Craft Spells (a band mostly headed by Justin Vallesteros) recently announced that they were hitting the road with Julian Casablancas + The Voidz. To make the most of it, they've also added a few side additional tour dates, including a double show at the Echo in Los Angeles.

Recently they unveiled their video for "Twirl", which premiered on Noisey.

BLOSSOM facebook.com San Francisco's Blossom (not to be confused with Manchester's Blossoms) released their album Weirdspell earlier this Summer (July 2015). The band was originally formed in 2014 by Ryan, Jay, and Brian... later joined by Jacob in the start of 2015. They are influenced by bands from the late 80’s like the Cure and the Smiths, but also drawing inspirations from Sonic Youth, Cocteau Twins, and Dinosaur Jr.

SPELLING REFORM facebook.com Philadelphia indie rock/power pop band Spelling Reform semi-recently released their debut EP Driving Bell earlier in July on limited edition cassette (via Hope For The Tape Deck) and CD. The lead single is "The Boy Who Can't Read", which you can preview on Bandcamp. Spelling Reform is said to be inspired by all the favorite 90s band (Pavement, Guided by Voices, The Apples In Stereo, Pixies, etc).

New York City's Julian Casablancas + the Voidz are currently on tour in support of Tyranny, stopping by First Avenue in Minneapolis, last night, November 17th.

Ripper

Early turnout to the show was terrific for this very cold Monday evening. St Paul's 70s punk rock trio Ripper (not to be confused with the metal band Ripper), started show, playing songs like "Straight Cash" (a song about lighting sh** on fire) and "48 Hours" (a song about the time singer Danny Holden accidentally did meth instead of cocaine.)

Har Mar Superstar

Har Mar Superstar (aka Sean Tillmann) is taking a slight detour from his co-headline tour with Macaulay Culkin's The Pizza Underground (who we previously talked about), flying all the way from Las Vegas on Sunday to be here for one night at First Avenue. He flies back to California today to continue his tour... I admire his commitment! As Har Mar said on stage, he couldn't say no when Julian invited him to open the show... even though he performed with Ripper at the same venue just a few weeks ago.

We've seen Har Mar's show a few times now, and if you've never seen him, you're in for a treat. He's usually dressed from head to toe in clothing, but as he sings, he slow discard his garments. You first see him in double shirts and a large scarf... but by "www" (aka 'Why Why Why Woe Is Me') he's taking off clothing. By the time "Tall Boy" comes around, he's shirtless.

Most of the set was taken from his latest album Bye Bye 17 (out now on Julian Casablancas' Cult Records), and I have to say these new songs are incredibly soulful, like Jackson Five-era, and sometime with a dash of 70s funk, especially on "Prisoner" (of Love!).

Julian Casablancas + the Voidz came on stage to the sound of Los Saicos' "Demolicion", slightly later than advertised. I assumed they had gotten there earlier, but from the comment by Casablancas on stage, he made it sound like they had just gotten in from a rather long drive from Montana.

The set was declorated with old CRT computer displays and massive back light - which made photography nearly impossible. I think that's just the way Julian prefers it... singing and dancing in the dark.

Comparing the Voidz's music to Casablancas' previous band, the much be-loved The Strokes, it's a little different. Casablancas and the Voidz is more on the punk/DIY side of music. To draw comparison, I previously have seen Albert Hammond, Jr. (with Jake Bugg) and Hammond's music is more in line with what the Strokes were doing... which is understandable since he's the guitarist of the Strokes.

In typical Casablancas style, the band played straight through with only a few words thrown in here and there. It's only by the fifth song, "Where No Eagles Fly" did Casablancas declared, "Let's get this sh** started!", then as a way to introduce "Ize of the World" he commented, "You don't mind if we do a cover song, do you?" Considering that Casablancas and the Strokes are synonymous, I wouldn't even consider it a 'cover', even though technically, it is.

If you love the Strokes, you definitely need to check out Julian Casablancas + the Voidz on tour now for Tyranny. Har Mar Superstar will continue his tour in California with The Pizza Underground tomorrow at Pappy & Harriett's in Pioneertown... then to San Francisco's Bottom of the Hill for a two night residency.

Like many of you, I love The Strokes. There is this story I like to tell, some years ago, I got into a van full and no one knew each other... but when the driver put on the Strokes' Is This It album, everyone in the van was singing along.

Part of what made that album so classic is the music melodies of Albert Hammond, Jr., and the vocal styling of Julian Casablancas. Casablancas has been busy building an empire with his Cult Records, and recently released an album called Tyranny with his new band called Julian Casablancas + The Voidz.

What I love is that Casablancas is pricing the digital album for only $3.87. He realized there's no distribution, packaging, or physical cost and sells it accordingly. Fans will want to pick up the album on CD or vinyl anyway - and you can grab it on one of his tour dates below.

Danish electronic music producer Trentemøller will be in North America for his tour in support of Lost and Lost Reworks. The Lost album came out late last year on In My Room, and featured a lot of guests, including Low, Jonny Pierce from The Drums, Marie Fisker, Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead, Jana Hunter of Lower Dens, Ghost Society and Sune Wagner of The Raveonettes.

On 2014's Lost Reworks, the remixed EP of Lost, Trentemøller is joined by some carefully-chosen conspirators - Toydrum (aka James Griffith and Pablo Clements of UNKLE), The Knife collaborator Jenny Wilson, Unkwon, and T.O.M. And His Computer.
