Kween G and Desiree both came to Australia as refugees: Kween G’s family are from Uganda; and Desiree and her six brothers and sisters were shipped straight from the central american country of Belize to the Blue Mountains. The ladies met during rehearsals for the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics Games in 2000 and were instantly drawn together by a common passion for Hip Hop and a desire for similar destinies. From this first meeting they knew it was a path they wanted to share, and the KillaQueenz were born.
Their debut album, Sisterhood, showcases hard hitting rhymes over a fusion of Hip Hop, Reggae and Dance music, with their lead single, Double Up, receiving support from across the globe, including recognition in Europe through the addition of Double Up (KillaQueenz & South Rakkas Crew Feat. Lady Chan) to the MTV Base playlist. Click here to get a sample of the track. The album also features production by two of Australia’s most respected hip hop producers, Katalyst and M- ‐Phazes, as well as South Rakkas Crew. It also contains remixes from the album include work byYolanda Be Cool & DCUP of We No Speak Americano fame.
Having performed at a whole stack of Australian festivals (including performed Good Vibrations, Parklife and the Falls Festival); the word on the street is that if you haven’t seen them live, then it’s definitely something to put on your list of “must see” acts. With that, I believe I have created a perfect segue into the upcoming KillaQueenz 10th Anniversary @ Tone (16 Wenthworth Ave, Surry Hills, Sydney). It’s happening on the 22nd of October and as well as being able to check out the KillaQueenz themselves you’ll also be able to see DJ Sarah Love (UK), Just Blaze (USA), Josie Styles, Badezzy and Cyberthief (click here for the facebook event page).
Also….. for the lover of free stuff in all of us, you’ll receive a free copy of the KillaQueenz Sisterhood album at the door. Come and celebrate with the ladies (and one guy) at this one off event. Limited Tickets are on sale through Moshtix tomorrow (Thursday 14th) - $10 + Booking Fee. Bargain!
