Friday we have Wesley Stace (formerly known by his stage name, John Wesley Harding) at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. He'll probably be doing songs from his Self-Titled…
Opening up for Coulton was extra bushy bearded John Roderick from the Long Winters, who took full advantage of the Shakespearean set piece (the background courtesy of Roman Holiday).
…
When Todd Barry took the stage he wasted no time playfully insulting "Alex Kroll, or Koll, whatever one that was” and moving right into a deadpan assessment of the visible audience for everyone’s amusement. …
The show was advertised as Gary Louris and Friends. For those that don't know Gary, he is one of the founding members of the Jayhawks. They have a new CD coming in September, which involves the reunion with Mark Olson. …
Talk to random people at the festival, most of them heard of Haley Bonar and was there to see her. Except they thought she should be one of the headliner, only she was early (3pm). …
"May I present the cabinet: its contents, and its discontents," starts Wesley Stace's Cabinet of Wonders show at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis last night, October 11th. If you're not familiar with the Wesley Stace's Cabinet of Wonders show, this is not the typical rock concert, but more like a variety show. There's book readings, there's poetry, there's comedy, and, of course, there's music. Bottom line, the show is really an excuse for Wesley Stace (formerly John Wesley Harding) to gather his friends and colleagues on the stage!
After a poetry introduction to all the players in the cabinet, Stace singled John Roderick to talk a little about being 'the last man [not] on the plane' and how he went over to the '400 Club' to realized it was now a converted Islamic mosque (the 400 Bar closed its door late December last year).
Wesley Stace, with his live band The English UK, then kicked off his three-song set, starting with his Eleanor Friedberger collaborated song, "When I Knew". The latter two songs were from the latest album Self-Titled ("it's called Self-Titled, because it is…"). Stace explained that these new songs were all true, then quickly announced that 'Jane' in "Goodbye Jane" was not, in fact, 'Jane'. As for "A Canterbury Kiss", this was about the coolest girl he's ever met. The real moral of that song is that you should never send the subject their song until it's been recorded and published.
Todd Boss was next, reading three love (one 'lust') poems from his books: "The Hush of the Very Good", "Constellation", and "Feast".
Next was Marc Perlman, from the Jayhawks, played three covers, two of which were Moby Grape songs ("It's A Beautiful Day Today" and "I Am Not Willing"). He explained that he never listened to Moby Grape when he was young, it's only recently that he's absolutely fell in love with them.
Author Laurie Lindeen, formerly from Zuzu's Petals, read an excerpt from her forthcoming book called "My Boyfriend's Dead". It's not a zombie book, but about a 12-year-old girl growing up in the 70s.
HALEY BONAR
Haley Bonar did three songs, the first was "Heaven's Made For Two". She had more songs written for an upcoming album, but they're not quite ready yet. In the meantime, she did "Bad Reputation" and a cover of Melanie's "Brand New Key". The cover song, as explained by Stace, was possibly more famous for being re-made into "The Combine Harvester" by The Wurzels. The way Stace over-pronounced the band name, you can tell he had a distaste, if you'll forgive the pun, for this drinking novelty band. At one point, he even compared their same-songs to Chubby Checker's various "Twist" songs. You know what? I'm going hazard a guess that no one in America's heard of The Wurzels, but that didn't stop people from laughing.
TODD BARRY
Speaking of laughing, my personal highlight of the show was Todd Barry, mostly because of his quick-witted improvisation. Barry must have a habit of going over his set time, so a clock was brought on stage for him to reference (although he promised he was going over "10 seconds" because he loved us so much). As we previously mentioned, Barry is very deadpan in his deliveries. His material consisted of some crowd work (like when the audience had a second wave of laugh and a finicky cat), but also prepared jokes (if you can call it 'prepared').
WESLEY STACE AND JOHN RODERICK
John Roderick, from the Long Winters, was last seen in Minneapolis with Jonathan Coulton. He actually seems like he could also do stand-up, telling us about that one time someone landed on his head (feet first) at the running of the bulls in Spain. Roderick did "Not Moving To Portland" and, I think, "Same Song".
Roderick ended his three-song set with The Long Winters' "Scared Straight", a song that's ten years old now.
After Wesley Stace read a random excerpt from his upcoming book Wonderkid, to be published February 2014 via Overlook Hardcover, Gary Louris, also from the Jayhawks, came on to sing three songs, ending with a The Jayhawks' "Tailspin". What made "Tailspin" so delightful was that it featured the other Jayhawks, Marc Perlman on mandolin, but Stace would medley in Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages" in the middle of the song.
Stace and his band would then continue with a fitting John Wesley Harding song called "Making Love To Bob Dylan". Shortly afterwards, everybody on the bill came back on stage for Kevin Ayers' "Religious Experience" (aka "Singing a Song in the Morning") for a satisfying finish.
Wesley Stace's Cabinet of Wonders show is currently on tour, I'm encouraging people to go to multiple shows, because I can tell that every show is entertaining and unique.
Wesley Stace's Self-Titled is out now on Yep Roc Records.

