Fans are Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga about Spoon coming back to town... The popular band sold out a double night at the Palace Theatre this upcoming week: September 15-16. Spoon's Hot Thoughts album came out in March on Matador Records.

Also worth noting is that Merge Records will be re-releasing a remastered Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga as a special double vinyl and album (with bonus CD & EP). The reissue will be in stores on October 20th... and if you get it from the Merge store, it comes bundled with a T-Shirt.

The first time I was meant to see Widowspeak, it was supposed to be in June 2012... but their van broke down driving from Chicago to Minneapolis. I eventually caught the Brooklyn band as headliner at the 7th Street in October of that year.

Widowspeak’s new album Expect the Best is out now and they are very proud of the new record... and they are very excited to play these new tracks on this 2017 tour (which starts tomorrow!)

We caught Dan Croll in November 2016 and noted, “UK folktronic singer-songwriter Dan Croll (who is one to watch as well) opened the evening with a criminally short but enjoyable thirty-five minute set of songs from his 2014 full length Sweet Disarray (Deram Records/Universal) as well as some new music set to appear on his next album.”

That “next album” is called Emerging Adulthood and it’s out now on Communion Group Ltd. Croll is touring in support of the new album and will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul this Saturday.

Hey, also Brooklyn’s The Dig will open. The Dig’s new album Bloodshot Tokyo is out now.

The first time I saw J. Roddy Walston and the Business, they had a very brief opening set for The Lumineers at Target Center in 2013, and they blew me away. The frenetic piano playing and showmanship made me a fan of J. Roddy Walston.

Since 2013, we've been following this band, catching them with Cage the Elephant in May 2014 and as headliner in September 2014, but unfortunately missed them in 2015 due to sold out The Current's 10th Anniversary concert at First Avenue.

Look for J. Roddy Walston & The Business to make their Austin City Limits debut this January 31st!

Trio J. Tex and the Volunteers' fifth album Old Ways vs New Days is coming out Friday, January 30th, 2015. I guess it is all part of the 'new days' since album releases usually traditionally fall on a Monday (for the UK) or Tuesday (for the US).

I believe J. Tex may actually be American... but currently spends his days in both Sweden and Denmark playing Americana blues and country music.

Tennessee rockers J Roddy Walston & the Business are currently touring around Austin City Limits, stopping by Minneapolis' Fine Line Music Café last night, September 15th.

Opening up for J Roddy were Pujol, from Nashville, Tennessee. The five-piece band (although for live shows, they only have four members) played tracks from their sophomore album Kludge (like "No Words") and their 2012 debut album United States of Being (like "Dark Knight In Shining Armor").

The story behind USoB is they went back, two years later, to re-record those original tracks, sometime adding new arrangements, now that the band have better resources. The album, now re-titled as Reunited States of Being, will be released as part of "Cassette Store Day" (yes, that's now a thing, in answer to Record Store Day), as well as digitally on September 27th, via Saddle Creek.

Pujol

From what I've heard of Pujol live, they are fun. Their music is very high-energy power punk, lyrically very fun and catchy. The band ended their set with "Youniverse", which they said was a song about "You and me and death and stuff."

Look for Pujol to return to Minneapolis again in October, with Screaming Females (and yes, I'm looking forward to this upcoming show).

To contrast the sold out show at the Fine Line Music Café, Rod Walston (of J Roddy Walston & the Business) commented, "The last time we were in Minneapolis, it was at breakfast time in front of 100 people." He was, of course, referring to The Current Morning Show on May 16, 2014, at 6am (!), the morning after his late night appearance with Cage the Elephant show at the Myth. Based on the head shaking of disapproval, that's an experience he doesn't want to repeat.

The first time I saw J Roddy Walston and the Business, they were the opening band for Lumineers at Target Center in 2013. They made a great impression on me, as Walston rocked the piano with great ease and confidence.

Setlist

The Tennessee-based band started off hard and fast with "Sweat Shock" and got the audience singing and foot-stomping along to the song. Almost all the crowd were singing along to their 2013 album Essential Tremors (ATO Records), which made for more than half of their setlist. Of course, all the older songs, such as "Don't Break The Needle" from their 2010 self-titled were also well received.

The band's two biggest hits "Take It As It Comes" and "Heavy Bells" were instant singalong with the crowd. Speaking of singing along, the band required the audience to sing the chorus to "Midnight Cry" as their set finale.

J Roddy Walston and the Business recently taped their live show for "Austin City Limits" for its 40th anniversary season for PBS on September 2nd. If you're in Austin, look for the band to appear at Austin City Limits for October 3rd and again October 10th. Everywhere else, keep an eye on the piano-rocking band coming through your town.

Foals rocked hard at First Avenue in Minneapolis last night to a group of young British rock music fans. … J Roddy Walston J. They sang rock and roll music like "Full Growing Man", "Don't Break The Needle", and "Sweatshop" …

What do Cleveland, Tennessee; Oxford, England; and Bowling Green, Kentucky have in common?

