Toronto's Austra stopped by the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis on Sunday, September 1st, 2013.

Opening up for all the North American dates is DIANA, lead by singer Carmen Elle, who we last saw in Minneapolis with Tegan & Sara.

The band is currently on tour with Austra in support of their debut album Perpetual Surrender, which came out August 20th on Jagjaguwar.

As expected, Austra played songs like "What We Done?" and "Forgive Me", from their latest Domino/Paper Bag album Olympia which came out earlier this Summer.

To best sum up their sound, Brody from W♥M writes, "Fans of Florence + the Machine and Grimes will love a performance from this rising star. I caught her at Fun Fun Fun Fest a few years ago in Austin, Texas, and she's got the wardrobe, face paint, dancers!"

Unlike other stationary music festivals like SXSW or Glastonbury, the Warped Tour (or rather Vans Warped Tour) is one of those rare travelling music festivals. Traditionally, the Warped Tour feature more punk-rock music, but it would seem that they are opening up the lineup to feature more diversity (as seen in one of our spotlight on Wallpaper. below).

If you're into skateboarding, trick bicycles, and other extreme sports and love punk music, it's really the place to be. We are covering the Warped Tour this year in Shakopee, Minnesota, at Canterbury Park, so check back next week for a report.

Overwhelmed by the nearly 150 bands on the Warped Tour lineup for 2013? Fear not, let us spotlight on some of the bands (NOTE: not all bands mentioned here will be covered):

WALLPAPER.

Oakland, CA based artist Wallpaper. will be playing this year’s Vans Warped Tour in Shakopee, MN on July 21st. Wallpaper.'s frontman Ricky Reed has been popping up on music spotlights such as MTV and Entertainment Weekly for his “awesomely doltish ode to Saturday-night oblivion (Entertainment Weekly).”

The band’s debut LP, Doodoo Face (Eenie Meenie Records) was released in 2009 to much praise for it’s party anthem sound. Wallpaper. drops their debut album Ricky Reed is Real (Epic Records) on July 23rd.

SLEEPING WITH SIRENS

Sleeping with Sirens highest chart-topper album to date is their third album, Feel, which came out April 23, 2013, on Rise Records.

Sleeping with Sirens is known mostly for lead singer Kellin Quinn's ability to reach low/baritone-esque vocals styling.

Also, although the Floridian band is known for its post-hardcore music, you'd be interested to note that the second single from Feel, "Alone", features rapper MGK. Alt-Press commented on the song as actually making sense: "seems bizarre on paper—actually gels perfectly and could totally be a crossover smash." Not sure how the band will perform that song live (if at all), regarding the rapping portion.

BRING ME THE HORIZON

Sheffield's Bring Me the Horizon is a metalcore band, currently signed to RCA Records (but is exclusively distributed in the U.S. by Epitaph Records). The band stole their name from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Sempiternal is Bring Me the Horizon's fourth album, which came out on April Fool's day to a variety of formats: Standard, Deluxe, and Digital Standard and Digital Deluxe. For fans and collectors alike, it was a bit of a nightmare to track down all the songs, for instance, the Digital Deluxe includes "Join the Club" and "Deathbeds" while the Physical Deluxe containing these extra tracks: "Join the Club", "Chasing Rainbows" and "Deathbeds" (US Physical Deluxe had "Skank", displacing "Chasing Rainbows").

Florida's Go Radio is currently on the Warped Tour in support of their sophomore album, Close the Distance, out now on Fearless Records.

They must really love Warped Tour, because the band previously toured with Warped in 2011 for their Lucky Street album.

The band came about when singer Jason Lancaster left Mayday Parade (Derek Sanders took over as lead vocals for Mayday Parade) five years ago to start Go Radio. Since then, Go Radio has found success with Lucky Street debut at #77 on the US Billboard 200 Charts (top 20 on the Rock, Alternative, and Independent charts).

NEVER SHOUT NEVER

Never Shout Never is from Missouri, with five full-length album: their latest is called Sunflower, which just came out last week (July 2).

Originally the band started as nevershoutnever! as the project from Christofer Ingle at the tender age of 16 in 2007. Then it was NeverShoutNever!, and now, simply known as Never Shout Never.

By 2009, Ingle signed with Warner Bros. Records (under their Sire label) and released The Summer, and steadily released music since then.

Never Shout Never will be playing the main stage on the Vans Warped Tour all summer. If you can afford it, Never Shout Never will be hosting a special VIP behind-the-scene music workshop at all the Warped Tour dates. These VIP workshop is strictly limited to 50 people at each show.