Chicago's Cave was a little more my thing. Let me preface this by announcing that their music is not "drone". I don't know why the band is labeled as such, they sound to me like classic instrumental surf rock..…
For Rocktober week two, here are the shows coming to Minneapolis.
Starting on Sunday, we have Cave. The "none-drone" band will be out in support of their new album Threace (coming out October 15th on Drag City).
I've seen this Chicago band before, opening up for Chelsea Light Moving (Thurston Moore) and was rather impressed with their ability to build up their instrumental rock.

Today (May 25), NPR is debuting "Cabinet of Wonders", a six-episode hour long radio program hosted by John Wesley Harding …
The first time I saw John Wesley Harding, he was a guest host for MTV's 120 Minutes in the very early 90s, and he did this amazing song called "Ordinary Weekend" live on an acoustic guitar, standing in the dark. Somehow JWH wrote this epic story about a guy who was down on his luck who messed up on this 'underground' job and ultimately paid the price. I just love his knack for telling little stories within the three-minute song genre.
Last year, he resurfaced Cabinet of Wonders, an NPR short 6-episode hour long radio program starring John Wesley Harding. It's not all music, instead there's interview, book reviews, and even poetry.
I don't know when it happened, but I would say it's recently, John Wesley Harding declared that he will be known as Wesley Stace now. By the time I heard that, he's already co-written Eleanor Friedberger's new record and written some books.
Changing stage name back to his given name probably made a whole lot of sense, but having already established himself as folk singer John Wesley Harding for 25 years, it's hard for me to associate or identify with the name of Wesley Stace. I suppose, over time, we'll look back and laugh at this whole Wesley Stace vs John Wesley Harding debate.
With that said, Wesley Stace's new Self-Titled album just came out this week (September 17th). He has announced a string of tour dates in support of the new record, but also taking his variety program Cabinet of Wonders with him! Dates and details below:

“I wish that I was in Minneapolis”, Britt Daniel sings on the track ‘Would That Not Be Nice’ and his wish comes true as Divine Fits embarks on an upcoming U.S. Tour that includes Minneapolis on one of its stops, before hitting larger festival shows at Coachella and Bonnaroo later this summer.
The indie ‘super group’, formed from parts of Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs, New Bomb Turks, and the on-hiatus Spoon, is promoting their debut release, ‘A Thing Called Divine Fits’ (out now on Merge Records), produced by brilliant sonic twiddler Nick Launay who has worked with Nick Cave, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire, and countless others since the late 70s.
Spoon frontman Britt Daniel and Handsome Furs/Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner share roughly half the vocal duties and the 11-song album, per the band’s website, “covers such topics as the death of true love, hitchhiking, cocoa butter, emotional distance, what happens when the curtain drops, and Minneapolis, MN.”
The April 4 date at the Varsity Theater is long sold out- a testament to the area appreciating the album’s inspiration in anticipation of what will no doubt be a very memorable show that will have locals talking, long after the performance.

