Ah, the mornings are beginning to be met by a cool autumn breeze...so this must mean desert festival season is under way! Desert Daze has been a myriad of magical atmospheric wonder along with the most entertaining of artists, and this year is no exception. With Tame Impala headlining, it could in fact be the best one yet.
I could enumerate on how this festival is, in my opinion, the Mecca of all festivals, but it is really something to be seen by the own eye to truly comprehend. Along with bizarre instillations and an entire village complete with meditation tent and tea ceremonies, this isn’t just a music festival…it’s an Extraterrestrial Festival.
The California-based festival run by Jjuujju’s guitarist Phil Pirrone has an impressive lineup this year featuring Tame Impala, My Bloody Valentine, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard (also a returning band), Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, Shellac, Ty Segall & White Fence, Warpaint, Earth (performing The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull), Malcom Mooney of CAN, Steve Albini, Connan Mockasin, Pond, and Julia Holter, Earthless. There are always surprise guests and DJ’s along with plenty of mind-enhancing activities to attend in between shows.
English dream-pop band Slowdive has recently been added to the festival, which will by far be one of the most sought-out performances of the weekend.
Check out Desert Daze’s amazing lineup poster, featuring the latest additions and broken down by day. Single-day tickets are now available in addition to three-day general admission and VIP passes. Visit the festival’s website for more info.
Desert Daze is happening October 12th-14th, 2018 in Lake Perris, California.

October (thank god because we would all melt in the otherwise typical days of such shenanigans) will bestow the 6th installation of the transcendent music festival Desert Daze in Joshua Tree.
....
In part one, Jess saw Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, Ty Segall, and others… This is Part Two.
This is the mystical Desert Daze music festival that took place in the high desert of the wondrous Joshua Tree, California. Rock bands, artists, hippies and music enthusiasts gather here for a weekend of spiritual enlightenment and psychedelic tunes that make you wonder if we’re indeed in the middle of a revolution; if it’s 1969 all over again but this time evolved in a new paradigm shift of consciousness…and without the over-saturation of LSD and pot (though, of course, there was LSD and pot).
Since it first started in 2012 it’s been the land of octagon-shaped tents, tea ceremonies and tarot readings. It’s a village filled with artist instillations and children running a muck through cacti and tiny tents made out of tapestry and bird feathers. It’s Burning Man meets Coachella, sans pretentiousness and debauchery.
From what I experienced (and I immersed myself in all things DAZE), it was nothing but smiles, kindness and a deep, deep love and respect not only for the artists who graced us with their talent, but all the other humans who came together to create this special event that gave people one of the best weekends of our lives.
Saturday the highlights were definitely Frankie and the Witch Fingers, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Iggy Pop.
JJUUJJUU also rocked out (lead singer Phil Pirrone is the festival’s founder, I was soon to hear) to fans and friends while expressing a sincere appreciation to the crowd, thanking everyone from the bottom of his heart and saying what a big family everyone has turned out to be. His band was solid and pretty girls dressed in unicorn tassels and headgear danced in front of the stage to the raging tunes.
Iggy Pop, 60’s The Stooges frontman and who some would call the Godfather of Punk, came out in all his shirtless glory and opened up with (I mean of course) I Wanna Be Your Dog, spitting bottled water and flipping off the crowd and cameras. He was bold and delightful in his punk charm, right into Gimme Danger and The Passenger, then more Stooges’ classics like 1969. It’s sincerely hard to believe this man is in his 70’s. He had more energy than most of the bands combined, and I felt happy that I got to see him in that setting before…I mean who even knows anymore what can happen to these legends. Somewhere somebody must have kicked Iggy around some…and he’s kicking back.
To Be Concluded...