Seemingly nothing, but bands from those three cities and their different, yet well-matched-together sounds, combined forces for a crunchy, charged evening to a packed crowd at The Myth in suburban Maplewood, MN.

The show started with an all-too-brief set from Tennessee rockers, J Roddy Walston and The Business, in promotion of their breakthrough, Essential Tremors (ATO Records). The band, who has been around in some form for 12 years, has been receiving increasing buzz and considers Minneapolis one of its strongest markets; playing to previously sold out headlining gigs, a State Fair residency last year, and had even volunteered to play a radio gig the next morning in the early AM, which alone shows true commitment.

Bathed in mostly red lighting, Roddy’s energetic piano stomping and crowd inciting, were particularly lively on songs like opener ‘Sweat Shock’, ‘Heavy Bells’, and radio hit, ‘Take it As It Comes’. Be hopeful for another local headlining gig, so the band can properly stretch its musical wings in a longer set, again soon.

Foals

Oxford’s Foals then took the stage as co-headliners with the instrumental, ‘Prelude’, begun solo by guitarist Jimmy Smith, then joined by the rest of the five-piece, for the song’s roaring crescendo. Their third and latest album, Holy Fire (Warner Bros/Transgressive) could also be used to describe the incendiary hour-long performance that convinced anyone in the audience that may not have been familiar with the band’s catalog. Singer/guitarist Yannis Philippakis literally walked on the edge, as he hopped mid-song from the stage, onto the narrow side railing to balance his way from one end of the venue then back, as awe-stricken audience members watched.

“We’re Foals from the UK, and we’re glad in be here in Minnesota, or St. Paul, or wherever we’re at”, Philippakis began, before the band launched into the title track of its previous release, ‘Total Life Forever’ as the full crowd clapped along. Amidst the backdrop of striking cobra snakes coming forth from a buddha and the flashing strobe lights, things really kicked in with second single from the new record, ‘My Number’ and its bouncy synth beat.

The band’s sound is hard driving, percussive and beat driven, yet is also danceable with a shiny pop fringe. Sonically, the venue accentuated this perfectly, as the sound system at Myth remains one of the most impeccable in the metro area, with each channel heard clearly and well-suited to its room size. ‘Spanish Sahara’ slowed things briefly until the song could properly build, but the mostly younger crowd clapped along in unison, as the song reached momentum.

Dedicating it to “all the mothers out there”, ‘Late Night’ simmered like a rolling fog with its pleading “stay with me” refrain, and the band closed its hour with the lead single from Holy Fire, ‘Inhaler’. “We’re a long way from home, so it’s nice to get a welcome like this”, Philippakis said before the song’s distinctive guitar riff kicked off with a righteous groove and high-pitched vocals that accelerated into something very Soundgarden-esque, to end a very well-received set.

Matthew Shultz: Shirtless

With its own hour-long set, Kentucky’s Cage the Elephant took little time to err, uncage itself in a furious, headlong ride through 15 songs in only sixty minutes. Lead singer Matthew Shultz and band took to the stage more like they were walking in a park than playing to a mass of ready fans, but it was all a clever ruse as the southern band put on its rock game face after the quiet intro of opener, ‘Spiderhead’. Shultz moved like a mix of a younger Mick Jagger or Scott Weiland and rarely kept not moving, having dived into the crowd by the second song and returning shirt off for the remainder, by the third.

The band’s third and newest release, Melophobia (RCA Records) has pushed them into an even larger spotlight and the night seemed especially celebratory, as a result of being brother and guitarist Brad Shultz’ birthday. CTE’s sound is one of deceptively simple southern rock n’ roll – Kings of Leon on Red Bull, the Black Crowes sped up and smoking less, or even a less sludgy Molly Hatchet, but is distinctive enough to be individual as well as is completely memorable in concert, with Matt Schultz’ constant gyrating and interacting with the stagediving, overstuffed crowd.

“Let’s make it a special one, all right?” Schultz mentioned, referring to his brother’s birthday before starting the grungy ‘Aberdeen’ from previous album, Thank You, Happy Birthday. The mid-tempo and rhythmic ‘Take It or Leave It’ with its jangly, melodic guitar intro, would not have been out of place in Foals’ set, while early hit ‘Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked’ was a sing and clap-a-long for a main floor crowd that barely had room to move the crowd surfers above them, much less clap above their heads.

In response to the bevy of cellphones going up, Schultz implored, “I would like to spend a lot of time with you guys out there, but if you guys are trying to take pictures for Instagram… it doesn’t work. Instagram will be there tomorrow, we’ll have an experience tonight”, a feeling many bands in this age of modern immediate technology would no doubt, echo. Guitarist and birthday boy Brad Shultz mostly kept his head down, except to dive into the crowd himself and sidemen Daniel Tichenor, Jared Champion, and newest addition, guitarist Nick Bockrath all played with admirable passion, hair flying everywhere with body parts jerking to each beat.