Eleanor Friedberger (the half of the duo The Fiery Furnaces) announced that she will be hitting the road in support of her forthcoming, second solo album, Personal Record, coming out June 4th, 2013 (UK will have to wait until June 10th) on Merge Records.
Interesting to note that the new record is co-written with musician/novelist Wesley Stace, featuring love songs - but not really necessary about romantic love. Eleanor explains, "They’re also love songs to music: how you feel on stage when you do something spontaneous and it works, how you feel when you hear someone sing a song for the first time, what it's like to watch a friend perform, how you can feel close to someone you barely know because you both happen to love the same record, or playing the same song forty times in a row, not being able to rest until you own every song recorded by your favorite singer, or every version of your favorite song."
Touring with Friedberger will be live musicians Cassandra Jenkins and members of Icewater. Jenkins and Icewater will also act as third opener on selected dates. All North American dates will feature TEEN as support.

Here are some music podcasts that I listened to recently.
As you know, to get through the day or when I'm bicycling, I like to listen to people talking about music and technology. I don't really like listening to the other music podcasts, which are essentially playlists or mixes by DJs.
We also do our own podcast called W♥M Radio, which is a mixture of the staff here talking about music with occasional interviews. We are recording #137, hopefully, this Sunday. I am bias, of course, but I like our little radio show.
Anyway, all of these podcasts are FREE, so there's no excuse to not try these out.
Today (May 25), NPR is debuting "Cabinet of Wonders", a six-episode hour long radio program hosted by John Wesley Harding. I actually really like him, I think he's quite clever … and, of course, I cannot get enough of his accent.
It's a variety program, which sounds like it was recorded live in front of an audience. In the first episode, "A Starbucks... Where The Starbuck Used To Be", Harding performs that title song and introduced all his guests with … rhymes. Wow, right? Like some sort of rhyming demon.
Guests include author Haley Tanner, musicians Punch Brothers, author Sarah Vowell, comedian Eugene Mirman, etc. You can see the guests aren't necessary music-related.
Anyway, I had a pretty hard time finding out the RSS feed, so if you want to grab it, it's located at npr.org/rss/podcast.php?id=510300.
With Episode #2 just launched, Matt Pinfield sits down with Jack White. I actually haven't listened to the latest interview, but I did listen to #1 with Mark Ronson. It was kind of fun to hear this British guy reflects on how he grew up with old soul records and his brother/sister relationship with Amy Winehouse.
I laughed when I heard Ronson explains how Winehouse was brutally honest. He'll play her a song and 3 seconds in, she's like "Turn it off, don't make me listen to this anymore."
NOTE: Ronson mentioned This Day In Music app, which I reviewed.
If you can't get enough of Pinfield's know-it-all brain, you should listen to us chat about music.
Tired of the BBC blocking all the good podcasts because you don't live in the UK? Thankfully, the Guardian's doing an excellent job on their podcasts.
Music Weekly is the Guardian take on music by hosts Alexis Petridis and Kieran Yates (with regular staff rotations). They do random band interviews, talk about the news, and the production is very professional (lots of music excerpts).
The latest episode "Gravenhurst's favourite folk – and a fistful of festivals" (May 25th), is about the festival season. They talk to Sam Richards, the editor of the Guide's 2012 festival special.
I don't know what a "Murfie" is, but it looks like a record store based out Madison, Wisonsin. They just celebrated their one-year anniversary.
They have a podcast, and I did listen to the latest one, "Interview with Enabler". While metal/hardcore isn't really my cup of tea, I was more bothered by the "cell phone" audio recording. Just to make sure, I listened to "Interview with Charlie Parr", and he also had that "cell phone" audio quality. It just doesn't sound good. But hey, interviewer Kayla sounded wonderful.
I browsed through their podcast, it seems they only do them every so-often, like once a month.
Book publisher Hal Leonard Performing Arts Publishing Group just launched their Onstage and Backstage podcast. The show will feature authors and celebrity guests discussing the performing arts. The podcast covers theatre, film, television, bands, classical music, opera, and today's music industry.
I grabbed the latest episode, "A (Profound) Guide to Beethoven's Chamber Music!" to check out. I can tell by the stutters of "uh" and "ums" that Victor Lederer, author of Beethoven's Chamber Music: A Listener's Guide, doesn't do public speaking (or he was super nervous).
It's still a new podcast, so it can only improve… but I do recommend some editing in post.
