for a boat ride a short way up the Hawkesbury for Sally to show her true engineering skills in the “putting up a tent” arena; Team weheartmusic had arrived.

The Cribs - Men's Needs

The Cribs; a young group of English lads, loud and dirty guitar-based indie at it’s finest. And then we have Johnny Marr of The Smiths fame; the latest addition to The Cribs, less bursting with energy, but to tell you the truth, he was the biggest drawcard for me and possibly quite a few others.

Ok Go: OK NO!

Now I have never been a huge fan of OK Go, but I thought I’d give them a go, with the secret hope that they’d get some treadmills out for my viewing pleasure. Treadmills? No. But bell ringing and fluffy incandescent guitars… almost as good.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre we nearly at the top of my list of bands for the weekend and quite a fitting choice to end the Friday evening line-up. Not too raucous for those of us who were looking forward to a nice nap (*ahem*), but by no means boring. Psychedelic-shoe gaze rock, with tambourine included. Sure many of their songs sounded quite alike to me, but the upside is that even though they sounded quite similar, they were all equally as good. The set even saw a guest appearance from Aimee Nash from The Black Ryder.

The highlight of the Saturday (don’t laugh) had to be Manchoir. Imagine eight men, donned in blue wife-beater singlets singing acapella. I Touch Myself, Dead Or Alive and the Home and Away Theme song, to name just a few, were accompanied by some delightful hand actions and embellished with the odd swear-word. Special mention must also be made to the sound and lighting team who managed to get a bit of a backdrop going using MS Paint (the computer drawing program of the true artiste)…. Oh, I suppose you just had to be there.

As the afternoon progressed into the night and the $8 beverages began flowing the main stage began to attract more and more people. It also may have had something to do with the extreme heat of the sun and the size of the shadow cast by the stage. The Black Ryder, not the most fitting soundtrack to a stinking hot summer day, were amazing. Psychedelic-esque and melancholy; brilliant.

Legoman: Has trouble walking up hills

Next I ventured into the crowd to inspect some of the costumed individuals that were wandering around on what happened to be “fancy dress Saturday”. I must say there were far too many Indians roaming around, not sure what the go was with that. However, there were quite a few notably excellent costumes. My personal favourite was the guy (I think it was a guy) dressed up as Gumby. The carpenter who fashioned a life-size Lego man costume from wood was probably more crazy than not. Particularly when it came to navigating hills, but A+ for effort…. and a special mention goes out to the highly intoxicated boy in the Superman suit designed for 8 year olds (made me laugh anyway).

 

Bjorn Again: 70s calling

The bands of the evening that we managed to see were both very entertaining indeed. Namely Bjorn Again and Polyphonic Spree. As you may have guessed Bjorn Again happen to be and Abba tribute band. But wow, they really quite close to the real deal (or so I’d assume), even down to the fake Swedish accents. I can only describe them as “fun”. For Abba fans it would have possibly been some kind of moving experience, but for those not such large fans of Abba it would have at least been mildly amusing.

The Polyphonic Spree were as epic as expected. With the cast of thousands they were highly entertaining. It’s always brilliant to see such a large group of people coming together and performing so tightly. All dressed in white; mesmerising dance moves (especially to those of us who had been sipping beverages in the sun all day). And all those uplifting songs…. Nice.

Wacko Jacko

Shamefully (I blame the rest of my festival posse) we skipped out early on Sunday and sadly missed some of the acts I was more looking forward to catching. That is, British Sea Power, Bluejuice and Orbital. But the word on the street is that it was indeed I that was the fool with regards to leaving early, missing these bands who turned out to be amazing.

Anyway, thanks to Tom and Felicity for helping us to attend such a great event. And special thanks to the rest of team weheartmusic (Maureen and Steve) and to young Chris Thodey (competition winner) who supplied us with a few happy snaps. ____

BRITPOPCAST #4: TOP TEN BRITPOP COUNTDOWN

This is the best of the best, and as far as I'm concern, this is the best countdown ever. If you had to listen to just one of our podcast, I think this the one you have to listen to.

Going into the recording, we already knew that it would be one massive recording session that will be split into two parts. So the first part is the countdown, thirty of our favorite Britpop tunes. The second part will be uploaded next week and involves a very hard Britpop Q Magazine Quiz. Seriously, it was hard, even for seasoned veterans like ourselves.

The next show, some ideas: Britpop girl bands ? Britpop band reunions ? If those doesn't sound appealing, let me know what you'd like us to discuss. Otherwise, I can always talk hours on end about stalking Louise Wener.

As for the Britpop top list, these are our preference and not a mean to measure how important a band is to that genre. Also, obviously we all had our Pulp, Blur, and Oasis moment, but the choice in songs are interesting to note. I have always known that my top two are the Blur vs Oasis, it was the other eight that was hard to have placement. I could have easily had a top 20 or 30. Easily.