Sydney's New Empire is returning to the U.S. to join this year's Vans Warped Tour. The three piece (Jeremy Fowler, Kyle Lane and Kale Kneale) play pop punk tunes, much like their idols Taking Back Sunday.

The Australian band's last release, Symmetry landed #39 on the Australian Charts, even gaining top 4 Australian artists on Channel V and had their song "One Heart/A Million Voices" featured in the 2012 Olympic Games.

Trivia: The band was previously called Freedom1.

New Zealander Gin Wigmore just wrapped up her U.S. tour dates with Phillip Phillips and has jumped on the Warped Tour.

Currently signed to Mercury Records, her music was recently used in the Heineken/Skyfall cross-promotional TV spots (“Man Like That”) and the Guinness Black Lager ads (“Black Sheep”), which is taken from her sophomore album, Gravel & Wine.

If you get a chance to see her live, you can find out why London's Sunday Mirror is calling Gin Wigmore "New Zealand’s best export".

Snowden at the Sound Gallery, Minneapolis

Last week Austin, TX based band Snowden made a stop at the Sound Gallery on their No One In Control Tour for their newly released album No One In Control (Serpents and Snakes Records; The Kings of Leon’s record label). Local band Story of the Sea opened the show.

STORY OF THE SEA

The night started out in the social area of the Sound Gallery, while Story of the Sea getting set up in the next room of the loft style venue. Once everyone was ushered into the concert area of the venue the 3 member band made up of Adam Prince (guitar/lead vocals), John McEwen (bass/keyboards/vocals), and Ian Prince (drums) began playing their 10 song set. Soon after they completed their set, everyone eventually went back to the social area.

Up next was the headliner Snowden, the band formed in 2003. They played a 11 song set to a happily awaiting intimate crowd. Their gloomy, punk rock sound filled the room. No One in Control is Snowden’s second release; their previous being Anti-Anti (Jade Tree Records) released in 2006.

The band concluded their No One In Control Tour just this past Thursday (6/27).

Eleanor Friedberger (The Fiery Furnaces) is currently on the road to support her second solo album, Personal Record (out now on Merge Records). The band stopped in at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis last night.

CASSANDRA JENKINS Jonathan Wirkus

Cassandra Jenkins opened the show, but the entire band (some featuring members from the band Icewater), would later re-appear as Eleanor Friedberger's live band. Her brief ethereal folk set consists of "Blood", "Up in Flames", "Caterpillar", "Motorcycle Mary", "Sunchasters", "The Bird" and "Arrow", many of those songs appeared on her debut EP released last month.

TEEN Jonathan Wirkus

Brooklyn-based TEEN followed Jenkins. The indie rock band formed in 2012 is composed of lead Kristina "Teeny" Lieberson, her two sisters Lizzy and Katherine, and friend Jane Herships. The show was filled with loud guitar riffs, echo-y vocals and a bit of a 60’s vibe.

Remember how we didn't recognize a few songs from them the first time they were at the 400 Bar last year? Those two "mysterious" songs are from their recently released Carolina (Carpark Records), which for this set, TEEN played every tracks from the EP ("Carolina", "Circus", "Cannibal", "Glass Cage", "Paradise").

If you love lyrics, as much as I do, you'll fall in love with Eleanor Friedberger's latest novelette songs. Her songs are gobful of lyrics, and it's truly lovely to hear her recite them to a musical background. Half her set are were taken from the new album, Personal Record ("Stare at the Sun", "My Own World", "I'll Never Be Happy Again", "When I Knew", "Other Boys", and the set closer, "She's a Mirror") with the other half from her Last Summer album.

Encore was interesting. This was more like a double encore, with the first part having Friedberger by herself singing "I Am the Past" and "Echo or Encore". Both "quieter" songs are from Personal Record, which was co-written by musician/novelist Wesley Stace (aka John Wesley Harding). The second part of the encore featured the entire band, for "Singing Time" and "My Mistakes".

So, if you love stories in your songs, check out Eleanor Friedberger's music. Her latest, Personal Record, just came out last week (June 4th) on Merge Records. She's currently on tour in support of the record.

Caroline Smith & the Good Night Sleeps @ Amsterdam Bar 6/7/13

Caroline Smith & the Good Night Sleeps headlined the show at Amsterdam Bar and Hall in St. Paul last night. Bomba de Luz opened the show, and the show was in partnership with the MN Music Coalition.

BOMBA DE LUZ

Bomba de Luz vocalist Lydia Hoglund rocked the show with her fiery voice and folk rock sound. The crowd responded well to the show, and at one point they even sang along to the chorus when prompted by Hoglund.