On the autumn days in the middle of October (thank god because we would all melt in the otherwise typical days of such shenanigans) will bestow the 6th installation of the transcendent music festival Desert Daze in Joshua Tree, California. It is known that J Tree (as us locals call it) has a somewhat spiritual energy about it, and musicians have been flocking there for years to get juiced on the wondrous inspiration that the desert embodies. So it’s fitting that some of the most eclectic artists in the game right now would be part of this special lineup. Music lovers camp onsite under the stars for this 4 day event.
While last year’s lineup was oodles of impressive (Washed Out, Deerhunter and The Black Angels, to name a few) this year will be equally scintillating. Thursday night John Dayer of On Sees and Troy Bootow of Death Hymn Number 9 will DJ, amongst other special guests. Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile and the Sea Lice will be kicking off Friday, playing tunes from their collaborative album that is expected to be released later this year. Adult Swim will present Things You’ve Never Seen in a Desert!, and Prettiest Eyes (a local LA band), Panda Bear, Ariel Pink, Liars, Boris, La Femme, The Budos Band, Lee Fields & the Expressions will follow, amongst others.
Saturday and Sunday will be filled with Iggy Pop, John Cale, Tortoise, The Gories, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton, Twin Peaks, Avey Tare, Mr. Elevator, JJUUJJUU, Mint Field, Spiritualized, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions, Eagles of Death Metal, Allah-Las, Atlas Sound, John Dwyer DJ set, Khruangbin, Cigarettes After Sex, Weyes Blood, L.A. Witch, Jerry Paper, Death Valley Girls, and Fever the Ghost. Weyes Blood will by far be the of the upmost importance for moi, as her latest album Front Row Seat To The Earth has been in heavy rotation for the past year.
Danny Perez, Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show, Billgazer, The Blindspot Project, and Cloaking will provide all three outdoor stages with projections all weekend long.
Sonic performances will run alongside panel speakers, curated daily film screenings, and the Mystic Bazaar’s daily schedule of metaphysical workshops.
The Institute of Mentalphysics, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Son, founded by Ding Le Mei, a westerner turned Tibetan Monk, is the oldest and largest spiritual retreat center in the western United States. The beautifully maintained grounds of garden paths, fountains, labyrinths and captivating architecture rest atop a rare confluence of three underground aquifers and a measurable magnetic field which causes a palpable energetic effect on those who visit. Audience members have the chance of staying in one of Wright’s on site cottages, or camping under the vast, twinkling desert sky. Limited in capacity to provide the kind of personal experience that just can’t be had at larger festivals, you don’t just go to Desert Daze, you profoundly experience Desert Daze.

We originally didn't see Minneapolis on the D'Angelo "The Second Coming Tour" 2015 US summer dates... but it would seem he finally added us because he was in the area (Chicago) for North Coast Music Festival. Of course, the First Avenue show is sold out. It should be noted that First Avenue is the only non-Festival date, so it should be a very special show.
If you haven't been keeping up, earlier this year, we wrote that Grammy Award winning and multi-platinum selling singer released Black Messiah (#1 on iTunes in 29 countries). This was a great comeback, having been away from the music industry for nearly 15 years.
Also in the news, D'Angelo's debut solo album Brown Sugar and sophomore Voodoo have been re-mastered and re-issued for the first time on 180g vinyl last Friday, August 21st.

Gardens & Villa recently shared a remix from multi-platinum, Grammy nominated producer N.O. Joe of "Domino" off of Gardens & Villa's Dunes, released earlier this year on Secretly Canadian.
N.O. Joe (I believe the "N.O." stands for New Orleans, because he is based out of Louisiana) has worked with everyone from Ice Cube to Lil Wayne,
and is a multi-platinum Grammy Nominated producer.
The secret origin of this collaboration about when G&V randomly met with N.O. Joe at SXSW 2014 at a late-night tacos eatery. The two became friends and out of this, the remix of "Domino".

I believe Wisconsin's Hugh Bob & The Hustle (headed by 'North Country' singer/songwriter Hugh Robert Masterson) will be appearing with Cracker this December 4th at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis. If you listened to our new podcast, you can clearly hear us singing to various Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven songs off the top of our heads.
Opening up the Minnesota show will be Hugh Bob & The Hustle, a band that's been compared to all the greats, including Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, John Prine, etc.
Check out his song "Butternut":
When Masterson play live, he's joined by The Hustle, a band comprising of bassist Nicholas Stuart, keyboardist Bradley Kruse, guitarist Quinn Scharber, and drummer Justin Krol.
Hugh Bob & The Hustle's other show will be at The Frequency in Madison on December 5, 2014.
Arrica Rose & The ... is essentially Arrica Rose, she's backed up by her band The ...'s (The Dots Dots Dots), and I'll bet that her latest album, La La Lost, is in reference to being lost in her residence of Los Angeles.
…
Remember Arrica Rose & the ...'s (The Dot Dot Dots)? They just released their latest album Wavefunction, out November 4th via pOprOck records.
The album was designed for vinyl, each side featuring a distinct mood. Rose explains, "We think of it as music for different occasions, a choose your own adventure kind of album." (Which incidentally, " Choose Your Own Adventure" one of the key creator R. A. Montgomery passed away November 9th).
Record label Razor & Tie had a breakout year at rock radio in 2014 with hits from The Pretty Reckless ("Heaven Knows" finishes the year as the #1 song at Active and Mainstream Rock), All That Remains and Starset making the label the most successful indie in the format and the second strongest rock label, second only to Warner Brothers.
One of the most ridiculous band names, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are wrapping up their UK tour in support of their latest LP I'm In Your Mind Fuzz (released November 11th on Castle Face in the US and Heavenly in the UK).
Remaining tour dates: Bodega Social Club, Nottingham (11/26) and Rough Trade East, London (12/01).
