Turnout for the show was actually really, really good for a long 4th of July extended weekend. Fans packed the dance floor early to get a good spot by the time Amsterdam’s Klangstof took the stage.
The quartet (Koen van de Wardt, Wannes Salome, Jun Christian Villanueva and Jobo Engh) seemed bittersweet as they said they were sad that this was their second to their last show in America. The tone in singer Koen’s voice suggest that they may not return for quite a while.
Starting their show with an instrumental song ‘Doolhof’ in a poorly lit stage, it set up this slow burning melodic song that sounded like they were inspired by early shoegazing movement... although fans have suggested they’re more in tune with Radiohead (which is not a bad comparison at all).
With only one record, Close Eyes To Exit (Mind of a Genius Records), the band mostly stuck to those songs. They ended their set with ‘Island’, rocking out uncontrollably in backlit and bathed in red lights.
After this, Klangstof will be playing a series of European music festivals, including Latitude and Bestival.
Swedish indie rockers Miike Snow took the stage later than advertised. Just a backstory, but the name is really pronounced “Mike Snow”, based on their mutual friend Mike Snow, and not an homage to the great director Takashi Miike (although the band are fans of Miike’s works).
Since the band already did a tour for their third record iii in 2016, the iii songs were reduced to about five songs (‘My Trigger’, ‘Genghis Khan’, ‘The Heart Of Me’, ‘Heart Is Full’, and ‘I Feel The Weight’).
The third record was actually written in 2015, after a long break from 2011/2012’s Happy to You. The band previewed the lead single ‘Heart Is Full’ from iii in October 2015, and steadily build up anticipation throughout the rest of 2015.
Their intro song to the show, ‘My Trigger’, sounded a little different than typical Miike Snow songs, in that it sounded a little disco-ey. A faster, upbeat song, ‘The Heart Of Me’ was included on the Forza Horizon 3 video game soundtrack, which proved to be the perfect song for driving.
The remainder of their set was dedicated to fan-favorite songs from their first two records Miike Snow and Happy To You.
