Jack Ladder & the Dreamlanders is an Australian band that truly has something unique going for them. Their sound is unlike anything I've ever heard. At times their music seems like it's aiming to be dream pop but within minutes you are starting to wonder if you're at a synth-glam rock show. The whole set, in the back of your head, you're wondering if Jack Ladder is actually just Nick Cave in disguise.
Jack's voice is dark and deep but not depressing. It's a voice made for National Public Radio because it can easily lull you to sleep but because of the music behind it, it's nothing short of upbeat and energizing. The music is very dream pop/ synth rock/ glam rock? I honestly don't quite know how to describe it. It was a mish mash of genres that somehow, someway, all came together to form this strange, interesting and amazing sound.
Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders have released four albums since 2005 and, although they played a bit from each album, they seemed to focus on their newest release Playmates, released earlier this year on Fat Possum Records. I honestly couldn't really tell the difference between the albums which is a nice thing. I really enjoy it when a band has stayed so true to their style that you can barely notice the ten year time lapse between songs. It's truly amazing.
Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders have been touring extensively throughout the world. They most recently did an Australian tour with Florence & The Machine. Tuesday night's show was part of a nine show dash across the United States. They will soon return to Australia to be featured at a couple music festivals on their home turf. I truly hope they come back sooner than later.
Wastrels and Star Magnet opened the show. Both bands are from the Twin Cities and both bands have a lot of potential.
Wastrels is a post-punk/ psychedelic trio that used the crowd last night as "test subjects" for some new songs. The new music was the highlight of their set as it was much more upbeat than some of the older songs that they played and the members seemed to have a lot more fun playing it. You can find their new music on Spotify and iTunes.
