Even with a few tickets left to sell, the Varsity Theater was full last night for Atlas Genius’s return to Minneapolis. On their fourth visit in about a year, they were last here in June at the Fine Line supporting the February release of their first full album When it Was Now. They followed much of the same formula for the set list (if it works, why fix it?) particularly in the last half of the set when “Don’t Make a Scene,” “Through the Glass,” and “Trojans,” rounded out the set before encore.

Atlas Genius

Encore was “Centered on You,” and “Electric.” This time, the crowd was waiting for the encore, whereas the Fine Line back in June started clearing after "Trojans", no doubt expecting their biggest hit to be the show-wrapper.

After the show, members of the opening act, Family of the Year (you’ll recognize their radio hit “Hero”), and Atlas Genius lead singer Keith Jeffery, stood by the merchandise tables to greet fans. I asked fans who were queuing what they thought about the set list, and they loved the way the set list played out, particularly the choice of the two encore songs. When I asked a few people how long they’d been fans, all those around me said “since Alt Nation.” There were a good number of people out last night who loved Atlas Genius from the time their only song was “Trojans” and eagerly awaited the coming of the full album, which they equally embraced.

Next for Atlas Genius is a tiring schedule that has them touring through December. Next for the fans is patiently waiting for the second album to drop.

San Francisco band The Dodos returned to Minneapolis tonight to anenthusiastic crowd at the Triple Rock. The duo was joined on stage by Joe Haege supporting on bass and vocals. The crowd was solidly couples with a dress code of stripes and plaid with bike helmets as an accessory. Ah, fall in Minneapolis. There you are.

The opening song "Confidence" got the crowd down on the main floor, followed by "Substance." The guys stuck to playing pretty much straight through with very little banter, which seemed to suit the Monday night crowd just fine. The crowd really came alive at "Red and Purple" toward the end the set. "The Ocean" followed and kept up momentum toward the biggest reaction of the night, "Good," which played just before encore. A one-song encore and the band is off now on an absolutely insane tour schedule: just a single day off here and there until October 17 when they get a break until to October 22, when they start back up again in Japan before landing in Europe by the end of the month. This is all in support of their latest album "Carrier," which is available in the usual electronic ways but also in vinyl and cassette.

Tired Pony played their only 2013 European gig last night (September 14) at the Barbican in London. Their latest effort, The Ghost of the Mountain, just released in the UK and will release here in the States on October 1. Their touring in North America also restricted to just one night, which will be in New York coming up on September 25. The show sold out quickly, no doubt thanks that the fans of the bands each member of Tired Pony hails from: Snow Patrol (Gary Lightbody), R.E.M. (Peter Buck), The Minus 5 (Scott McCaughey), The Windsor Player (Troy Stewart), and (Vu’s all-time favorite) Belle and Sebastian (Richard Colburn). Rounding out the supergroup are Iian Archer and Jacknife Lee. Their last album, The Place we Ran From, released in 2010 and judging by the equally limited touring the group did for that album, it could be safe to expect few (if any) shows after their New York gig, which is a benefit show at Housing Works Bookstore Café. This latest album has already surpassed the group’s first on the UK charts. Even though the New York show is sold out, fans can still preview the album thanks to the band’s website and the lyric videos popping up on YouTube from our friends across the pond.

The Australian band recently played the U.S. festival circuit (Lollapalooza, Outside Lands and Osheaga), and I can’t help but wonder whether the road is wearing on the boys.

Their upcoming visit will be their fourth stop in Minneapolis, just little over a year from their first. They’re still riding their radio hits “Trojans” and “If So” from their album “When it was Now,” with more material on its way. I have to own up to being slightly fascinated by Atlas Genius fans—the group (of mostly women) who gathered for the free show at a hotel in downtown Minneapolis last spring captured the early 20s demographic all the way to the soccer moms who had already been following (in some cases, quite literally) the band since their first appearance on a local news broadcast.

Some cities are selling out for their latest round about but tickets are still available for their September 26 return to the Varsity Theater. The last they were there, Atlas Genius was opening for Imagine Dragons; this time around they’re headlining with Dale Earnhardt Jr. taking the opener’s slot.

The Dangerous Summer is currently on tour, stopping by Minneapolis' 7th Street Entry last night, August 10th. W♥M's Jamie and Vu was at the show to check them out.

Kicking off this five-band showcase was The Word Party, which we misread as "World Party" (a band we like). The Word Party is a local Minneapolis band with two core members, Luke Henry and Nick Strot, who began writing music since they were 14 years old. Unfortunately, due to an early show (starting at 6pm, short/30 minute sets, road work, and detours, we had missed them).

BREAKING LACES

Instead, we caught Brooklyn's Breaking Laces as they set in their second song, "Mr. Curry is a Cop". Just by that song, we can tell these guys are pretty silly. Their set featured songs from their album Come Get Some, but we thought their best song is the finale, "God in Training".

