So, The Kooks, that lovable 4-piece from Brighton, are about to release their third album, Junk of the Heart. Written and recorded in London and LA over the last 9-months, Junk of the Heart will be released on September 9th through EMI.
For sure, Junk of the Heart is thirteen tracks of well-rounded songs, but there are no instantly catchy tunes amongst the lot. I remember The Kooks as being purveyors of energy boosting tunes, one after the other, fuelling dancing (public and/or private) and purchasing of that i-really-shouldnt-have-had-that-last beer. Largely identical to past releases from The Kooks, Inside In/Inside Out (2006) andKonk (2008): standard indie-pop stylings. The difference is that Junk of the Heart is more mature sounding. The tracks are less short and sweet in nature and more well thought out, thick with sounds, obvious experimentation with new techniques and less “silly” lyrics (Jackie Big Tits from Inside In/Inside Out springs to mind as a past example).
It’s definitely worth a listen for existing fans of The Kooks as well as people who disliked them or didnt know them previously. Do it! In the meantime, have a look at the video for the first single, Is It Me.