The rockabilly tinged ‘It’s Just Forever’ morphed into ‘Teeth’, a song described by Schultz as about “feeling the energy of music changing”, which includes his own band planting a bigger footprint on things. Rock radio hit ‘Come a Little Closer’ finished the main set; the new album’s more-than-successful lead single has crossed over multiple radio formats and was inspired by the beauty of a Brazilian morning as seen from a São Paulo hotel window.

Packed crowd at The Myth

‘Shake Me Down’ with its very relatable and ultimately positive refrain of “Even on cloudy day, I’ll keep my eyes fixed on the sun” was a perfect encore opener and the revving, almost punk-like ‘Sabertooth Tiger’ took all the remaining energy of the already rabid crowd, for one last burst of unbridled release.

So what happens when Tennessee, England, and Kentucky mix? Spontaneous combustion obviously… and the audience couldn’t be more pleased to join along.

Moms, you must have the best children, if they bring you to this Milk Carton Kids show at the Dakota Jazz Club for Mother's Day on Sunday.

For the 'kids', they will enjoy the music, for the mothers, they get to enjoy some great food at the swanky restaurant.

On a serious note, I have spent $75+ on dinner at the Dakota and it was well spent. Delicious.

Matt Pond: A decade of Emblems

Matt Pond (PA), the NY-based collective formed by the Philadelphia native, hits the road again with Ohio folk-pop openers The Lighthouse and The Whaler, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of his seminal fifth album, Emblems (Altitude Records) and what Paste Magazine described as “a lush, haunting collection of superbly crafted chamber pop” and what CMJ said was "an ideal record for the mature indie-rock fan with a weakness for string sections."

Thought by many as their favorite of Pond’s 8 LPs and 8 EPs, the tour is a rare chance to see that work performed in its entirety, along with selected new music including cuts from last year’s The Lives Inside the Lives In Your Hands (BMG) and other favorites.

Pond has been busy of late, releasing Skeletons and Friends via Noisetrade and working on another new full-length, via a Pledge Music campaign. Expect a laid back look into the past, as well as one that looks ahead, from this seasoned indie veteran.

Tera Melos are currently touring in support of X'ed Out, which came out April 16th, 2013, via Sargent House.

Tera Melos are currently a three-piece band (Nick Reinhart, Nathan Latona, John Clardy), playing rock, jazz, and "unconventional song structure."

The Sacramento-based band will headline some dates after supporting The Dillinger Escape Plan in early May.

Within a span of a year, The Lumineers went from playing the tiny 250-capacity 7th Street Entry to the nearly 20k-capacity at the Target Center, in Minneapolis. To best sum it up, singer Wesley Schultz said that they played the 7th Street Entry and dreaming of the day that they can play the main First Avenue room… but only to go beyond that to the basketball stadium that the Target Center is known for, "When I was young, I wanted to be a basketball player. Never would imagine I'd step on the courts like this."

Opening up the show were two of the Lumineers' favorite bands: J Roddy Walston and The Business and Cold War Kids. Apologies to both bands, photography access was limited to just the Lumineers, per the venue's request.

J. Roddy Walston played piano for his entire set, his band The Business did a great job in playing and singing backup. They sang rock and roll music like "Full Growing Man", "Don't Break The Needle", and "Sweatshop". The latter required a singalong/audience participation.

We've covered Cold War Kids a few times, the latest was just last month. I didn't attend that last show, but I am assuming setlist was similar, but probably truncated due to opening slot time limit. They seem pleased to be playing new songs like "Miracle Mile", "Loner Phase", and "Jailbirds", from Dear Miss Lonelyhearts (Downtown Records) . I think where the band did the best are with the older/popular songs, including "Hang Me Up To Dry", "Something Is Not Right With Me", "Hospital Beds", and their set closer, "Saint John".

As for the Lumineers, no surprises here: they basically played their entire debut album. Setlist was similar to their 2012 set, but obviously tracks were switch around and they added a new song called "Duet" (obviously a duet with Lumineers' cellist Neyla Pekarek).

Every song played ("Submarines", "I Ain't Nobody's Problem", "Flowers in Your Hair", "Ho Hey", "Classy Girls", "Charlie Boy", set closer "Morning Song", etc.) were all sung along by the audience, who clearly know and love the debut album.

The best song, personally for me, was the Bob Dylan cover, "Subterranean Homesick Blues". Other highlight was when the band entered in the sea of people to play a few songs. Singer Wesley Schultz was clearly upset about all the cellphones that immediately went up to record the band as soon as they entered the crowd. Shultz reminded people "no audio or video recordings are allowed" to deaf ears. In the end, Shultz just said, "fine", and started "Elouise" and "Gun Song".

Encores were: "Flapper Girl", Talking Heads' "This Must be the Place (Naive Melody)", and closing out the encore was "Big Parade".

So, it's official. The Lumineers are massive. This is pretty amazing for a band that started playing to a handful of people just last year. I'm looking forward to see how the band will grow over the next few years.