RARE MONK

Next was Rare Monk, which we previously described as "an indie rock band from Portland, Oregon". This was their first time in Minneapolis, and they seem pretty excited and happy to be here. They did a few tracks from their Death By Proxy EP, including the last song, "Underground" and the title track (which was our favorite from their brief set).

TOMMY & THE HIGH PILOTS

The highlight of this showcase for us was Tommy & the High Pilots, which Jamie described as a flawless performance (which you can hear on the podcast if you stick around until the end). Most of their set consisted of their new album Only Human, with the two exceptions of "Round N' Round" from their 2009's Everynight and I think a Talking Heads cover song called "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)".

Highlight of the show for me was either the closer song "Outta My Head" or "Devil to Pay", which featured the fiddle player from Rare Monk.

The Dangerous Summer was the headliner. From what we can tell, they took their name from an Ernest Hemingway book (which was published after his death) and their music is best described as emo. They have a lot of fans, who knew all their lyrics, so you can tell right away that they write incredibly personal and relatable lyrics.

As you can see from the blurry photo of the setlist, they did plenty of songs from their latest album Golden Record, including "Catholic Girls", "Miles Apart", "Honesty", and "Knives". The album just came out last week (August 6, 2013) on Hopeless Records, which you can order direct or pick it up in person at a live show.

Jamaican Queens

It was a quiet night along First Avenue last night with the Main Room act, Tricky, postponing until October and the headliner for the Seventh Street Entry, Mac DeMarco, canceling. Entry veterans, Minneapolis-based band Aaron and the Sea saw to it that the show went on, though, playing first in a lineup that included Detroit act Jamaican Queens. Considering the eerily quiet streets we were a bit worried we'd find the room empty but there was a terrific showing for a Tuesday night, with a fun mix of fans in the crowd. Aaron and the Sea performed in virtual darkness with lights momentarily lighting the stage now and then, illuminating the smoke-filled stage. They were followed by Jamaican Queens, now touring with their album Wormfood that released this last March. Atlas Genius at Fine Line Music Cafe, Minneapolis (06/04/13)

I got a little preview of the Atlas Genius live act on Sunday (06/02 at the Aloft Hotel in Minneapolis), when the band held an acoustic set, which also meant that I got a preview of their audience. Both Sunday and last night (at the Fine Line Music Café), the rooms were full of adoring fans.

Lead signer Keith Jeffrey is as unexpectedly engaging as their hit "Trojans"; the number of fans is certain to grow. "I love you Keith!" was yelled not once, but twice before we were four songs in--it's only a matter of time before the professions of love from the audience turn to marriage proposals. When the band left Keith on stage by himself for "All These Girls" there were rows of ladies, singing along, who clearly wished the song had been written for them. Most songs had the crowd singing along, none quite as loudly, though, as the third song "If So" and the final, "Trojans," which the band delivered in a big way, adjusting it just enough for a live performance but keeping it close enough to the core to satisfy the audience.

The entire set was earnest and rang with a band destined to be mainstream; even filler songs from deep in the rotation grabbed the audience's attention. Opening for Atlas Genius was Haerts (who was just here in Minneapolis three weeks ago), who put on a powerful first set, followed by The Postelles (who we previously covered); both bands hail from New York.

Atlas Genius is currently on tour in support of their Warner Bros. Records' When It Was Now.

John Fullbright is a singer-songwriter from Oklahoma, who is currently on tour for last year's release of From the Ground Up (Blue Dirt Records).

As expected, the majority of the songs on his setlist is from the studio album, including "Jericho", "Satan and St. Paul", "All the Time In the World", "Fat Man", "Gawd Above", and "Moving".

I think to really appreciate John Fullbright's music; you have to experience it live. The young musician sings and plays songs that is seemingly beyond his age, and fans who turned up for the show would agree with me.

The two-song encore was an interesting choice. Instead of playing his original songs, he opted for two covers: Rufus Thomas' "Can Your Monkey Do the Dog" (1964) and Jimmy Webb's "If You See Me Getting Smaller I'm Leaving" (1977).

Telekinesis frontman Michael Benjamin Lerner likes Lucky Charms (but doesn’t eat them often), his favorite Telekinesis song to play for right now is "Empathetic People", and he thinks encores are awkward and strange. The question/answer session he opened with “do you have any questions for me?” three or four songs from the end of the set provided such information and was as entertaining and earnest as the rest of the Seattle-based band’s time on the Seventh Street Entry stage last night in Minneapolis.

Lerner was incredibly focused as he pounded his way through songs, pausing now and then to thank the audience for singing along (which they did, enthusiastically); to thank the Entry’s sound guy, Ron, for his work; and to implore the crowd to get home safely. Crowd favorites were "Dirty Thing", "I Cannot Love You", and the finale (remember, no encore) "Tokyo". Touring with opener and fellow Seattleites Deep Sea Divers, their next stops are Kansas City, Denver, and Salt Lake City in the coming week.