Caroline Smith & the Good Night Sleeps started out the show introducing two new song to the crowd, which the crowd was elated to hear. Before the band stepped onto stage the crowd started blowing up orange balloons and writing messages on them, some of them proclaiming their love for the band. Caroline Smith’s beautiful voice and her bubbly personality made you embrace her even more.

Most of you already know that I like ADULT., who caught my attention during that whole Electroclash thing that Ladytron was at the forefront. I noticed that ADULT. just released their fifth album, The Way Things Fall, on Ghostly International, last month (May 14th).

FADER described the album as, "wonky synth lines and smiting, deadpan vocals on their excellent return to the studio."

For those of you who are fans of both folk and hip hop, look no further than the unlikely duo of Kimya Dawson and Aesop Rock, writing music as The Uncluded. They will bring their unique fusion of both genres to Minneapolis on June 30 at the Cedar Cultural Center.

I didn't quite know what to expect upon my first listen of their debut album 'Hokey Fright', but I can attest to the fact that the coupling of the two musicians is very effective in its artistic goal. Aesop's rapid-fire spitting of clever rhymes mixed with Dawson's vocals showcasing her whimsical lyrical take on storytelling, as well as her homespun flavor of guitar stylings, is enough to intrigue me to want to see them live. Surely they are doing something completely new and fresh and I do not think they will disappoint. Give the album a listen and buy a ticket here for $15.

Remember Eve? She was the only woman in Ruff Ryders' crew (featuring DMX, The Lox and Drag-on), Eve stood tall with the boys. She went on to win a Grammy and who sold over eight million copies of her first three albums.

Well, over ten years later, she's just released her fourth album, Lip Lock, today, June 3rd, 2013 (I believe this is the UK release date, the US release was last month in May).

When asked about why she chose that name for the album, she said, "I call the new record Lip Lock because it's about locking the game back down." She went on to talk about her life and situation now, "I'm not trying to relive any moments of my life, I'm in a new place in my life. I'm almost a new artist - 2013 is a year you will see more sides of me than ever before, this is just the start!".

This duo (Devon Welsh and Matthew Otto) is currently on the road.… Last night Majical Cloudz and Youth Lagoon played the Fine Line Music Café in downtown Minneapolis. New York-based band Majical Cloudz opened up the show, and their performance was something that I personally have never experienced before. MAJICAL CLOUDZ Vocalist Devon Welsh came onto stage simply dressed, and I was not prepared for what I was about to experience. With only one stage light on (he even asked to have less light on stage, though the light appeared to be dimmed to its limit), and a quiet audience, he started out the show after a quick introduction. With his piercing eyes with dilated pupils, his presence left you feeling you were seeing a very dark, uncensored side of his thoughts. After the third song, Devon announced he was going to take off his boots much to the bewilderment of the crowd, and after the next song he took off his socks. An audience member congratulated them for their upcoming release of their new album Impersonator (Matador Records) that drops this Tuesday (5/21). Devon also dedicated a song to Youth Lagoon whom he has been touring with, and they stated that they were going to drive all day back to NYC the following day. One of the most unexpected events last night was when he invited the crowd on stage to sit with him as he sung the last song. The audience was confused at first, and then became eager to make their way on stage. After the small stage was filled with people, he began to sing and finished up the show this way. Youth Lagoon followed Majical Cloudz on the stage, and vocalist Trevor Powers changed up the visuals from the minimalist look that Majical Cloudz had. With a lit back drop and lights flashing and moving about, the change of base was nice to see. They also dedicated a song to their tourmates Majical Cloudz. Youth Lagoon's latest album, Wondrous Bughouse, is out now (03/05) via Fat Possum Records. The Canadian electronic band Dragonette made a stop at the First Ave Mainroom Wednesday night along with Australia's The Presets and the LA-based DJ’s Classixx.

From the time Dragonette came on stage to when they left, they were a highenergy electro-pop powerhouse. Playing songs mostly off their Bodyparts album (Universal Music Canada) released this past September, and mixing in some songs off their past albums they gave a great performance.

Martina Sorbara (vocals) danced throughout the whole show, and her powerful energy was felt through the crowd and they were jumping right along with her. During "Hello", the crowd belted every line of the song she did with French producer/DJ Martin Solveig.

THE PRESETS

They will be continuing their co-headlining US tour with The Presets. The Australian duo broke into the mainstream with their #1 album, Apocalypso, spawning six hit singles: "My People", "This Boy's in Love", "Talk Like That", "Yippiyo-Ay", "If I Know You" and "Kicking and Screaming". The Presets may have another hit album on their hands with their third full-length album, Pacifica, especially after their single, "Ghosts", was recently awarded "Single of the Year" (Reader's Choice) for the 4th annual Australian Rolling Stone Awards.
