Hey guys, here are some bands that I may be going to see live in April. The theme is they are playing either The Cedar or The Varsity Theater (these are my two favorite venues to see music)
So anyway... I usually try and at least do some research on the bands I’m seeing to get an idea of what to expect. Below are bands I’ve done preliminary research on:
JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN

I'm really looking forward to seeing Joan Wasser this month. Her latest record, The Deep Field reached the UK Top 40. Admittedly barely clinging on number forty, but still quite a feat.
She's great, her credits runs like a who's who of storytelling musicians, including Lou Reed, Sheryl Crow, Elton John, Antony and the Johnsons, Rufus Wainwright and Lloyd Cole.
Her album, The Deep Field will be out this April 12th (but I believe may be available digitally and internationally now?) on PIAS records. The album is already getting rave reviews from all the critics, including NME calling Joan as Police Woman as "a force to be recorded with again".
If you want to check out her music, she's giving away a free sampler (three songs), including "The Magic", on her official website.
Below is her US tour dates.
FREELANCE WHALES

UPDATE: The Minneapolis show is canceled. I can only speculate that UK band Foals have decided to cut short their tour.
I missed the Freelance Whales the last time they were in Minneapolis, so I'm happy to see that they are returning, and playing at The Varsity Theater this April 25th. They are playing the same night opposite Junip at the Cedar Cultural Center, which I'm pretty sure I won't be seeing Junip this time around (this is their third time in Minneapolis and they're not granting photos or press). Well it made my decision a lot easier knowing that Freelance Whales is here to save the day.
Apparently, starting last month, they band's music, "Generator First Floor" was a free iTunes download and the song was also featured in the new Starbucks espresso commercial, airing nationally! So, yeah, they're getting a ton of buzz!
Their debut album, Weathervanes, is being re-released in an extended deluxe edition exclusively on iTunes on April 5th. Yep, national tour below:
MOVITS!

A few nights ago on the Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert endorsed this Swedish band Movits!. Their new album, Out of my Head will be available for streaming on his website, www.colbertnation.com until April 5th, 2011. Apparently, Colbert’s been into this band since 2009, when he interviewed them and they performed their song "Fel del av gården".
What's funny about Movits! is the way Colbert describes them: "the only Swedish jazz hip hop fusion band". I have downloaded their album, Out Of My Head, for review and just a quick listen, it sounds very "carnival" with a bit of swing and jazz. The album comes out in April 2011 on Slimstyle Records.
Anyway, they should be lots of fun seeing live. Here are the dates I've been given:
THE LUYAS
www.theluyas.com
The Luyas are from Montreal, Canada, and has been around since 2006, with already a second album under their belt called Too Beautiful to Work on Dead Oceans Records last month.
If you want to check out what The Luyas sound like, you can hear their title track "Too Beautiful to Work" on pitchfork. Apparently Owen Pallett and Arcade Fire's Sarah Neufeld gueststars on the album.
I really like trumpets and horns, so I’m very excited that the band uses non-standard instruments, including a French horn and bells.
They are coming to Minneapolis to play the beautiful Cedar Cultural Center venue, and boo to Liam Finn (son of Crowded House's Neil Finn) for skipping Minneapolis!
